LATEST CROP AND TRADE GOSSIP
Saturday, Aug. 27.
"While reports of dullness have not been
lacking along the wholesale mercantile line
this week there has been a fair movement
in staples, with the inquiries, particularly
from the agricultural districts, foreshadow
ing an early increase in the demand. So
far as the bank exchanges are a barometer,
they show that business fell oS somewhat
from last week, and that the volume of
trade was 15.7 per cent larger than that ot
the corresponding week of last year. The
leading trade influences are steadily becom
ing more stimulating, and merchants are
sanguine regarding the coming autumn. As
to prices, wheat, corn and hay were weak;
oats strong; flour was barely steady; coffee
was higher; sugar firmer; provisions were
weak and lower; dairy products and eggs
lilafce-; live stock down; garden truck weak
and hides and leather a shade off. Collec
tions were fair in nearly all sections.
Crop Gossip.
Prime's latest: Lower temperature, ac
companied by showers, especially west of
Mississippi. In Nebraska think corn lias
made up a little lost time during present
month. Illinois Indiana and Ohio need
until September 15 to September 20 to ma
ture their crop. In Kansas and Missouri I
think thev will pull through by 15th,
bnt corn this season is so uneven and was
planted over such long period of time that
it is almost imi)osiblo to determine with
auv degree or accuracy when the bulk or
nrn will in nfo from frost. There is also
nide Giflerenco of opinion as to effects of
ruin on corn now. Ol course It will do no
harm, but rains havo eomo so late that tbey
cannot havo the same effect they would in
oulinarv seasons. Great progress has been
made tliis week threshing o.its. Good price
made fi-ec movement in interior. A cor-re-iiondcnt
who ha just been over ten
counties in South Dakota leports wheat
crop will not be with 25 per cent of former
estimate". In North Dakota about 20 per
cent of the w heat lias been cut.
Grasshoppers In countless numbers have
been destroying entile fields of oats in Hu
ron county and adjoining counties, Ohio.
Caiclul observations in Oneida and Otsego
counties. New Yoik, within the last week
indicate that the hop crop in that section will
be below the avcr.ice In weight, but. so far,
of better than average quality. Occasional
vard are seen which promise from 1,500 to
3 !?O0 pounds to the acre, but the great ma
Joritv will lull below the average. Iteports
lruni" Belgium and England announce "fair"
crops; but the En2li-h product is inferior in
mzeatiw btiength. Encland uses about 450,
(01 bales and from the-T)reen outlook will
liccil from 200.000 to 230,000 from abroad. As
the Geriran crop is jeporied "down to last

CHICAGO 'CHANGE.
A Little Improvement in Talao In Every
thing Excnptlnc Corn.
Chicago, Aug. 27. The nsnal Saturday
short session of the Board of Trade was un
evenful, and the prices of all the articles
traded In closed without marked change
from those which ruled nt the close yester
day. With the exception of corn every
thing shows some improvement in value.
The cboleni scare Is losing its influence and
this, in connection with some bullish news,
imparted a better tone to wheat. English
cables came In stronger, the exports lor the
week proved unexpectedly heavy, being
4,606,010 bushels in wheat'and flour from
both coasts, making 10,500,000 bU9hels during
tho p-ist four weeks, and all the news from
South Dakota went to show that the
crop there was seriouMv injured by
the intense heat of a few weeks aso. There
wet e also indications that the predictions
of an early falling off in farmers deliveries
wero well founded, and this was considered
a strong factor. Besidoathere was a report
in circulation that England had quaran
tined against all vessels from Russia, and
this was construed to mean that Great
Britain would now be more dependent than
ever upon shipments from America. In
view ot all this there was a more confident
lone, with more disposition to buy and less
selling pressure. As the market began to
show flrmnoss, shorts became alarmed and
covered Irecly, this buying having an Im
portant bearing on tho advance.
Corn was weak and lower; the fine weather
everywhere and tho increasing fa vorableness
ot crop reports were the chief causes of the
weakness, as they discouraged the longs and
prompted liquidation while there was only
a meager demand, and then only to cover
shorts and secure profits.
Oats were firm, with fluctuations confined
to Vic range, closing at the top at WJfo, an
advance of yBc.
Hog products were stronger early, but
eased- off later. Hogs at the yards were
higher and the liquidation of long property
wasappsrently about over. September porfc
opened loo higher, at 110 M.told to 110 o7C
reacted to $10 40, rallied and closed steady at
$10 5a lard is 2o and ribs 25o higher.

New Tobk, Aug. 27. The stock market
to-day was'of the usual half holiday charac
ter and the barren wastes of the general list
were enlivened by a few stocks which
showed some activity or made substantial
movements. Among railroad shares, Bead
ing still held the premier position in point
of activity, but there was a marked absence
of yesterday's pressure to sell and the stock
was held steady throughout On the other
hand, there were free realizations in West
ern TJnibn in the early dealings which
knocked it down 1 per cent, only a
portion of which was afterward re
gained, but all other railroad shares with
exception of Minneapolis and St. Louis pro
longed were held quite within narrow
limits. Minneapolis and St. Louis also
showed the .effect of realizations at first,
dronplng from 42 to 89, but the loss was re
covered later in the session. Considerable
excitement attended tho dealings In Susrar
at the opening, the belief that Mr. White
had been selling leading to the desire on the
part of, the opeiators to follow his example,
and a. loss of 1 per cent was scored before
the stock recovered support enough
to rally it; which was done in a most
substantial manner. The rest of the market
remained utterly featureless, hut the cloe
was firm, though dull, generally at slight
fractional gains for the day, the only marked
exception being Cotton OH, which sold
down 1 percent.
Railroad bonds were still dull, but dis
played a tendency to yield, Green Bay in

Government bonds were dull and steady.
