THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 26, 1892. INDUSTRIALS HIGHER. Distilling and Cattle Feeding Touches Another High Point. JHE BAILKOAD LIST IMPROVES And the General Market Closes With a Etrong Tone freYalent. KEW ENGLAND ONE OP THE FEATURES Sew York, Oct 25. The day opened on tlie Stock Exchange with a buoyant feeling, owing partly to a heavy purchasing move ment in Xew England, -which carried that stock up to 40 from 48 at the close yester day. Subsequently the price ran ofi to 4GJ. The general railroad list improved M to yt per cent, but subsequently reacted and left ofl practically unchanged from last nisht's figures. Eeaaing, after celling ofT a fraction to 57, advanced on animated dealings to 5S. A reaction to 5B58J occurred later. . Among the Industrials, Distilling and Cattle Feed in;: was the special attraction, ranging from." GjJS to CSJe and closing at the latter, the highest price ever reached. American Migar, Cotton OH and other Industilale ndvjuccd anywhere Jiom to2J percent ai.d the only important reactions at the close were in General Elcctiic, Susarand National Staich. winch leceded llfrnm the hlgh ct. Tho maiket closed steady in tone. Tho Ev iung i'ust says: To-day's stock: mar Vet 'prices changed little chiefly bccinsc buying orders and selllnir orders at the mar Vet so generally matched each other. The few initial advances in St. Paul, in Chicago Gas and conspicuously In Ne England v ere made suddenly, and seemingly with a view to market for ules. In most oftheso ttocka yesterday's bull manipulators were sellers. This frightoncd out the rank and file, and was followed by a few hours of dull ness. New England declined steadily, with occasional spasmodic rallies, each or which was gieeted by tresh liquidation. The gen eral list proving immovable, tho spectacle waspie-ented of an advance.in the Indus trial stocks. Distilling certificates, last be coming the room traders' favorite. led this movement. Elsewlieie fluctuations were small, and the whole market bore its usual impress or professional manipulation. We have bad a continuation or the bull movement to-day, although fluctuations have again been confined largely to tho In dustrials, Chicago Gas. A. C. O., Lead, Sugar and D. C. & F. scored rair advances and showed a bold rront in spite of considerable liquidation. The commission houses were conspicuously the bui ers of the market and we are inclined to think that theie was some liquidation done by traders and tho Keene crowd. In spite of this, however, there are no -igns of w eakenlng in the general list and offeiings seem to be ab'-orbed rapidly. Even the Gould stocks have now joined lu the general advance, and it the Gould forces have joined issue with the Keeno crowd, the market will probably continue to advance until the bull lecling has been worked up to such a degree as to permit of more than partial liquida tion. .It must not be lorgotten, however, that we have not had a steady advance of a foitnight without even a fractional set-back; some stocks, such as Chtcago Gas and Dis tillers, have advanced 15 points, while others have advanced in proportion. The outside interest is probably heavily engaged and while we do not anticipate any gient stringency in money, the bank reserves are at a point where cautious men will piefer to go slowly and a reaction Is possible at any time J. The big increase in the visible supply of wheat last week seems likely to be followed by another next week, ns tho deliveries at primary points yester day exceed the shipments by (1,000,000 bush els and to-day they are in excess by 1,300,000 bushels. The recovery In prices late in the day was attributed to Bradstreet't report, which made an increase in stocks or 4,539 -000 bushels East and a decrease of 116,000 bushels West of the Rocky Mountains a not increase of only 4,303.000 bushels for both coasts. The opening was about kc under yesterday's close and rurther declined Jc. then rallied c, closing steady. Corn was only moderately active and easier, influenced partially by fine weather, w hich, it was thought, would insure a con tinuance of liberal receipts, and also affected some by tho weakness in wheat. Another depressing feature was the big in crease of the stocks of contract in stor e, -which are now 5,. '3,000 bushels, against 4,353,000 bushels a week ago. Initial trades were at JiJc decline, afterward sagging off another ic on moderate offerings, the local crowd being more inclined to soil short; at the decline the demand improved greatly, but tho market recovered of tho break, changed somo, and ruled steady at the close. Dntci In thA rasli market Wflfft dnll and neglected. This served' to depress the speculative market, ana pleasure to sen carried down tbo price Hc Later there was a fair recovery. Provisions ruled strong, so strong that the