rfe'-jntrKsiAft DULLNESS IN STOCKS Attributed to tbe Near Approach of the P residental Election. A NUMBER OF SHARES RAIDED "With 11 ore or less J-nccess and Others Score Higher Harks. OHIO SOUTHERN PRESENTS THE FEATURE v Xew York, Not. 2. Speculation at the Stock Exchange was less active than for some time past, and the dullness is attrib uted to the ncarapproach of the Presidental election which occupies the atten tion of the street to the exclu sion of everything else. The dullness was taken advantage ot to raid the different shares, which, however, yielded to per cent outside of New England, Lake Shore, American Sucar and Northern preferred, the decline being about a point in each case. Final sales were at a recovery of to . A lew stocks moved inde pendently of the fluctuations just noted, scoring higher quotations and holding the advance well to the end. Illinois Central rose 2K to 10S. New Yoi k Central moved up fiom 111 to 11 but reacted tn 11!. There was a livelv demand lor New York, Susque hanna and'Wosterns, tbecommira and pre lerred both advancing a point. The widest changes of the dav wero In Ohio Southern, which advanced 4X per cent to on rumors that the company h.is obtained the neces sary capital to extend Us system. The in dustrial croup was quiet and quotations closed about the same as yesterday. The market closed steady in tone. Railnay bonds were Arm, tbesale amount ing to $1,221.WW. The Heading issues wore weaker. Detroit and Bay City and Alpena Ists declined 3 to CO and Houston and Texas debenture 4s rose 2 to S0. In the moraine Illinois Central and New Yoik Central were advanced by tho traders the former on areport that the decision soon to be rendered by the United States Su preme Court would cede the right to them of tbe property along the lake tront at Chi cago. If they win the suit it will be a tre mendous thing for the Central, but they have lost It once befoieln another court, and it is probable that the decision will bo adverse to them again. Whisky moved in narrow limits, and the Coalers report frac tional losses, though there were rumors ot a cut In coal rates. We think that in view of the present manipulated state of the mar kets It Is best to take profits and await de velonments before purchasing. J. S. Bacbe & Co. to Oakley & Co. Xllaoo, Nor. 2. strong rally, after an "interval of depression, was the feature of to-day's markets. The strength extended into all the pits, lifting both cereals and provisions. Price changes fiom last night, however, are not remarkable. In wheat at the start there was free liquidation which was Increased by rains thioughout the winter wheat district. December was the weakest and fell to 6 cents discount on iirnr against 5c difference yesterday. Counsel man was out with a statement that all reports connecting his house with a squeeze of that month are utterly without foundation, ' and that he really feels very liearlt.li on the market. This was followed by weak cables, which increased the depression and the sell ing was for a time urgent nnd vicious. May sold at the lowest of the crop. Iviter, how ever, operators began to feel that perhaps they had not acted wlselv In selling so freely and began to take back the property. At the same time the estimates for to-morrow came in unusually light, and this was quickly followed by Brad tireett report of the available supply showing a much smaller increase than expected. Under the influence of this ne s the market developed consider able firmness and prices reacted. BeDorts from the Northwest are generally agreed abont a heavy decrease In larmers' deliver ies, but country elevators and sidetracks ore so crowded that the effect of that on Minneapolis and Duluth receipts is not ex-, pected to show for some time yet. Corn was weak during the first hour and sold off sharplv. Influenced largely by the downward tendency in wheat, for all other conditions were favorable. Tlie receipts were nearly 100 oars less than estimated and rain was reported everywhere in the corn belt, but the slump in wneat carried corn with It. Later when heat began to react corn quickly followed, and was further strengthened by the small estimate for to morrowonly 2S5 cars. Oats were steady most of the day. The receipts were only 173 cars, where 240 had been expected, and the estimate for to-mor-tnorrow ns for only ISO cars. The close wan at JK above yesterday's flguros. TRADING FALLING OFF, 1 But the Market Presents a Generally Steady to Strong Front. AIRBRAKE MOVES DP AGAIN And Duqnesne Traction Continues Its Re covering Movement. FEW OTHER CONSPICUOUS FEATURES . Wednesday, Nov. 2. The volume or business in local securities to-day showed a further tapering off from that completed Monday, and indications pointed to the conclusion that moderate trading is all that can be looked for until alter the election. Such a condition, how ever, is without the natural accompaniment of a weakening tendency superinduced by a disposition to let go of stocks for a while. Iudeed, the market is generally stroug, all tilings considered, and the position of a majority of the' active shares is such that advances are more likely to be es tablished in the near future than declines. The features to-day were a further recovery in Duqnesne traction, the strength of Airbrake, a slisht weaken ening in P., A. & M., sales S( Pittsburg traction at 59 and the failure or Philadelphia Company to retain all tho re covery of the previous day. On the street there was evidence that con siderable business in street railway bonds was passing, and some of tho brokers were busy picking up small lots of Pleasant Val ley so that holders could even up in order to trade their holdings properly for Man chester stock. The work of attending to transfers and other necessary details is generously left to the brokers, but as a rule it Is a "thank you" Job and they are not par ticularly anxious lor it. It takes time, and timo is money, especially with the brokers. Movements on 'Change. Westinghouse Electric second preferred sold at 39 at the first board and closed offered at 39. Pittsburg traction srold at 59, and the closing quotations were 559. Xn odd lot of Union Switch and Signal pre ferred sold at 53, the stock closing at 37K 39. Pleasant Valley sold at 25, closing at 25K asked. P., A. & M. traction sold at4t4 4o on call, the outside price for two shares, but after the close the stock sold at 44, and tho closing bid was 43. Central traction sold at i0. closing at 29 bid; a small lot of Airbrake sold at 132, and after the close Electric scrip sold at 94, with the same price bid for more. People's Pipeoge was fractionally firmer, but Philadelphia Company, under a littlo offering, lost a fi action of the gain of the east few days. Underground Cable and nited States Glass continued to show strength. Ii Norii was higher and Luster easier, and others were unchanged. Unlisted street railway socurltlcs closed as follows: Duquesne traction, 27 bid: do. 5s, 100 asked ex-interest; P. & B. 11 action, 23 24J: do 5-. 