GOSSIP ADOUT SPORTING MATTERS
A sporting event of unusual interest will
take place this afternoon at Exposition
Park at 4:30 o'clock. Peter Priddy, of this
city, will run Joseph Courtney, of Ports
mouth, England, lor the two-mile cham
pionship of Americi, a stake of 5500 aside
and the gate receipts. Peter Priddy is
well-known in local sporting circles and
was never defeated in a match race except
by Harry Darrin, of Sheffield, England.
Darrin was brought to this country by 3Ir.
Jim Kennedy, "the sporting editor of the
Xew York Times. Priddy has several well
earned victories to his credit, having de
feated such able men as Joseph Jordan, E.
CI McClelland and Michael Kennedy, of
Chicago, who at that time was champion of
the world.
Courtney holds the record as the cham
pion mile "runner of England and has been
brought to Pituburg by Mr. Jim Kennedy.
He is 5 ieet 10 inches tall, weighs 140
pounds and is built very much on the lines
of Fitzsimmons, the pugilist. Mr. Kennedy
thinks him a wonderful runner; in fact,
proclaims him to be the best man in bis
class. Courtnev won the championship of
Great Britain last July by defeating Cam
eron Bell, of Edinburgh, Scotland, who up
to that time never had been beaten before
in a one-mile run.
Courtney has twice been beaten by Mc
Clelland, who was defeated by Priddy. On
that, account the sporting element in this
citv "is incline 1 to Javor Priddy.
Priddy was seen yesterday at 4 o'clock
along with Sam Cay and was in first-class
condition. Mr. Day is, well known as
never having bandied a losing man and is
confident ot victory again this time. The
betting last night was very lively, the odds
being 5 and 6 to 4 on Priddy.
