never went to school, was rais
dist and he is now 65 years old. & -,iccn
tells that he is an englishman. He said
that 24 years ago he was stricken with palsy
while working in a mine, had to be carried
Lome, and for 21 years could not walk with
out a crutch or cane. Three years ago he
went to a camp meeting where divine heal
ing was preached. As he hobbled away he
stopped, leaned against a tree and prayed to
be cured. He was cured and had not used
a cane since.
Cured or the Grip by Faith.
After that he grew lukewarm for a time,
he said, and in December, 1890, was taken
ill with the grip, so that his death was ex
pected. On "er Year's day he believed
that his last moment had come, and, being
left alone lor awhile, he began to pray.
Then he heard the voice of God, as clear as
words could be, saying, "If you will promise
to serve me all the rest of your days, I will
raise you up." The promise was made,
3Ir. Hitchcock arose from his bed well and
he has from that day devoted himself to
preaching the gospel, the power of divine
healing and lull sanctification. He read
texts yesterday from the 2evr Testament
to support his claim that believers should
have the power to heal the sick.
Mr. Hitchcock said he expected a young
man who had been cured of paralysis to be
prescnt, but lie w as not He said that by his
prayers two persons in Pittsburg had been
miraculously cured of the grip. They be
came well and arose Irom their beds at the
very time that he was praying for them in
a distant place. He gave the names of
Mrs. Anderson, of Fulton street, and J. M.
Howser, superintendent of the Open Door
Mission, on Fourth avenue.
Mr. Hitchcock was followed by Mrs. E.
Fenton. Sue said that God took care of
her and punished all who tried to injure
her. To bUpport this claim she told three
stories.
Il-r Knemles Severely Punished.
Some time ago, when she was holding di
vine healing meetings in Ohio, a woman
told falsehoods about her. 'I went and
told God about it," she said, "and I asked
Him why He let that woman do such
tilings. He struck that woman blind, and
she has never seen anything since. I could
have told her why she went blind. Then
there was a man who tried to break
up our meetings. I went and told God
Ebout him, and the man was stricken with
paralysis and fell out of his buggy. I could
have told liini v. ho did it. Up in Clarion
county there was a young man dying of
dropy. I went to pray with him, to heal
him, but he would not let me. Then I said
to him, '.Before you die you will see the
de il in the flesh. He died two davs after
ward, and just before he died he screamed
out, 'I see the room full of devils." He
died screaming and holding to the bed to
keep the devils from dragging him away."
Mrs. Fenton then pointed to a reporter
and said, "Take care what you write about
we. Look out. The Lord is with me, and
if yon write lalsehoods you will be pun
ished." There were afterward short talks by men
and women present, and the exercises all
through were enlivened with sacred songs.

The Jewish synagogue B'nai Israel, on
"Washington street, was formerly dedicated
yesterday afternoon. At 1:30 r. M. the con
gregation of the old synagogue, at the cor
ner ot Third avenue and Grant street,
formed in lino and marched out Fifth av
enue to their new temple of worship. As
they proceeded their line was enforced by
others, until, when they came to a halt in
front of the synagogue, there -mere fully
6,000 of them, "filling Washington street
from Fifth avenue to Wyhe avenue.
At 2 o'clocfc'the doors were thrown open,
and a terrible rush ensued to get inside
Men, women and children vied with one an
other to see who should enter first; women
with children in their arms jostled and
crowded with gray-headed old men, and
strongmen elbowed their way through to
the doors. At the three doors were sta
tioned six policemen under the charge of
Captain Denniston and Lieutenant Gallant
The officers had all they could do to resist
the crowds and maintain order. The crowd
passed into the building packing it as full
as it would hold, while those ontside
clamored to get in.
Theiexercises were opened by the chantor
" -hoir si"!-'J "'Ir BcauHfi'o
and c. ..0.is. iw - ..At Am
Thy Teuts, O Jacob," and l Will Extol
Thee, O Lord." Mr. Kornblum, in a short
address, gave a history of the congregation,
and ended by presenting the key ol the new
synagogue to the President, Morris Kosen
thal. Mr. Rosenthal accepted the key.
Babbi Isaac Davis, in a short sermon and
prayer dedicated the synagogue.
Short addresses were made by Kev. Sa
linger, Rev. E. K. Donehoo and Joseph
Stadfiehl.after which the choir sang, 'Praise
Ye the Lord," and Kabbi Davis closed the
exercises with the benediction. The syna
gogue is a handsome brick building, with
white stone trimmings. In the center
of the auditorium is a raised plat
form for the chantor and the choir.
At the head of the room is
the altar. The room was decorated yestar
dav with tropical plants and cut flowers.
It will scat about 1,500 people.a large deep
balcony running around both sides and the
back. The church cost ?65,000 including
the lot The synagogue has 100 members
and about 1,100 pew holders. About one
half of the amount has been paid on the
church, and the members expect to pay it
all off inside of three years.
THE LAND OF THE EISING SUN.
A Missionary From Japan Relates Some
of Ills Experlencrs.
Bev. J. P. Moore, a missionary of the Re
formed church, who has spent eight years
in Japan and is now on a vacation to Amer
ica, preached last evening in St, Mark's
Memorial Church on North Highland ave
nue, giving an exceedingly interesting ac
count of the difficulties encountered by an
evangelist in the Orient. The "Land of
the Rising Sun" is slowly becoming con
verted from the superstitions, mythological
religious practices which it has lollowed
since the sixth century before Christ, and at
present there are 300 Christian Japanese
churches, having a communicant member
ship of about 50,000 souls.
The President of the first Japanese Par
liament, organized three years ago, was a
Christian, having received the sacrament of
baptism at the hands of Eev. Moore. The
gentleman predicted the evangelization of
Japau, and gave a glowing description of
the beautiful country and the intellectuality
of its people.
This evening Mrs. Moore, who accompa
nies her husband, will deliver an address in
Grace Church, Grant aud Webster streets,
on the '"Women of Japan." She will on
this occasion wear a robe presented to her
by the wife of a Japanese nobleman. It is
said to be an unusually prettr garment,
greatly enhancing the beauty of the lady.

On Flowery Beds of Ease.
It is the dream of all to get along in this
world as easily as possible. We all sigh for
the "flowery beds of ease" of the poet, and
many women have discovered the materiali
zation of their dream in Camellia flour,
that rich, pure white and always regular
flour that makes the bake day a pleasure.
Baking with Camellia is baking on truly,
floury beds of ease. Your grocer keeps it.
