THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 189a
FULLEST and BEST RETURNS from DISPATCH ADLETS
IN & FOSSIL FOREST.
Mr. Schermerhorn Again Makes a Great
Geoloelcal Discovery.
Washisgtoh, Nov. 9. F. B. Schermerhorn,
geologist of the World's Fair bureau, who
recently discovered the great glaciers in
Idaho county, has found a fossil forest In
the center of Custer county.
In the ame locality he has discovered the
petrified bones of a now extinct race of men
and animals, which will he sent to Chicago.
Hie forest covers an aera of four square
miles, aud the condition of the ground
shows that at one time an enormous flow of
clay, which worked In from the northwest,
has buried the tree trunks to a great depth.
Tills clay has turned to stone, and no one
can be certain of its true depth' without
coi'i" to great expense. All the trees in this
lorcst have their tops broken off and stand
from 10 to 40 feet above the ground, averag
ing about 2S to the acre.
Schermerhorn took the exact measure
ment of all the trees and found them to
average 12 feet in diameter on top and 18 feet
in diameter at the surraco of the ground.
How far the trunk reached through the
clay ana stone to the soil he had no means
or ascertaining. A branch which had be
come detached from a tree, and was lying
about 16 feet from it, was three feet in di
ameter. . . .
From the size or the trees and their
branches Mr. Schermerhorn thinks they are
a species of redwood such as is found in
Citlilornla, and he attributes their fosslliza
tion to the clay, which, bearing a large part
of mineral, and piesumaoly coming from
some volcano, soon turned the living trees
into monuments of stone.
