1 FLURRY IN MONEY. Call Loans Bushed Up to 9 Per Cent Without Effect on Stocks. HIGHER EARLY AND LOWER LATE Industrials ictive and Fome of Them Materially Higher. WHI8KI AKD GAS LEAD THE LIST New Tonic, Nov. 1. The stock market was much less active to-day. The fluctua tions were also less important tbau usual of late, the net changes for the day in a ma jority of instances being only 4 per cent either way. Generally speaking, the market was higher in the early trading and lower during the afternoon, with, however, a partial recovery at the close. Distilling and Cattle Feeding led the list in point of activity. Gas sold up to 95, the highest point ever attained; American Cotton Oil and Lead ruled firm at an advance of 1 per cent. Among 'the railroads the grangers and trunk line shares were in brisk request early in the day, but afterwards lost the improvement. New York Central was a marked exception, rising X to lllj-s, and closing at the top notch. Heading and Northern Pacific preferred were feverish, and New York and New England weak. The flurry in money which carried the rate for call loans up to 9 per cent was used against the market, but with comparatively little effect The market closed quiet and generally weak. Kail road bonds were dull. The transac tions were only $778,000. St Paul flrst I. & M. division, ine 2 to 124J. Union Pacific Ks declined IK to 67. Whisky opened with a bulge, but still long stock seemed to come in from some source or another and the stock felt it all Cay. The advance lately lias been very sharp and we think the stock high enough for the present. In Chicago Gas the buying was the same as heretofore, but at 95 nnd above there was also considerable Ions stock for sale. Mifrar Mas taken in hand, bnt they wero not able to doanythlngereat, though the traders took a hand in raising it Slonev was nctive and loaned up to 9 per cent, but ne do not look for any higher monev, as the drain West has diminished considerably. Some money will have to go South to move the cotton crop, but not enouch to interfere to any creat extent. Wo think that in view of the coming elections and the uncer tainty thereor it is well to be very conserva tive, especially as the people ho are work ing this inaiket are carrying a big load. J. S. Baclie & Co. to Oakley & Co. lioney was a little firmer in ton on the prospect of higher rates abroad. Distillers and Chicago Gas were tlio principal icatures of what trading there was, and as both eased oil in price as soon us nctive manipulation was withdrawn, they furnish something of an index to the listless and waiting market which is now encountered. THE PITTSBURGT- SOME GOOD ADVANCES. Airbrake and Phillio Move Up and Duqnesne Starts to Recover, SWITCH AND SIGNAL BUOYANT. Pittsburg and Birmingham Traction the Only Point of Ileal Weakness. LOCAL AND GENERAL FINANCIAL NEWS Tuesday, Nov. 1. The ceneral tone of the market for local securities exhibited a 'slight improvement to-day. There were not so many weak spots in the market and farther additions were made to the value of those shares which have recently re-acted from a more or less extended downward movement. Of these shares Airbrake was conspicuous with an 'advance lo 129 'bid and Philadelphia Company with a gain of a half point at 22 bid. Duquesne traction was in demand from good sources, under the- influence of which it recovered practically from the low point of the previons day and closed strong, thus stamp ing as correct tlie opinion expressed in these columns, that it had touched bottom Monday. The selling fever with respect to this stock appears to have entirely abated, and a gradual and extended upward turn would not surprise anyone closely connected with the street It is not probable, however, that the movement in it will amount to much until after tho election. The char acter of the demand for Philadelphia Com pany was excellent, and if indications were not misleading the stock absorhed yes terday and to-day dropped into hands not likely to let go of it before a snbstnntinl advance has been established. Some of the pur chases were undoubtedly lor eastern ac count, but experience has demonstiated that the eastern traders aio not slow to take reasonable profits when in sight, and a mod erate rise will likely throw such purchases on the market again. One of the featuics of the day was the purchase by Hill & Co. irora Morris & Browning of a block of 3"-0 sharos of the stock at 2 Union Switch and Signal was strong.parilcularl v the preferred, a small lot or which was picked up ut S3 by II. M. Lonsr. Central traction did not hold up to the prevlqus close, presumably because tho. Mayor's veto of tho Bellefloid street railway oidlnnnce was not sustained by Councils. Independent of this factor, how evci, the best opinion seems to be that the stock is worth more than current quota tions. The only 1 call v weak spot in tho list was Plttsbiiror A Birmingham traction. which sold at 23i4 ancVclosed at the latter price bid. " The other features of tho day on 'cluuure were sales of Pleasant Valley railway at 25 and the sale of a round lot of Allegheny Val ley railway preferred at 12, Hill & Ca selling to James carothei s. Electric unassented was qnoted at 2324, the second prefeired.it 50 asked and the first preierred at S8K59. Other shares were about unchanged. The unlisted street railway shares closed ab follows: Duquesne traction, 27 bid: P. & B. traction, 2324; P., A. & M. traction, 4444. Money in the East. ' New Toek, Nov. L Tho Evening Post says: The recent sharp advance in money hub largely sentimental, and was not perma nently Justified by oithor piesent or pios pective conditions. If there had been any real "tightness" of money it would, of course, have expressed itself before nnd dunng the November interest payments. On the contrary, this week's money market has be.cn extremely quiet, with a steady tendency to lower rates. To-day's business in time money, was actually done at reduced flgures and this in spite of tho fact that cur rency shipments southward are still draw ing on New York funds. The fitct is general business in and out or the stock market is little enough changed from what it was in the spring and summor, and it is the condi tion of business which, after all, governs tho rate of money. Allegheny Citizens Want tho Watson Prop erty Purchased by the City and Con verted Into a Park Current tiosslp, Sales, Etc Tuesday, Nov. L Allegheny Citj will in all probability havo another park before a great while. Many of the most prominent citizens of that city are taking a very great interest in the movement, and the officials are also as deeply interested in the enterprise. Mr. D. K. Park, at the suggestion of the citizens whose names appear below, has secured an option on the Watson property, a tract men tioned in this column some time ago as being a very desirablo one for park puiposos. It lies on the western side of Perrysvllie ave nue and contains 187 net es. The option is at $780 an acre, which is considered to be about one-half of the real value of the property. Some realty adjoining it, of a similar natnre, which has no Iroumge on the avenue, wns recently sold at $1,250 nu acre cash, and tho Watson land is contidered worth at least $500 an acre more. The inducement offered to the owner for placing the price at $780 an acre Is that it is to be used forparkpurposes, and that tho oonverslon of the tract into a park will enhance tho value of the property on the opposite side of the avennc, which is also owned by the same gontleman. The peoplo interested piopose to have tho city take tho property, ir possible, and they promie to contribute handsomely toward the improvement of the ground by private suDscriptlon.
