Grain Rules Higher and All the
Markets Are Somewhat Firmer!
FIGURES ON WESTERN PACKING.
Packers and Sealers Hake No Chances at
Their Weekly Meeting.
,HIGH PKICED TEGETABLES EXPECTED
Saturday, Xov. 26.
The principal features of the local whole
Bale trade situation this week were the ad
rances in grain, the decline in sugar, the
strength of coffee, dried fruits, ecss, butter
and cheee, and a generally firmer feeling
throughout all the markets. The week's
business was large, despite the holiday, and
operations were characterized by a feeling
of confidence and cheerfulness.
The greatest potato-producing tate in
the Union is KewTork,whichdeTotes(round
numbers being used in all cases) 370,000
acres, raises 30,000,000 bushels, or fully one
seventh or the entire crop of the country.
Iowa is second in amount raised 17,000,000
bushels though its area. 1S7.O0O acres, is
eclipsed by the 203,000 which Pennsslvanla
:i es to the raising on6,000,000 bushels. Illi
nois comes next both in area and quantity
of product, while Wisconsin and Kansas
cross each other for ilf th place. The four
Kew Encland States of Maine, New Hamp
shire, Vermont and Massachusetts, how
ever, lead the country in tho number of
bushels produced per acre, the average for
tile lour states ueing over iw uusucis aii
ncic, which is attained by no other States
except remote Washington, which nromises
to become one of the finest potato-grow ing
regions inxhc world.
Chickens will have the call now and
turkeys will take a back seat until Christ
mas week.

DROOPING PRICES
arark the Close of the "VTeekstTrading on
tho Chicago Board.
Chicago, III, Nov. 26. Drooping prices
marked the close of the week. To-nicht.
compared with last, wheat is ic lower
and corn about c, while provisions within
half an hour of the close dropped again
they had secured earlier.
There was a little firmness in wheat at the
Btart, due largely to brisk buying, but on
the advance the selling became liberal, and
there being little bullish news to support
the market, the price gradually fell off. The
leceipts in the Northwest were generous,
and Prime reported the condition of tho
winter wheat as satisfactory. Tho offerings
of December were unusually heavy, and did
mnch to cause the weaknesses the discount
on May was at one time neaily 7 cents.
Chan ging December to May was carried on
very extensively. The exports from both
coasts were again liberal, amountine to
3,463,000 bushels, againt 3.941,000 bushels the
previous week and 4,OS2,O00 bushels lor the
corresponding week last tear. Thb aail
able stocks in the United Slates and Canada
were reported at lOl.OOO.uOO. It was esti
mated that the visiule supply would show
an increase of about 1,000,000 to 1,500.000
bushels.
Initial trades in corn w era at about yes
terday s final figures, but it soon sold off Je
influenced some by the action of wheat.
At the decline the 'demand improved and
the car lots for Monday coming in light at
125 cars, prices reacted, recovering the early
break, changed but little, ruled easv and
closed about c lower.
In oats theie was a little changing from
December to January at 1c ana to,May at 5c.
Prices hadc range and the close was easy
at Jiic decline Horn yesterday.
Proilsions showed decided strength for a
time. A rise of 1 shilling in lard in the
Liverpool-market started prices up here for
that staple, and the entire market responded
to a local advance of 5c per 100 pounds in
hozs. During tne latter part of the session
prices declined on larger offerings and a re
duced demand. The estimated hog supply
lor the coming week favor only moderate
offerings, in marked contrast with the
enormous receipts lor the corresponding
week of 1891.
Freights wero slow with very little vessel
room offered. Rates were firm, 2o being
paid for corn to Buffalo.
