KO KOTEYTORTIIY CB1XGES IN STAPLES
Satukdat, "Sot. 5.
Bank exchanges this week were fl4,872,
940 16, against 516,426.616 82 last week,
and accepting them as indicating the volume
of business passing they show quite a fall
ing off in trade this week, which was
canted, no doubt, by the great interest in
the approaching election. General trade
influences, however, were reported in good
shape, more particularly the iron and steel
trade, and it appears to be certain that
movements in mercantile and manufactur
ing lines will be quite liberal after the
election is over. Staples changed in price
but little during the week, and in a general
way tbe markets were featureless.
Hogs and Hog racking.
The Cincinnati Price Current reviews the
lituation as follows: At the present time
the prevalent tnlk suggests a scircity of
bogs compared with last year, and quite
likely this will prove to be the case for
tome weeks in the early part of the season
flow opening. Prices of hogs have been so
much advanced as to yield a good profit in
feeding corn. This lias led the farmer re
cently to not only retain Ills young stock,
bat in a lar;o way to also become a buyer
tor feedlrur. while at tbe fame time he is
holding hack breeding animals under the
encouraging; outlook. Thee conditions so
toward making an appearance or a m enter
carcltv of stock under the lessened offer
ngs than Is actually the case in a proper
omparlson ot the position. It Is not, there
ore, tn order to accept with great conflden ce
be probability of current values being
ust&ined, or Hint the winter supply or hosts
s likely to fall essentially short of last ear.
And it should be uoine in mind that the
situation encourages an effort for enlarging
the future supply of boss, so that If thero
be no unusual interfering conditions the
coming spring may be expected to develop
a liberal production of pfcrs.w hlch, although
not marketable until late in the summer
season or subsequently, will nevertheless
form a basis for sentiment affecting trading
operations. Under thee possibilities, and
other conditions surrounding the packing
Interest at tnis time, thero is much to en
courage a halting course, or an inclination
to freely offer product for future delivery
Ejalnst'current tnanulacture.

hogs packed from Starch 1 to date at the

DULL BUT HIGHER.
Cereals and Hog Products Close on Ad
vances, Tliose in Grain Ueins Slight and
in Provisions Quite Material The Gen
eral Tone Strong.
Chicago, Nov. 5. A sacrifice to politics
was largely the fate or tho markets to-day.
Notwithstanding the dullness, however, the
general tone was one of strength. Com
pared with last night, wheat this evening is
lie higher, corn, jc, and oats, c. The rise
iu the price ot provisions continues.
With easier cnbles, and assurances that
the growing wheat in the dry areas In the
Southwest nad been greatly benefited by
tho recent rains, the first impulse was to sell
the market oflf But wnen it was considered
that the day's receipts wcro nearly JW cars
less than estimated; that the deliveries nt
primary points for tne week were again
small as compared with the previous weeks,
and that tbe exports Irom both coasts wero
still ueneron, or 3,715.030 bushels in wheat
and flnur, against 3,120,000 bushels for the
corresponding week last year, the market
took on n decidedly firmer tone. The indi
cations are for an Increase of 2,500,000 bush
els In tho visible and BradtticcC reports the
available supply in the country and Canada
at 87.300 000 bushels the largest on record
and 21,000,000 bushels more than a year ago
and nearly 42,000,000 bushels more than two
j ears ago. In view or this enormous stock,
the friends of wheat wore not dlSDOsed to be
aggressive and hence trade was slow and the
gain in prices not important.
Corn was quiet bnt firm; local receipts
were only 2S3 caTS, where 3V cais had been
expected; but the clear, cold weather was
looked upon as a favorable indication for an
increase in arrivals, and lor a time there
was an easy feeling. But ilio buying soon
increased, and the offerings being limited
there was an Improvement.
Oats weie firmer on the small local re
ceipts only 1S9 cars, whero 190 were ex
pectedand in sympathy with the better
tone tn corn.
Ilogproductswerefirmer.mnlnlyon lighter
receipts oi hogs than expected. It was also
alleged that products w ere too low to show
any prrflt on mannfacture from present
prices of live animals. Compared with yes
terday's closing prices January pork is '15s
higher and January lard'Jc higher, but fur
November tho at ticlo is 2iJe higher. Jauu

New York, Nov. 5. The drygoods market

Printed labi tcs wcro in good request, though
actual transactions were chiefly in wldo

People Don't Grow Famous in a
Hurry.
Carlsbad did not become known in
a day. It took centuries to acquire
its present fame. It is known all over
the globe, and retains its reputation
solely on its merits. For all diseases
of the stomach, liver and kidneys, as
well as in constipation, rheumatic af
fections and diabetes, use Carlsbad
Sprudel Water or the Sprudel Salt if
you cannot conveniently use the
Water. Be sure to obtain the genu
ine, which must have the signature of
"Eisner & Mendelson Co., Sole
Agents, New York," on the neck of
every bottle. . M
