au AFIRST WARD NUISANCE. " Many Property Holders Petition the Mayor ' 'Agatnst Several Disorderly Houset One of the Complainants Talks or the Places. 1 Mayor Gourley yesterday received a pe tition signed by a number of First ward .citizens complaining about disorderly bouses on Liberty street, near the Point. tThe bouses complained ot are Nos. 1, 12, 14 and 18 Liberty street. The petition recites that they are a constant annoyance and in convenience. The petition was sicned by Jaany property owners, among them George Hontootb, John Ingalls, Huch Median, P. T. Maloney, Georee Dalor, Mrs. JIartin Joyce, Matt Cavanaugh and J. Ilawortli, of Haworth & Dewhurst. The petition was referred to Superintendent ot Police O'Mara. who will investigate the com plaint i George Montooth, who was seen lasfnight, said the houses comnlained of were an eye sore to the city. The occupants, he said, were constantly disorderly, and .be had made repeated efforts to have them sup pressed. His family could not go into their yard or to their front porch without being insulted. He had reported the matter to Superintendent O'Mara and Chief Brown before. He alleged that the petitioners interested were going to the courts if neces sary to abate the nuisance "I have had to fight down there until my bands were too sore to work," he said, whije explaining the kind of people that lrequent that particular tection of the city. "The most dissraceful conduct is allowed and practiced down there and no effort is made to interfere with them either by day orbynieht." An effort was made to sec Chief Brown about the matter. At 10 o'clock last night it was announced at his home that he bad retired and refused to be disturbed. Gentlemen's Footwear. There will probably alwavs be a select few who regard "ready-made" shoos with aversion and who prefer goin tlirouzli the tedious ordeal of being measured and fitted when they need shoes, but the greater num ber bv iar prefer bein fitted from.the stock or such a store as Leslie & Co. bave recently opened at No. 91 Filth avenue in this city. Leslie Co., the custom shoe manufactur ers of Pittsfield, Mass., are the exclusive manufacturers and retailers of the widely known "Leslie shoe" lor men. Tlio "Leslie shoe" is a piece of footwear which needs no word of introduction in the larso cities of the East where it is known and uoin. But a word about it may bo of Interest in this city.
