National Guardsmen Object to Giving the
Market Home to the School!.
The Pittsburg members of the National
Gntrd are considerably worked up over the
ordinance passed by Common Conncil on
.Monday leasing the Fifth avenue market
Lonse to the Central Board of Education
for high school purposes. The old market
house has beem used as an armory. The
military men contend that the city should
jiroride them with an armory.
At the meeting of Select Councils to
morrow an effort will be made to .have the
ordinance authorizing the sale of the prop
erty pasted instead of the ordinance passed

A Detective Comes to Grief.
Jerry Marra, of Kittanning, Pa., who

Order society of Pittsburg, was sent to the

An Old Homestead Employe Killed.
Patrick Huehes, 72 years old, of Swiss
vale, a man widely known and hiehly es
teemed in this part of Pennsylvania, was
killed by an express train on the Baltimore
and Ohio Bailroad yesterday afternoon be
tween Keating and City Farm station. The
old gentleman was formerly an employe of
the Homesteed Steel Works. Ke was on
his way home to Swissvale and stepped out
of the way of another train directly W
f-ont of the express.
Hloney Subscribed for Parks.
The new park scheme of Mayor Kennedy
is crowing. At a meeting of a number or
prominent citizens the Mayor explained
his plans, which met with approval, and
527,500 has already been subscribed.
Among those present were B. F. Jones,
James B. Scott, S. P. Harbison, John W.
Chaltant, John Walter and others.
Serlom Elevator Accident.
Joseph Longon.an employe of the Fahnes
tock Coal Company in the East End, was
probably fatally hurt yesterday by the ele
vator car in which he was riding suddenly
dropping from the third to the first floor.
