E5?IK3335?2rSS2 IKaBilKIBMBiB T&WQ$g 13 THE PITTSBURG- DISPATCH, SUNDAY. AUGUST 7, 189a PEICE FERDINAND OP BOUMAXXA Mr. King and his bride, nee Zug, are en Joying what might be called the continna tion or the sequel to their honeymoon at home. They are living at present opposite Jtfr.Zug's house, preparatory tohaving an es tablishment ior themselves in the autumn. A most painful accident, if it be not the ' termination, as is sadly feared, to her earth ly career, befell on Friday night Miss Bessie Young, daughter of Ezra P. Young, Esq., of Sewickley. She isnowlyingon what may be her deathbed as the fearful result of treading upon a match. All the Talley isplunped in mourning, and truly it can be raid of the heart-stricken parents that they have not been left to grieve alone, for a bond of sympathy has united the entire suburb in one common grieving watch round the sufferer's bedside. In Sewickley she is spoken of as one of its sweetest young girls. Another winter would have brought, if not her formal debut, at least what is equally dear to the school girl's heart, the permission to entertain and be entertained with the school girls and boys' charming holiday dances and parties. A school career of certain brilliancy at the Pennsylvania College received a fitting acknowledgment last year In a gold medal won for superior work in her lavonte study ot painting, for which she showed a most marked ability. Hand in hand with this was a decided taste for literature, which home Influences carefully fostered and cult I rated, and adorning these gifts of mind were those of the heart, which so impress all who know her with a sense of personal affliction In the suffering that has come to their young friend. Tbe family of Mr. Charles B. Speer, of Craft avenue, Oakland, has gone to Bedford Springs for a sojourn of three weeks. Mr. H. Kirk Porter, who sailed with his family some months ago ior Europe, has been In Pittsbnrg during the past week. As Mr. Porter's intention when he went away was to visit the continent at some length, this appearance in town is doubtless to be ot short duration. 2? one of the ladies of his family are with him. Yesterday Senator "William JTlinn joined his family at Bedford Springs. I have just bees debating with myself the feasibility of a school street car. There are school ships for naval cadets, depart ments at college for the training of would be journalists, and then why not a car in which night be trained the voung gentle man whoe ambition is hounded by a con ductor's horizon. The new departure need not be run at anyone's expense except that ot the indulgent public who would probably be willing to pay a double tare for the pleasure of observing the inculcation of some good oommon sense rules as well as those of politeness. Think irhat-s-siiveMt would be to the feelings of those who have just seen their dearest friend drive by, behind a spanking team, to have a gentle-voiced conductor, hit in hand, awaiting their leisure and their tare. Street cars have made lite almost not worth the living, and conductors acgravated it into a state when it is lit for nothing save dying. Fancy what a godsend would be a man who knew the streets along his line, or, barring that, would let you off at the strret if you knew it yourself without yonr mak ing preparations half an hour beforehand to attract his attention! Then there are the conductors who have a precocious fancy that their passengers are Saratoga trunes to which heels first or head first makes no practical difference in their internal sys tems. Seriously speaking, there is a vast reform needed, especially on one line, which need not be specified, because every street car rider knows. I saw a conductor yesterday afternoon treat a woman entering his car with a baby in her arms in a most ill-natured manner. Hetonkher open umbrella, as she stepped up, and his evident reluc tance to cive her even that slight assitance proved that he only did so at her request, and as she steadied herself in the doorway, shoved the umbrella, now closed down in lront of her. The woman didn't see the umbrella, but the conductor dropped it nevertheless, and only for the timely assist ance of a passenger the unfortunate woman wouid have been flung on her face, with doubtless serious resultant injuries to herstlf and tier child. The cause ot it all stood back on the platform with his arms folded and a soft whistle of contentment issuing from his lips. The woman sat the entire way in with a flush of anger on her cheek, nnd indeed she would have been justified in reprimanding the conductor most severely for his inhuman conduct Only last week a similiar complaint was made in The Dispatch concerning this same man. There are a great many thoughtful and gentlemanly fellows in the street car service in whose cars it is a pleasure to ride. Sirs. Schenley, of London and Pittsburg is to be immortalized in stone. The grate lul daughters of the Involution have got up a gentle agitation for a statue of Pittsburg's benefactors, to be erected in the park, and for which the purse strings of the daughters are to be liberally loosened. Tne idea is a very good one, and in view of Mrs. Schen ley s probable gift of the blockhouse, would really seem not only to be a graceful re cognition of a broad minded and liberal woman, but an honorable attempt to balance an account. Mrs. Edward Bosworth, of Hudson, O., with a blue eyed, golden haired fairy of a little 4-year-old danzhter, is a guest in the city ot her sister-in-law, Mrs. M. M. Bos worth, of Denniston avenue, East End. Maeiou Crawford Gallahhb. THE SOCIAL WHIRLIGIG. It Spins Almost as hast In the Month ot Aucut a In Durrmbrr. Musical recita tions and other amusements followed dinner until a late hour. The birthday of Misses Berta and Lotta, twin daughters of Mr. and Mrs. A.
