m? ., S-O S" v.- ? THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH. MONDAY, OCTOBER 10. 189a "l v GOOD TRADE REPORTS.. Business Conducted on a Healthj Basis and the Volume Large. A BIG DECREASE IN FAILURES. An Advance in Breakfast Bacon and Sngar Cured fclioulders. LATE CROP GOSSIP AND STATISTICS Saturday, Oct a Evidences have multiplied during the week that general business is being con ducted on a strong and healthy basis, and that the autumn movement is fully up to expectations. Local bank exchanges show on increase of 32.7 per cent over last week and 19 per cent over the week of 1891 cor responding with the present, and reports from all distributing points have been of a very encouraging character, not the least important return being the improvement in the iron and steel trade. The publication of the returns of failures, say Henry Clews & Co., has confirmed the feeling that the trade of the country is in an exceptionally sound condition, which has served to strengthen confidence.. It appears from the returns that tor the past nine months the amount of liabilities involved in business failuibo within the United States amounted to t.000.000, while for tlio same time in l9l the total was $13S,SuO,OuO, shoa in? a decrease in the M months' iutetval of 14 per cent. In Ne York City the liabilities, lor the same monih, liave fallen lroin 515,700,000 last year to 0,4011,000 this year, or at the rate of 59 per cent, In no year since 1SS2 has the amount or liabilities been so low as at present: and making allowance for the increase of poou latum, the ratio is even much lower than in that exceptional ear. Taking an average ot the last ten jeais, the atercjre amount of failures within the llrst nine months ol the veal, Iia- been $10;,000,090: which is $30,000,000 l)oe the experience' Of the current year, makum no ullonancc for an increase ot neailv 30 per cent in population during the interval. Iho looses of the South incident to two years of excessive crops of cotton hadpiepaiod us to expect a very unlavor able ;-hoin;r trom mat section, and vet theictho amount ot ailnres ha been only S11.100 0U0 aeainst 21,90l,0tK) in 1S9L In the lepies-ed Pacific Slates o should have ex pected an increase of lailures, and yet the Ji.ibiliti"- theie show a slight decrease upon last year's. The-e are most encouraging lac:: the mote to because they admit ot no gainsaying. Crop Gossip. Prime's leport yesterday: Every thins very diy west ol Mississippi; need rain for lall plowing; pastilles even drying up. The movement of corn in the far West is traced largely to the fact that tanners do not care to build cribs. The reeent interruptions of tra'le brought into the countrj about 10,000 barrels oi re lliicd sugar ircn Canada ami a considorable amount tioin England. The decline of the week Will Mid such importations. Deliveries ciiu now be made promptly of all grades. While the condition of supplies of raw sugars for some time may prevent a further decline, there is no reason to look tor an iilhei advance in granulated, but rather a llun and steady maiket lor some time to come.
