THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH. TUESDAY, JULY 19, - 1891' 8. THE MAYOR WAS MAD 3Yhen He Heard His Some Had Been Used Without Authority. SUBPBISED HI A COUNCILMAN, flho Said He Toted for the Purchase of II ore Parks Because CIS HOHOR WAS SAID TO FA70E IT Mayor Gourley received some informa tion from a member of Councils yesterday whtcb excited hii wrath considerably and will probably cause him to make a little in vestigation. The member in question called on His Honor to learn what action he pro posed to take on the resolutions passed by Councils at their last meeting contracting to buy from William Flinn, John Fite and Charles Lockhart property to the value of $250,000 as an addition to Highland Park. The Mayor refused to tell his visitor, as he has frequently done with reporters who have quizzed him on the subject, what his intentions were relative to the resolutions. "That is a question I decline to discuss with anybody, "continued the Mayor, "until I have satisfied myself what I shall da If you wish to advance an argument either for or against the resolutions I am ready and willing to listen to you, but I wont promise to indicate what effect vour arguments mav have." Two Gentlemen Serlonsly Surprised. "Well, of course yon are in favor of buy ing the land?" queried the councilman, whose name, by the way, the Mayor would not divulge. "I have not said so," answered His Honor. "You have never said so?" "Certainly not." "You don't mean to say that before the resolutions were presented to Councils that you were not in favor of them," said the councilman in evident astonishment. "I do mean to say that, and very clearly, too," answered the Mayor. "But why do you ask such a question?" "Well, I was fooled, Mayor, and I don't mind telling you," was the reply. "I was opposed to buying any more land for High land .Park, but I was told that you had in vestigated the matter and were heartily in favor of the proposed purchases. I knew it would be all right or you would not favor the resolutions, so took it for granted and voted in favor of them. I know there were others who did likewise for the same rea son." Bis Honor Will Investigate. It was now the Mayor's turn to be aston ished. As soon as he grasped the situation he boiled over with indignation and de manded to know who had dared to use his name in such a free manner without bis con sent. The Conncilman declined to give any names, but said that if the Mayor really desired to get them it would be an easy matter. Later when seen by a reporter the Mayor's wrath had cooled down somewhat, but he was still indignant over what he termed the illegitimate use of his name. "I never in dicated by a word or deed to anyone," said he, "before those resolntions went into Councils, that I was in favor of the addi tions to Highland Park or the resolutions, and no one on earth had any right to say I favored them. I have practically made up my mind as to what I will do with the reso lutions, and by the next meeting of Coun cils my action will be made pnblic This matter will have no effect on mj decision, but I don't think I will all allow it to stop without investigation." The Mayor refused to indicate what his action would be on the resolutions, but it is generally expected about City Hall that he will veto them. Owing to the Homestead trouble and the talk about returning the Cfaueie library money Councils will hardly xn&t i-gain until September. ! CH A?- ' KICKIHQ FOE HEW FTJENITTJSE. The Board of Assessors Want the Same Comforts as Other City Officers. The offices of the City Aisessors are un dergoing the process of cleaning and are temporarily closed, to the great inconveni ence of people having business there. The offices have not been furnished for nearly eight years, and most of ths furniture has been in daily use more than 20 years. The assessors think it is about time" they were cetting some new carpets and furniture, and argue that inasmuch as nearly every other office in the building has been furnished elegantly within the past few years, theirs being one of the most important should at least be comfortably fixed up. Chief As sessor Case made a demand on Chief Bige low yesterday for new furniture, but re ceived little satisfaction in consequence of which the assessors are in a state ot indig nation. Keeping Up tbe FIslit. Frank Pucher, editor of the Polish paper Jednota, was arrested yesterday on six charges of libel preferred by August Pleichter, Joseph Bonshis, William Kohun, Joseph Stibo, John Miller and John Honey. The plaintifis allege that the defendant made vigorous attacks on them through his paper, injuring their character. Pucher was held lor a hearing Saturday. Bay Chicago Real Estate. Chicago real estate almost sells itself, and does its own talking. A syndicate of wealthy, representative men own Sheldon Heights, the highest, driest and best resi dence property in Chicago. They want one first-class real estate man (only)to represent them in this town and vicinity. Don't "putter" along with little things in boom towns handle something you can turn easily. Location, price, terms are all at tractive and right Chicago is getting one new permanent inhabitant every nine min utes. This makes a lively demand for good residence property. A live, progressive man, with a following, can learn of a busi ness opening ot a very profitable nature by writing to-day to James E. & Robert L, McElroy, Chamber of Commerce, Chicago, provided the name of this paper is men tioned. Tnlce Good Cars of the Children. If vou have children you will be inter ested in the experience of Mr. John Cook, of Pilot, "Verrmlion county, 111. He says: Two years ago two of my family, a young man and a girl, had very severe and danger ous attacks of bloody flux. The doctor here was unable, after a week's time, to check or relieve either case. I threw the doctor overboard and began using Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy. Im provement was seen very soon and rur chil dren arose in a few days from what I feared would be their death-bed. It is a grand, good medicine." Tuwrhsu xcorslon Via the Pictoresqne B. & O. It. R.
