KOW IS THE TIME TO CALL A HALT.
An Allegheny Clergyman Takes
Ground igainst Tiolence.
Strong
TOPICS CHOSEN LT CITY PASTOES
Itev. S. TV. Davis, nastor of the Walton
Methodist Episcopal Church, Southside,
preached on "Confession" yesterday morn
ing. He said: "The eyes of the world are
on Christ. Some confess, others deny Him,
Bod with what result the words of Christ
solemnly declare. Men cannot serve God
secretly. Some imagine they can confess
Christ by church membership and the ordi
nance of baptism. These are not sufficient.
Some also confess in the life, but the tongue
is silent.
"Our words are a very important part of
our life, as is aptly illustrated in the business
and political world. The Scriptures com
mand, 'Confess with thy mouth the Lord
Jesus.' So important is this that 'With the
heart man believes unto repentance, but
with the mouth confession is made.'
"Some deny Christ through fear of being
put out of the synagogue. Men have often
denied Christ on account of persecution.
We may do it in silence when Christ is de
famed. One would not hear another sneak
evil of a loved friend and be silent.
Would any one, speak reproach
fully of a good and devoted mother,
without resentment? Christ may also be
denied by shirking duty. Be faithful by
being decided, stand firm, banish fear,
withstand tests and seek the help of God."
In referring to the labor troubles he said:
"I have heretofore refrainedfrom speaking,
feeling sure my congregation did not need it,
and besides one is likely to be misquoted
and misunderstood. But the events of the
past few days are things which all right
minded people deplore. Xawlessness and
violence' and all expressions, as well as acts,
in this direction are to be refrained from
and condemned. The condition ot affairs
which made it necessary lor Governor Pat
tison to call out the military is a svl com
ment on our Christian civilization. The mob
rule that overturns the lawful and peaceable
methods of a well-planned organization for
the protection of the workingmen, is most
reprehensible; proves injurious to those it is
designed to benefit, and would be subver
sive of all civil government From such an
evil members ot all labor organizations, and
all good citizens, may well implore deliver
ance. "Back of all this, there is something we
would do well, as those who fear God, lay
deeply to heart. It is the prevalence of
tongodliness."
THE LOVE OF GOD.
Kev. n. C. Applrgartb. Tells of the Powers of
This Great Delng.
Eev. H. C Applegarth, Jr., of the Fourth
Avenue Baptist Church, last night directed
his remarks to the Almightiness of God.
"Over a billion and a half of people are
scattered over this globe," saidhe'aud God
reigns o ver al. The human family as a general
thing believe He rules and is provident to
all. The multitudes of all nations delight
to houor Him. Ko matter how small the
detail is, God is cognizant of our every
action.
"When the storms, miseries and bereave
ments of life overtake us, we look for some
one to quiet and give us rest.
That refuge is alnavs found
in God. The powers of this great Sovereign
are unlimited. With that same gentle
touch that He gives rest to the weary; He
v terns a torrent-in .iu course. God? gives
His whole heart to us. He is like a mother,
though she has 20 children she loves them
all with the same love. It is to our honor
to be subjects of so treat a being. The
statesmen, ministers to foreign lands and
men ot note are accorded the privilege of
writiug Honorable before their names. To
all of us is accorded the same privilege
through the honor of loving God."
AVOIDED THE SUBJECT.
Dr. Held Says the People's Thonshts Should
lie Turned From Labor Troubles.
When Dr. J. W. Eeid, of the First TJ. P.
Church, was asked yesterday afternoon if
he had referred to the attempted assassina
tion ot Mr. Frick in his sermon, he replied:
"So, and I don't intend to. The people
think too much about these labor troubles
during the neck. The time has come to
divert their thoughts to better things on the
Sabbath at least"
On the Sunday before the Fourth the
doctor preached a timely sermon in which
he stated that emplover and employe
should meet on a level honestly and settle
their disputes with reason, not the shot
run. He advocated rigid restriction of
immigration, and said the country now had
as much ot the foreign dangerous element
as it could handle.
THE MEETING LAGGED
Because the Speakers Who Were Expected
Failed to Appear.
The regular union services of eight East
End churches in Silver Lake Grove was
postponed last night to make way for a mass
meeting for a ratification of the action of
Congress on the Sunday closing of the
World's Fair.
The rain had a cooling effect on the at
' tendance, and Judge Mazee, Major Dennis
ton, Major Moreland and Bev. Dr. McClel
land, who were billed to speak, did not put
in an appearance. The speakers ot the
evening were Bev. Drs. Chalfant, Crafts
and Peter Dick. The spirit of the meeting
lagged, o ing to the non-appearance of the
principal speakers and some got up and left
before the meeting was over.
The regular union services will be held
as usual next Sunday evening in the grove.
TIME TO CALL A HALT,
The Red Hand of Anarchr Mast Not Inter
fere in Labor Disputes.
Eev. & "W. McCorkle, of Allegheny, in
Speaking of the attempted assassination of
the Chairman of the Carnegis Steel Com
pany, said: "It is now time to call a halt
"When the red hand of anarchy inter
feres with the disputes between labor
and capital and tries to take life,
then it is time for a more conservative
policy to be pursued. The Carnegie Steel
Company and Homestead workers should
now hold a conference and settled their
difficulties."

