Xrw Tons. Nov. 23. The Congressional
s ub-committee investlsating the anthracite
coal combine examined -witnesses here to
day, with the usual result. President Oli
phant, or the Delaware and Hudson, de
clined to answer Questions as to prices, but
etid the letall coal business -wasapoorone
now. Another witness admitted that the
circular prices were fixed by the Tidewater
and Western meetings, but were not always
adhered to.
F. E. Sayward, editor of tno Coal Trade
Journal, when sworn as a witness, remarked
that he liorjed the cdmmittoe would ask him
some intelligent questions so he might be
able to give some intelligent answers, lie
had not heard any intelligent questions
asked yet, be said. "Now let her go," said
Mr. Sayward.
Congressman Wio caused Sayward to
somewhat moditv bis manner by requesting
him to conduct himsoir with some degree of
propriety. Witness said his paper contained
what purported to bo a correct list or prices.
In making up a statement of prices, he said,
it must be taken into consideration that the
price quoted is not always the price ob
tained. Witness was excused after being
five minutes on the witness stand.
