THE PTTTSBURG DISPATOR SATURDAT, .AUGUST 13, '1891
3FFICER tiRR'S STORY.
Ie Tells the Coroner All About the
- ifoblestown Tragedy.
OULD BATE SHOT KEED FIRST,
'ut the Murderer looted Harmless and
Snrprised the Officer.
'HE TEEDICTS IK BOTH THE CASES
The Coroner's inquest in the case of
lanin Reed and Hugh Coyle, who lost
heir lives in the Xoblestown tragedy of
Saturday last, Tvas concluded yesterday.
The jury found that after killing Coyle,
teed committed suicide.
Several witnesses were examined by the
Joroner- The first one was Fritz Klein.
t was thought he had omitted tellinc all be
:new, bnt he cither did not know anything
urther, orTefnsed to tell. He admitted
eeing a stove and two chairs in the ice
lonse, hut did not know if they had been
lsed by Eeed.
John A. Orr, Chief of Police ofWashing
on, was the next and most important wit
less of the day. His description of the at
ack on the ice house, his own wounding at
he hands of Eeed and the subsequent burn
ng of the ice house, was interesting. He
aid:
Officr Orr's Story.
I knew Martin Eeed and Hush Coyle. I
jot to Noblestown last Saturday afternoon
tboutl o'clock with lie. Williamson and
Mr. lIcBryde. JlcBryde put away our team
ind went for assistance while Williamson
And I watched the place where we supposed
Reed was in hiding. There was no one In
light or the icehoue when we went into
Wacber's yard except Klein, the last wit
ness who was working in the yard. In
vbout lialfan bonr McBryde camo back and
'aid lie could not get any help, except tho
os In a nearby stone qnarry. I told him to
jet him, and we made an arrangement that
when they came tip that two of us would
;lose In on the house in the front and the
ather two In the rear. ,..,.,
1 then spoke to Klein and asked him
where Beed was. but he answered that ho
did not know. I then went over the little
uridge that crosses the hollow and went up
a the door of the icehone. There was an
utside and inside door. The outer door
vas open, but tne inner one was fastened
with a pin on the inside. I called back to
the men that Eeed was in theie sure. The
other three kept their positions on the out
side and I kicked the fastened door open. I
conld see all over the room, but no one was
there.
He Faced the Murderer.
'I stepped in and walked to the middle of
th 'ooui, where thei e was a stove and two
chains. I saw the floor above, and Reed at
that instant came up very deliberately to
the front edge of it. He appeared as though
he was about to speak. As he cot up be
fired on me. He then went back and laid
flown. I went to the door and called to
Williamson and McBryde that he had done
me. JlcBryde pulled me out. Eeed then
ran to a window, and when he saw we were
all on the outside he fastened the door
agnin.
When 1 was inside I could have shot tlrst
U I had been Inclined, but Keed and I ox
changed no words. After Dr. Taylor had
dressed my wound I went backto the house,
hut 1 was not close enougc,to the building
to see If the man who shot Coyle was Eeed
or not. I then sent to Oakdale lor (runs and
to Washington for help. But people began
to flock in from every direction and in a
short time there were a thousand people
arftnndtheie. Five guns came from Oak-
dale and we stationed mem. arouna me
building.
i Didn't Car to Go Inside.
(I saw Mr. Wacher after I was shot. When
Ifirst talked to him he seemed to think
Heed was not in the building, but when I
cuggested to him to go in and see, he said he
w ould not do that for $10,noo.
The witness did not know much about
-he burning of the building.
Samuel "Williamson, a Midway constable
who was with Chief Ofr, corroborated the
testimony of Orr and then said that when
the building was fired Eeed came to a win
dow and remained about a minute and then
went back. AVacher remarked to the wit
ness that if tbey had gone to him in the first
place he would have gone in and brought
Eeed out without any trouble. "William
son wanted him to go In then, bnt 'Wacher
refused.
In his charge to the jury among other
tbiDgs, Coroner McDowell said:
Ton have a rieht to say whether yon ap
prove of such means as were employed to
take Eeed, or whether tho civil authorities
bhould have been called into action. Of
course, in some instances our civil authori
ties do not amount to much, but these vio
lent gatherings do not tend to elevate tho
moral standing of any community.
The Verdict Rendered.
The jury returned the followin? verdict:
Martin Beed, aged about 38 years, came to
his death Saturday, August 6,1892, about 8
o'clock v. m. in the icehouse on the property
of I'eter Wacher, Noblestown, North Fay
ette township, from a gunshot wound
through the heart, fired by hi own hand.
From the evidence, tho Jury And that said
Martin Eeed had been convicted and sen
tenced to be hanged for murder in Washing
ton county, l'a., and had broken Jail and
escaped from there, and had been located In
said icehouse, and was about to be captured
by deputy sheriffs from Washington county,
and being heavily armed, a crowd
or gathering of people assembled
at said place and set file to said icehouse,
ciemating said Martin Eeed after he bad
shot himself, and we further condemn the ac
tion of the said unlawful assembly In burn
ing said icehouse down, and In not appealing
to the civil authorities for assistance.
The verdict in the Coyle case read:
Hugh Coyle came to his death on Saturday,
August 0, 1892. about 5 30 o'clock T. v., fiom a
gunshot wound received flora a gnu or re
volt er ill the hands of Martin Beed, an
escaped murderer, whom he wasassisting to
capture, lie being concealed in the icehouse
on the property of Peter Wacher, Xobles
town, North Fayette township, Pa., and we
lnrtherfind said shooting was done with
lelonlous Intent.
