.3PP!6 7 . "CTJ -. V- THE PriTQBUEG DISPATCH, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 189a n SOME BIG DECLINES And Demoralization Follow Cholera's Invasion of New York. A MAD RUSH TO GET FROM UKDER. Kipper, lead, Pugar, R. I., Mop, N. E. and llectric Weakest. HEAYI TRADING IX THE LiST HOUR Xe- Tortc, Sept. 14. The stock market to-day reflected the better feeling engen dered by the settlement of the difficulties be tween the .Reading and its employes and the sharp and general upward movement in the list sufficiently demonstrated the char acter of the greater portion of the selling of the last tew days. Tnere was a halt also in the decline in Western Union, accom panied by some recovery in its price, and while the stock tailed to properly respond to the announcement of the increase in the capital, the buying was good and its net gain of moment The bears, however, while submitting to the setback which they afiect to believe is only temporary, did not change their ground in the least, still laying stress upon the prospects of dearer money with a continuation of gold shipments and the other unfavorable factors in the situa tion. That they did not lack the courage of their convictions was shown by a sharp drive at Northern Pacific prelerred and the fi per ceut bonds which depressed the Etock nearly 2 per cent. The general list was still narrow and in the mam featureless, though displaying a 1 firm temper almost throughout the day, 'which was aided in some degree by the strength shown in the industrials, among which Distillers was conspicuous by a large business and a rise of nearly 2 per cent. The grangers still presented a stubborn front to the pressure brought to bear, but there was less animation in them, and as a rule small fluctuations. The improvement in the morning was led by Beading and the opening in that stock- vas marked by heavy trailing ana some excitement, the stock selling at from 35 to C5JS on different sides of the crowd. The animation soon subsided, however, and the stock made but little further pi ogress, though the list after the opening advances, r.hich extended to 1 per cent, made further slight can's when the upward movement wa checked and no further advance was made during tuo day except slight tractions bete and thcie and a, sharp rise in Distillers which readied nearly 2 per cent. Tliodiivoat Xorthern Pacific preferred weakened the rest of the list to some ex tent, but there was no concession of note until the Iat hour, when it became knonn that the cholera had at last actually ob. tamed a foothold in tuo city, and there was u mad ru-di to get out of everything. Trices broke badly under the pre-Toure, liiK- the market became extremely active, the trans action In tl.e last 45 minutes exceeding these of anj other hour of the day. There was evidence of-un effort to cover, and some stocks did rally slightly, but as a rule thn last prices of tho day weie the lowest, and the market closed active, feverish and ez. cito 1 at the decline. Hie final changes were generally small looses, but Northern 1'acille, lireterred, is down 2JS', Lead IJs. Sugar lji, and ltoCK Inland, .Missouri Pacific, New England aud Di ctrie eacu 1 per cent. Kailioad bonus were stimulated by the animation in stocks somew-iat, but there was still little animation or featuie of note in the u.aiket, and on -ales ot $1,211,000 the changes are as insignificant as usual. Texas l'aeiflc seconds displayed some strength, but tho Northern Pacific 5s wore weak in connection with tho diivcat the stock and leil away 1 per cent. .iiiuni" snares ciosea as louows: Crown Point 41 Ophir 225 on. On this the market started with a tumble of JJC- After a great lot of corn was dumped tue outsido buying began, but laterdlspatches indicated serious damage from the freeze. The mar ket made a tebound of a fnll cent on this news. It was no sooner up than it sold off again to Je better than the low point early. There was a second rally before midday ou a second loading ur for a possible frost to night. This was tollowod by a third weak spell belore 1 o'clock, when prices diopped as low as at the opening. The close was at 14,0 from bottom prices for the dav. Wheat was exceedingly slow and general ly weak. There was an unusual dearth of news affecting the market and tho slight change which took place seemed to bo duo almost entirely to the fluctuations in corn. Pardridge w as said to be a (rood buyer on all the breaks and Mitchell also bought freely, but Logan and several other pioml nent operators sold on all the strong spots. A depressing Influence was Sraditrei Vs re ported increase of 1,000,000 bushels in tho available stocks on both coasts. In oats there were numeious periods of strength, but they were taken advantage of by tho longs to sell and the increased offer ings finally created weakness. There was a light trade in provisions, and prices, after fair action early, kept in very narrow limits. The featuie or tho early market was weakness caused by tho very heavy hog movement. From this tnere was a very good l ecovery, entirely in sympathy with tho excited and higher coin market on frost predictions. Luster's Capital Stock tfill Be Increased Before Long. AIRBRAKE CONTINUES TO ADVANCE AYednf.sday, Sept 14. Cholera news depressed the New York stock market to-day. The market opened strong as the result of the settlement of the troubles between the Beaming Eailroad and its employes, and ruled strong on buying by London and the shorts until about2 p. Id., when demoralization set in consequence of the announcement bv the Board of Health that there had been several deaths from Asiatic cholera in the city during the preceding 21 hours. Under this influence nearly everything broke more or less and the close was at the lowest The news did not reach Pittsburg before the close of the local board, and it remains to be seen what effect it will .have here. It cannot well help being depressing, and it is possible that merlons calculations regarding the im mediate future of the markot will nave to be revised. Phlllle'd Dlvidrnd. On this subject Socie tary Sillier talked to TnE Dispatch as follows: "Thore hns been more or less talk about an increase for souio time past, and it will probably ultimately be made, but tho directors aie evidontly in no hurry about it, as the matter did not even come up for con sideration at this afternoon's meeting. Tho plant represents ton times as much as tho capital invested, and would sell any day lor so vcral times as much." Wentinghonse Elf c'ric According to tho Boston Stews Hureau a Boston gentleman, who has just made a thorough investigation of the Westinghonso Electric Company with Mr. George Westlng hoose, Jr., says it is about time to state facts regarding the enormous business the com pany in doing. lie says its business Is upon a cash basis; its pcicentage ot net earnings gteater than any company doing a liko business: that its goods tiavo the preference over all others, and that prospects ate that it will doublo its present business inside of six months. Tho company has perfected new inventions which It will put upon tho market shortly. The gentleman fur ther fays that it Is out of tho power of competing companies to forco a consolidation, as those in control of Hie stock to-day would not sell out at double piesent figures. This samo gentleman says that if his statements are doubted he stands ready to tako a commit tee composed of the financial editors of the Boston dallies to tho woiks of the Westing house Company and allow it to publish tho result of its observations and Investigations.