bull cliqno imagined for a moment that Oc tober ribs could stand alone. They were Quickly undeceived when thoy saw It tum ble $1 per 100 in a minute or so and had to lift it again and carry it- Wiight bought very heavily of January pork, bis purchases on tho call being reckoned to amount to about 10,000 barrels. Ho likewise took liberally oi Novomber pork and ribs. The International Pncklng Cdnpany sold No vember pork freely. Pardridgo took a hand on tho bear side or January pork and the Hatelvs were sellers of lard. Prices had lieavv and frequent fluctuations in pork, but the market was nt its best toward the close. Lard was weak and closed lower than on the day before. Hibs closed I5o low er for October, 2c off for November and 7c higher for January. DUQUE8NE A LITTLE WEAKER And A 11 the Other leading Shares About Steady and Unchanged. LOCAL AKD GBNEEAL FINAKCIAL NEWS Tuesday, Oct. 25. The local stock market was moderately active and interesting to-day, but in the main it was weak, though here and there a stock that has been weakest of late showed something akin to strength. In this class Philadelphia Company was prominent, with a recovery to 21) sales, a close at 21J 21J and a bid ot 21 for a small lot alter the close. There seemed to he some pretty good orders in to buy and at the close it looked as if the 'stock would recover a fair percentage of its recent loss belore the end of the week. Boston is nibbling around on the buying side again,it is said, and if anything develops to scare the shorts. which is said to be probable, the recovery will be very sharp. The conspicuously weak spot of the list was Westlnghouso Airbrake, -which sold down to 132 and closed at 130) 181, the depressing influence being set foitn below. Duquesne traction was also nota bly weak, selling at 28 on call, at 28 after call and with more, oifeied act the same price. P. & B. traction was possibly somewhat firmer, but nothing else un derwent any appreciable change. The list, as a w hole bad an unstable look, the only redeeming, features being the recovering tendency shown by Philadelphia Company and the steadiness In Luster, Switch and Signal and United States Glass. Movements on 'Change. The first call was monopolized by Phila delphia Company and Pleasant Valley rail way, the former selling at 21)J21) and the latter at 25 generally in small lots. Phlllle subsequently sold at 2121K closing at 21t21, and P. V. at 25 closing at 25) bid. 1'., A. & M. traction sold at 4( and more could have sold at the same price. Be tween calls Airbrake sold nt 132 and at the close it was quoted at 130)131. Duqnesne traction sold nt 2S) at trie third, Peoplo's Pipeage at 15, and Chanter Valloy Gas at 12). After the call 50 shares Dr.quesne trac tion sold at 24 and 50 shares 111010 were of fered at the same figure. Westlnghouse Electric second preferred was quoted at 3737) and the i-crip at 9i95. After the close one of the brokers offered to trade in Switch and Signal at lsji either way. , Unlisted street railway shares closed as follows: P. & B. traction, 2t25; Duquesne traction. 2828U; P., A. & it. traction. U Westlnghouse Airbrake. It developed to-day that the weakness of Westlnghouse Airbrake was caused by an advertisement of the New York Brake Com pany, embodying a letter from Vice Presi dent Webb, of the New Tork Central Rail, road Company. In this letter Mr. Webb says, among other things, that "there is no difference between the operation of tho Westlnghouse airbrake and the airbrakes of the New Tork Airbrake Company." He also says that "we are satisfied that there are no practical objections to allowing tbo cars equipped with the New Tork brake' to be used in conjunction Kith those equipped with the Westlnghouse brake. I have, therefore, issued oiders removing all re strictions as to the use of cars eaulpped with your brakes; and hereaiter cars so equipped will be received and operated bv this company and treated precisely the same as tho cars equipped with the Westing house brake." This Is accepted as meaning that the New Tork Central management be lieves that the New Tork Brake Company's apparatus can be used interchangeably! with the Westlnghouse without injuring the hitter's patent rU'ht. but the two companies are engaged in litigation on this and other points, and until they are legally deter mined the New 1 ork Centralis not likely to take any steps looking to the extensive use ol the New 1 ork brake. It is possible, how ever, that they may have some advance in formation on the probable result of the liti gation, and, Governor Flow er being inter ested in both the New Tork Brake Companv and the New York Central Railroad Com pany, they have been induced to put his Drake on wherever and whenever possible. This letter or Mr. Webb's, however, will not add to or subtract from tho mei it of either