THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, s MONDAY, OCTOBER 3. 1893.
COMMERCIAL POINTS:
The Uew Month Opens With a Cheer
ful Feeling Prevalent.
STAPLES A LITTLE IREEGDLAE.

CORN, MILLFEED AKD DAT AREIOWIR
Saturday, Oct. 1.
According to the Clearing House figures
the volume of general business this week
was 4.7 per cent smaller than last week, but,
us compared xrith the figures of the like
week of 1S91, an increase of 7.1 per cent is
shown. The movement slackened some
what during the closing days of the week,
as it invariably does toward the close of a
month, but there were plenty of indications
.hat trade was improving and that increased
activity would prevail during October.
Some pretty good authorities expect that
politics will interfere more or less with
business, but in a general way the
prevalent tcntiment Is confident and
cheerful. In the way of prices staples ruled
rather IrreRuliir. Wheat and; flour were
firm; oats tended upward: corn, feed and
liny were lower; supar was easy; coffee was
"little stronger it anything; provisions
closed lower for nams and bacon; rice,
uolasses and syrups were Armor; dairy pro
uucts, ctfgs and poultry were steady to firm;
vefretaDles and trutts were slightly higher;
mackerel and a few other varieties of fish
were advanced; drygoods, boots and shoes
and full and winter clothing were active at
stronc prices, and hides and leather were
fiinier w ithout being any higher.
Crop Gossip.
Prime made the follow in? report Friday:
The almost perfect weather for the matur
ity of the corn crop continues, and is almost
tlcntical with that which we experienced a
carajio. Taking the corn belt as a whole,
I percent of the crop is safefiorn damage
y frost. Sprins wheat reports show neatly
alf the crop threshed. In Northern Min
esota and Xorth Dakota, where 60 per cent
f last yeai's crop was expected, threshings
w do not indicate the j icld will be 00 per
rnt. Farmers are not selling veiy freely,
ut aie looking for better prices later on.
there have been no killin? irosts. Ground
eponed generally to be in good condition
oi fall plowing. Goneral situation in win
ter wheat belt is now a dry one; still farmers
are 6eedlns winter wheat everywhere, look
ing ror rain lator. Excellent progress has
been made with seeding uo to date, buttbeio
is no disposition to push seotfing, for the
rejsou that there is ample time to get wheat
into ground and growing belore cold
weather.
The Cincinnati J'rice Current's estimate is
for a crop of 135,000,000 bushels of corn in
Kansas, where the Government report indi
cated a crop or only 90,000,000. The yield of
the State of Kans.is U-t year was It2.000.000
bushels, in round numbers, so that if tins re
port is correct the btate is again blessed
B-ituanunusu-Uly good crop. In 1S93 this
total ciop was only a little over 55,10,000
buthels.

folks formerly used lard for
all such purposes. When it
disagreed with any of the
family (which it often did,)
we said it was "too rich'
We finally tried
and not one of us has had an
attack of "richness" since.
We further found that, unlike
lard, Cottolene had no un
pleasant odor when cooking,
and lastly Mother's favorite

a big recommendation which
clinched the matter. So that's
why we always fry ours 7n