A YOUTHFUL BURGLAR.
She Didn't Take Anything Away, hat Broke
Into the House to Bars a Good Time
Solution ot a Mystery That Puzileel the
Police.
The owner of a residence on Highland
avenue left for Europe some time ago, add
closed up his house after removing all arti
cles ot value to a safe resting place. An
officer passing the house last Sunday de
tected signs which pointed plainly to
the fact that the house had
been broken into. He repaired to
the house of a relative of the owner nearby
to inform him of the fact When the officer
was announced to the head of the family he
was entertaining two or three friends in his
room with liquid refreshments, and his first
thought was that his speak-easy was being
raided. After being informed of the pur
pose of-the officer's visit, this fear was dis
pelled, and he and his friends accompanied
the officer to the scene of the supposed
burglary. Upon examination they found
the house turned upside down. Nearly all
the shutters were thrown open and
every drawer and cupboard in the
house had been 'sacked and the contents
strewn about the floor. The most surpris
ing feature, however, was that a small
bank which was filled with money, the only
thing of real value about the place, was
standing undisturbed on one of the mantle
pieces in full view. There was an air of
mystery about the place they could not
penetrate. However, they closed the house,
and everything was peaceful again.
A couple of days ago a neighbor called
upon the same gentleman early in the
morning to inform him that the house had
again been entered. He obtained the same
officer and again went to the house finding
it in exactly the same condition as before
with the bank still untouched. They were
very much perplexed and as the two sat
considering the matter, chostlv visions
began to arise before them. They were
interrupted in their reveries by a neighbor
who came in upon them and explained the
matter. A little girl five years old. who
lived next door, had been using the house
for a playroom. She and her companions
had twice succeeded in prying a window
open and once inside, their inquisitive
natures got the best of them; hence all this
disorder. Thus ended what might have
been a wonderful ghost story.
MONTANA GOrjJQ EEPUBLICAH.
Superintendent Young, of Helena, Says a
Good Word for Chairman Carter.
Dr. B. G. Young, Superintendent of the
Helena pnblic schools, is in the city. He
had been attending the annual meeting of
teachers at Saratoga, and stopped over here
to visit friends for a few days. JHe is an
ardent Republican, and is in line to be the
State Superintendent of Public Instruction
in Montana. He is personally acquainted
with Chairman Tom Carter and Senators
Sanders and Powers. Speaking of Carter
Prof. Young says he is a great hustler; in
his opinion one of the liveliest campaign
managers in the country. He expects to
see Carter handle the reins as well as
Senator Quay.
"I feel sure," he continued, "that Mon
tana will go Bepublican this fall The
People's party has recently organized in the
State, and it is difficult to say what they
will do, or what coalitions they may form.
Governor Pattison, of Pennsylvania, was
very popular in Montana, and if he had
Deen nominated it is generally conceded
that he would have carried the State."
A year ago Chauncey F. Black and Sena
tor Faulkner organized a number of Demo
cratic clubs in Montana and throughout the
far 2f orthwest Black was very enthusiastic
and predicted that as a result of his work
many of these States would be found in the
Democratic column. So far he has failed to
materialize as a prophet Montana covers
a great area. The State is 800 miles long,
and Dr. Young says some of the counties
have 30,000 square miles of territory. The
doctor emigrated from'Iowa three years ago,
and has become greatly attached to his
mountainous country.

Firemen Dave a'Hard Time Eattling With
Hickory Smoke.
WOKEING THE FIRE WITH EELATS
Shortly after 3 o'clock yesterday after
noon fire'was discovered in the smoke house
attached to the pork packing establishment
of J. Stevenson & Co., 637 Liberty street
An alarm was turned in from box 17, but by
the time the firemen arrived dense volumes
of smoke were pouring from the windows
and other outlets: The smoke was from
hickory wood piled in the smoke
house and is of so heavy a character that it
is very difficult to withstand its effects.
The firemen braved this nauseating cloud,
but the men could stay in the building no
langer than ten minutes at a time, and then
would have to come out and vomit Chief
Steele wortcd the fire with relays of men,
and in this way crews were kept at work
all the time. The blaze was confinel to the
smoke house, and in a short time xu ex
tinguished. The members of the firmwere present,
but none of them had any idea as to the
origin of the fire. They stated that the
smoke House was filled with meat, all of
which would be destroyed. The loss was
placed at $5,000, which was fully covered by
insurance, placed in different companies.
Three alarms were sent in for 'the fire, prin
cipally to get the use of the meu.
At 11:30 yesterday morning there was a
fire in the same building and in the very
same spot This blaze was a very small
one and was extinguished without difficulty.
Chief Steele at that time made a thorough
search of the premises and was satisfied
that there was no more fire in the building. .
It is thought that some embers were over
looked and this caused the second fire.

From the Rev. K T. Grange. Pittsburg. Fa.:
I take pleasure th saying a word or two In cor
dial recommendation of I rlnity Hall. As one of
lta patrons for the past three years. I hare been
deeplv Interested, of conrse. I have seen the
school life and have looked Into the course of study
and tho methods of teaching. All these are very
sitls factory. I hare seen too. that the care Is
kindly, the food excellent, and the discipline ad
ministered with rare good sense and judgment.
Trinity Hall, to my mind. Is the most 'home -like'
of any school I ever saw.