brake. The Westlnghouse brake has been demonstrated to be the superior of any other ever made time and again, the last demonstration being investigated by Gover nor Flower himself. It was only a short time since that the Chicago, Burlington and Quinoy Railroad, which had enthusiastically adopted the New Tork biake, tluew it off the road in disgust, and declared emphati cally that there was nothing in the Drake line to compare with the Westlnghouse ap paratus. The Dispatch does not think the investors in Airbrake have anything to fear from the New Tork Brake Company, and the West lnghouse people are serenely confident. The price 01 the stock may decline further as the lesult of sales by those wbo believe they can get theirstock back at lower prices, but the price ot the shares will have no ef- foct on the dividend paying power of the company. It is a dangerous stock to short, as there Is no telling what morning a short may wake up to find a 10 per cent dividend staring him in the face Mining Shares. The story about Enterprise Mining Com pany, printed exclusively in The Dispatch, caused a good deal of talk on the street to day, but the stock wus not mentioned on 'Change. Fi lends of the company wero In clined to believe that the situation had been exnggerated and that Messis. Crawford, Posey et al and their plant were all right. "George Crawford has had along and varied experience in the. mining business," said one of them this afternoon, "especially the legal end or it, and they are not likely to take any steps in the dark. I think you will find they aie all right and will continue to do a paying business at the old stand for some time to come" A telegram was shown on 'Change during the last call, announcing the fact that the company had declared the regular monthly dividend of 2 per cent, or 10 cents per share, which is evidence that the company is still making a little money either on their own or some other property. To meet the loss and provide for the luture, the company issued $50,000 in bonds. The mine is looking better than it has lor a year, and gives promise of again becoming a profit payer. A new discovery or rich ore has been made near the surface, about 200 feet from the shaft northeast toward the Guston, and it promises to yield well. Financial Notes. H. M. BUTTER IS BOOMING. The Klgln Board Establishes Another Ad vance In Creamery Roasted Coffee Again Advanced Grain Continues Dull and Weak Potatoes Higher In the Country. Tuesday, Oct. 25. As foreshadowed in this column yester day Elgin butter quotations were advanced lc per lb. at the meeting of the Elgin Board on Monday, and one , result will be a corre sponding advance here the latter part of the week. Prices are still too low, it is said, because they are below the parity of export, and as dealers here are only getting about one-third enough for their trade, it follows that the condition of supply and demand justifies a still higher range. All grades of roasted coffee were advanced cperlb. to-day and the maiket was quoted stiong at the advance. Following is the last statement of the supply of Brazil coffee in stock and afloat: Total stock in New York, 185159; total stock in Baltimore, 3,020; total stoclt in New Orleans, 26,682; total stock in United States, 214,861; aflu.it from Rto per steam to October 22. 205,000: afloat from Rio to sail October 22, 17,000; afloat from Santos per steam and sail to October 22. 102,000; afloat from Victoria to October 1, 18.000; afloat from Europe to October 3, 1,000. Total, 557.86L Same time last year, 549,474. "Potatoes are too low at 7o75c per bushel," said one of the produce commis sion men to-day. 'Trices have advanced 3ffl 4c per bushel in tho country, and we must get E083o per bushol here or else do busi ness tor nothing. It looks to me as ir the market was going to be higher." Applos seem to be on the eve of doing bet ter. There is less poor stock on the market, the range or prices 1b not bo wide and all stock is rather firmly held. Eggs aro steady, but poultry, while about unchanged in price, is easy under continued heavy receipts. Everything in the line of grain, reed and bny continues weak and depressed under heavy receipts. Too much grain in sight and a too rapid accumulation in elevator stocks are causing continued weakness in prices. At last ac counts the visible supply or grain cast or the Rocky Mountains was about 55,000.000 bush els of wheat, 12,170,000 bushols or com, -and 7,550,000 bushels or oats, an incroase over the preceding week in each instance, the in crease of wheat being about 4,000,000 bushels. The visible supply at the same time in 1890 was only 18,607,000 bushels of wheat and 8 853,000 bushels of corn, while in the phe nomenal year or 1891 the supply apparent was about 24,000,000 bushels less ot wheat and about 4,000,000 bushels less or corn.
