TE& P1TTSB1XRG DESPATCH! TUESDAY. AUGUST 23. 1892. s CENSTJBED TEE CAPTAIN. - Inquiry Into the Death or Fireman Cookof, of the G corse Shlras. TI.e Coroner's jury in the case of J. N. Cootes, the fireman of the towboat George Shiras, who was drowned in the Allegheny river Saturday evenlnjr, yesterday returned n verdict of drowning due to the negligence of the boat's crew. Magistrate Gripp was acting Coroner. : Officer JUcAvoy told his story of the drowning as he had seen it, and as related in The Dispatch yesterday. The rough lancuaire used by Capt Frank Gould when the officer asked that something be done to save Cooke', and the general indifference displayed bv the crew were also related by the officer, who was fully corroborated by several other witnesses. Among them were A. G. Hastings and "V. S. Shallenberger, who witnessed the incideut from their office on Duquesne way, and F. W. "McNeal, a coal dealer. Captain Gould was severely censured by the acting Coroner. When put on the stand he testified that he had thrown a tilank into the water alter Cookes tell in, Intending to jump in after him when he rose again. The mate had thrown a line to the drowning man, but it was too short to reach him. No other effort had been made 10 save him, and the Captain acknowledged using improper language to Officer McAvoy, but claimed he was excited at the time. Tne verdict ol the jury was approved audibly by the large crowd which had gath ered to hear the case. Kulnnd Temples. Our bodies are the temples of onr souls.
