From Sproul & Co.'s market letter: "The
effort to defies the market through an
onslaught on Reading has not been very suc
ccsslul. The feature oi the morning was
the enroling of shorts on that stock, the
postponement of the New Jersey receiver
ship suits not being relished by the bears.
It 1- indeed alleged that all this litigation is
entering upon a new stage, and that the
New Jersey State authorities aie not nearly
so eager to Dress it as they were before elec
tion. The arternoon did not add much to
ihe activity, but it was marked by further
covering ot shot ts in Sugar and other stocks
due apparently to intimations Mat Mr.
Clevelnnd might make some lemarks at the
Chamber of Comnteice this evening tending
toieasure the business interests."
J. & Iiiche & Co. to Oakley & Co.: "Europe
combined to buv stocks to-day, and It is
estimated in the two days they have bought
about 20.000 shales of stock. The buying
abroad was stimulated bv several newspa
per articles, all o: which were of a very bull
ish tenor, their argument being mat the elec
tion ot Mr.Clevelaud would be a lastinggood
to this omntry."

GRAIN DECLINES
In Spite of a Heavy Export Business and

Chicago, Nov. 13. Big export business
proved powerless to-day to check the de

Slay. Corn declined IJic, and oats c Pro

nnd the fine weather, wheat was farther In
fluenced by the large increase In the amount
on passage 1,2:8,000 bushels and the In.
crease of nearly T00.C0J bushels in the En
glish visible. In the absence of any fresh
bull news the trade seemed to forget the
bullish reports on which the market has so
recentlv advanced and began to doubt the
permauency of the improvement. Hence,
on the appearance of the weakness there
was pretty free liquidation and good short
gelling. December wheat heavily offered by
such elevator Interests as Armour & Co. and
Counselman.Toroved a drag on the market
and carried prices to a discount of 6&c bo
low May. There was a leport oi 250,000
bushels of wheat being taken in St. Louis
export, also that Duluth had sold at least
200.000 bushels, and it was also claimed that
200,100 bushels had been sold here for export,
but even these rpports failed to have any
special effect upon values or create any ad
vnnce in prices.
Corn was weak and lower rrom the start,
on the more liberal receipts than expecteil,
the fine weather for Interior deliveries and
the weakness in the wheat pit.
In oats there was a liberal traae and a
weaker ana lower markot due to to decline
in wheat and corn and the unloading of
longs.
Hcg products were unsettled and higher.
The receiDts of hogs were less than expected
and prices at the yards were 610c lower.

Airbrake Ihe Only Stock to Show
Anything Like Strength.
THE GAS SHARES ARE 10WER
And Kesri j. All the Street Railways Hbott
a Drooping Tendency.
LOCAL AND GENERAL FINANCIAL NEWS
Ttjesdat, Nov. 15.
Dullness and weakness were again the
chief characteristics of the local stock
market to-day. The trading at the regular
call covered only P. & B. traction, Phila
delphia Company and P., A. & JL traction,
and the transactions aggregated only 65
shares. Philadelphia Company continued
its drooping tendency, selling down to 21
and closing at 2121Jf. The weakness,
after a prolonged spell of steadiness, can
only be attributed to sales for all accounts
on unfavorable reports concerning the sup
ply of cat It is common talk in some
quarters that the Pinhook field, the bring
ing in oi which did much to put the stock
above 20. is gradually petering
out. The Philadelphia Company brought
in some good wells in that rezion and se
cured control of what seemed to be the
cream of all the territorv on the Pinhook
anticlinal, and if the supply found there is
Deiug exnautiea rapidly as some assen
the Philadelphia Company will be the chior
sufferer. The Philadelphia Company peo
ple seen resarding the matter do not admit
that the field is taillntr materially: they sim
ply assert that experience has taught every
body that all fields mil sooner or later. They
declare mlldlv.jotnono the less confidently,
that their sup'ply has shown no direinntioii,
and that they expect to have sufUclent gas
lor their household consumers this winter,
and, for all ttiey now know, lor many
winters to come. On the contrary, men ex
perienced in the business and who have
been directly nnd 'indirectly interested'in
the Pinhook Held ever since the first big
well was brought in there, say that It has
seen Its best days and will soon be added to
the list of "has beens." "The field Is declin
ing with astonishing rapidity," said a gen
tleman to The Dispatch. "It has been
prodded to death. If only a few wells had
been put down there it miiiht have had a
pretty fair lease ot lite; but the trouble has
been thatit has been ovenun with com
panies and individuals who have killed
it by overdevelopment." It is to be
hoped that the gentleman has ex
aggerated a little, but if he has, so also
have a number of otheis. It may be,
as intimated, that such talk is partially or
wholly responsible for the weakness of Phil
adelphia Company stock, but if there is no
basis lor it the company suouia nasicn io
make It known. Indeed, the company owes
it to its stockholders and its patrons to
make known its condition as to the supply
of gas. At the last annual meeting of the
company a resolution was adopted instruct
ing the Board ot Directors to issue a circular,
some time befoio cold weather set in.settlng
forth the facts as to the gas supply, so that
the patrons oi the company would know
what preparations, Uany, they would have
to make lor the winter; but so far as known
no such circular has yet been Issued. If the
directors have any Intention of obeying the
Instructions embodied in that resolution, it
would seem as if now was the time for
action.
What is keeping the street railway shares
so weak no one appears to know. That they
will be nieher, however, everybody freely
admits. Theieisa big upward movement
coming before long, and -judging from the
bear talk one bears in certain quarters, its
commencement is probably close at band. P.
& B. traction sold at 24 to-day, closing with
the extremes a fraction below and above
this point; P., A. & M. traction sold at 44,
with more offered at the bame price, and the
others weie weaker without being notice
ably lower.
Union Switch and Signal closed off in the
bidding, on both the common and the pre
ferred, and nothing on the list was really
strong excepting Airbrake, which was
wanted on 'change at 135 and cold on the
street at 136.