100 asked ex-Interest; P. A. & iL traction, 43 bid; do. 5s. 103 asked. Kxcbange Dii ersions. Politics run neck aud neck with business on 'Cnange, If, indeed, nfore interest was not manifested in the former than the lat ter. Harrison money was abunaant, but the supporters of Mr. Cleveland had either already "put up" to the extent of their ability, or else they felt less sanguine of the success of their tavorlte than they did a few days ago, for none of the Harrison money was covered. The black eye received by Central traction in Councils in the matter of the Bellelield street railway ordinance has evidently em bittered the irieuds of Central against the Duquesne people. The latter were charged with violation of agreements and promises, and wagers were offered that their road had not made a dollar since it commenced operations: that it would not nay a divi dend as soon as some people expeoied, and that it was "no good" on general principles anyhow. Friends of Duquesne offered to take somo of the wagers, provided those who offered them would prove their ability to decide them satisiactorilv. It was also intimated that Central wnnld "have the law on" Councils and the Belleficld street railway projectors. The Election nnd the Trusts. The effects of the election upon the so called trust stocks seeui to be a favorite topic of discussion just now in tho various bankers and brokers' offices. In some way an impression seems to have gaine1 ground that Mr. Cleveland's election means a vigor ous warfare against trusts. With a view of obtaining the opinion 01 the people most deeply Interested on the subject, says tho iralJ Street News, several or them have been interviewed, and in substunce they say: Tho Sherman anti-trust law is obligatory In Its provisions. Attorney General Mil ler carefully investigated several of the combinations, and the result was that suits were brought In Boston against Distill ing and Cattle Feeding and in I'll iladelplila against the American Sugar Refining Com pany. Equally caiciul investigation was made in the case 0: Cordage, and the Treas ury agents reported that .there was no ground for snlt and Attorney General Miller broueht no suit, becauso the Cord :go com pany was not a monopoly, but was pursuing legitimate business. In tho Whisky Trust suits tho indictments weie detective and nnd to bo amended. In the Sujf.-ir case hear ings are going on before a Master, the Sugar pcoDlo being absolutely confi dent that their position is unassail able. What Mr. Cleveland's Attorney General will do in caso Mr. Cleveland is elected, no one can say. Mr. Harrison's Attorney General has brought snits against certain of the ex-trusts; tiiat is, companies that wero originally lormed a trusts, but wero reorganized as regular corporations, many ot them under the Ian s or New Jersoy. Under either administration tho ex-trust ptople are uerfectly satisflod that theli po sition is impregnable, except perhaps where an absolute monopoly exists, and such a u.iso among listeu industrials will be extremely hard to find. The managers of the so-called industrial stocks ate confident that the elec tion will have no ellect whatever upon spec ulation In this group of stocks, and profess absolute indifference, as to the results. GOOD TRADE REPORTS Continue to Come From AH Points Money Plentiful and Collections Easy Fanners Still Bushing to Market With Their Wheat, Oats and Corn. "Wednesday, Nov. 2. For some time past trade in all depart ments has been quite active and general business reports continue highly encourag ing. Honey is plentiful and likely to grow easy from now forward and collections are satisfactory. The most striking feature of the movement is the extraordinary rush of the farmers to market their grain. All the railroads are crowded with orders to move wheat and corn, and blockades are reported eyervwheie. Stocks of wheat In sight are unpieccdentedly large for the time or year, and they have been Increasing nt the rate of upward 01 4,000,000 bushels a uoek. At New York the stocks have risen to 14,000,000 bush els and the elevators theie and elsewhere are ciowded to overflowing. Adayorrwo ago it was stated that lrom 4,000 to 6,000 cars of grain were on the tracks in Chicago wait ing to be switched or unloaded; 130caison outside tracks were not Inspected owlug to their distance from the city. Under these circumstances lb is only natural that prices tor grain should rulo lower. Wheat is phenomenally cheap, the price having fallen to tne lowest figure so fur reached on this crop. No. 2 cash lots of spring wheat have sold at 69c per bu during the last week, which is 23u lower than it touchod at any time in October, 169L It seems as if tho farmers should get a better price lor their wheat, us India and Russia, havo short crops, and EuroDean importing countries are certain to be good buyers o; our surplus breadstuns. and there are rea sons fur believing that after the mad rush to sell is abated there will be a rise in values. Com is being marketed with great lreedom, and is very weak. Corn-husking is pioceed ing rapidly, and the new crop will be mar eted at an early date if the weather con tinues as favorable as it has been of late. Advices from different parts of the West state that farmers are still plowing and that the winter wheat in the giound Is making good piogress. Hogs are arriving mora freely, and cattle and sheep are being mar keted actively. Grain, Flour and Feed.
