THE'' 'PITTSBURG- DISPATCH, MONDAY, DECEMBER 5;

A FAIR TRADE YOLUME

Holiday Specialties.
THE MARKETS GENERALLY FIRM.

Satueday, Dec Z.
Trade in wholesale mercantile lines dur
iug the past week was iair in "volume, not
iithstanding the movement on the part of
interior retailers in thfe wa'y of stockjn? up
for this year ceased sometime ago. Filling
up holes made in certain classes of goods
lias been the rule, but such operations have
been insufficiently extensive to give the
markets an appearance of decided activity.
Besides this class ot buying, which will
doubtless continue to a preater or less ex
tent until the turn of the year, sales of
holiday specialties have been and will be
large enough to keep the volume of
business running well ahead of that of
last year. In a general way the situation
has continued satisfactory. Haw and man
ufactured iron and steel have about held
their own, both in sales and prices; build
ing and building materials have been active;
ti-,e lendin? staples In i.roceries and bread
b' uffs have ruled firm aid somewhat higher.
TSie recent advance i 1 the price or cotton
1ms caused an appreciation of 5 to 10 per
cent lit manufactured coods. and the racto
lies have declined to take orders excepting
at value. They alsr claimed thev had no
unsold poods on hand, the November
trade having beer the largest on record.
Tim position of tl e domestic wool market
has been a very fi m one, with a speculative
feeling manifest in some quarters, while in
other holders tirve shown an inclination to
hold their wools above the market. Indeed,
some of the 1 intern houses that, bave not
been in the ma' et have been holding their
stocks M nho e the pneeeourrent. The po

Revoliition
In Eating
has been brought about by the
introduction of Cottolene, the
new vegetable shortening. The
discovery of this product, and the
demonstration of its remarkable
qualities, Has attracted the widest
interest. Hitherto the common
-shortening has been lard, or
indifferent butter. Every one has
probably suffered occasional dis
comfort from lard-cooked food ;
while it is well known that thous
ands are obliged to abstain entire
ly from everything of that kind.
To such people, Cottolene is of
peculiar value,-widening, as it
ddes, the range of what may be
eaten-and enjoyed. Cottolene
is a cooking marvel. It combines
with the food imparts to it a
tempting color, a, delicate flavor,
and an appetizing crispness.
No trace of greasiness remains
to offend the taste, or disturb the
digestion.
Cottolene is worthy pf the
careful notice of all those who
value good food, of itself 'or for
its hygienic properties.