Valley railway, 7-30S, 110 bid; Junction

but It Is said they contemplate the control
or a numDerof banking houses by a syndi
cate, which control ts to enable the syndi
cate to borrow monoy witr, whioh to buy in
dustries. It is the opinion of some close observers
of the markot for whisky stock that there
has already been such an immense line or
loans seenred on the stock by the manipu
lators, and that they will nped to borrow so
much more that they are forced to keep
quotations up where they are.
The borrowing of tho period has become
so strong and steady that notes of interest
maintain themselves at 6 per cent for the
majority of loans and 7 per cent on a fair
proportion of time paper. When inter
viewed in regard to the sources of the de-,
maud, bankers assert that nearly every
branoh of business is represented at the
counters. The packors are using less monev
than they ordinarily require in November,

CREAMERY UNCHANGED.
The Elgin Butter Board Does Business ot
Last Week' Prices Dried Fraltj in
Sharp Demand Seeds Higher and Oats,
Hay and Wheat Firmer Revised Prices.
Tuesday, Nov. 15.
No change in prices was made at the
session of the Elgin butter board yesterday,
and consequently there will be no alteration
in quotations current here this week. The
market is quoted very strong, however, and
commission men are confident that the top
has not yet been reached. Supplies are
light, and owing to tbe successful war
against oleomargarine, legitimate goods
have a monopolv, with the demand running
mainly to creamery.
Coffee is quoted strong at Monday's ad
vance, and sugar is a trifle weaker at the
late decline.
The demand for dried and evaporated
fruits is steadily increasing and prices are
tending upward. A big trade is expected
until alter the holiday season.
Oats and hay continue to show strength,
wheat is a little firmer ana corn, flour and
feed are unchanged. The demand for the
grade of flour used by bakers has materially
increased oflate.
Clover and timothy seed are higher under
nu improved demand and in sympathy w 1th
higher markets in the West.
Demand continues good for prime stock oi
most all varieties of potatoes, but wheie n
preteience is shown it usually falls to white
descriptions. Recoipts have been liberal
for some time, and supplies on hand now ai o
fair, but at same time tuero is no disposition
on the part oi the market to weaken, prices
ruling Hi in as quoted.
As tho weather grows cooler and conse
quently favorable to goods In the dressed
poultry line, more interest is naturally
manifested. During; the warm weather con
sumers are mainly supplied by local dress
ers, uut in a snort time retail dealers will he
looking for their supplies from the produce
houies, and when the demand rightly sets
lu liberal shipments should be made to this
market.
