THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH. WEDNESDAY, JULY 13, 1892L
tGETTlNGTHE FACTS,
Testimony at the Inquest on
the Homestead Yictims
Begun Yesterday.
THE WOBKERS FIRED FIRST
AH the Boatmen Were Ignorant of
the Object of the Trip.
DESCRIPTION OP THE LANDING.
Captain Hines of the Finkerton Force the
First Man to Fall.
; THE IDENTIFICATION OF THE YICTIMS
At 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon Coroner
McDowell began an inquest relative to tho
deaths of the men engaged in the Home
stead riot, "Wednesday, July 6. There were
very few persons in the Coroner's office
other than the witnesses, and not the slight
est interest appeared to be manifested in the
proceedings.
Captain William B. Bodgers, of the Little
Bill steamboat, was the first witness. He
testified that be was employed to transport,
for the chairman of the Carnegie Company,
Pinkerton detectives to protect and
guard the works of the company at Home
stead. The guards, he said, were trans
ferred to his barges at Davis Island Dam
between 10 and 11 o'clock on the evening of
July 5 and the boals then proceeded up the
river. "When within two miles of Home
stead the witness heard many whistles
blowing, it being then about break ot day.
An attempt was made to make a landing just
above the Pemicky bridge when the attack
on the barges was begun.
Says the Workers Fired First.
The witness said the crowd on the shore
opened fir efirst, and Captain Hines, of the
detective force was the first to falL The
witness testified that on the barge before
the landing was made he heard Deputy
Sheriff: Gray tell Captain limes not to
(hoot until it became necessary in self-defense
that bloodshed must be avoided.
The witness did not see any cannon, but
thought one was in use from the sound.
He knew McCurry, and when the detectives
were fired upon the boat took the wo unded
back to Port Perry.
Dr. S. M. Binehart, of the Homeopathic
Hospital, testified that Detective J. AY.
Klein bad not been conscious at any time
after he was brought to the hospital, and
that be dlel from the effect ol gunshot
wounds.
Captain John Kennedy, employed .is a
watchman on the barges, 'testified that the
boats transported the detectives, and cor
roborated the statement of Captain Bodgers.
In addition he stated that none of the em
ployes on the boat were informed as to
where they were going or for what
purpose the detectives were placed
on the barges until they were near Home
stead, and the detectives were then told not
to shoot until it became necessary. The
witness did not see any white flag "run up
from the bargee.
Unanimous Testimony at to the First Shot.
Captain G K. "Wisbart, pilot of the Lit
tle Bill, and Zach Evans, engineer, gave
similar testimony, as did also Morris Bodg
ers, second engineer, E'iward "Wheeler,
deck hand, and John T. Case, mate, all of
the Little Bill. All of these witnesses
rlaimed that the men on shore fired first
They testified that Captain Hines cautioned
his men against using firearms until it be
came imperative.
Joseph G. Hoffman, a Pinkcrton detective
of Chicago, was the last witness called. He
described, as did the previous witness, the
trip to Homestead. Captain Hines, he
said, had charge of the men. As the barges
approached the works the witness saw large
numbers of people gathered along the river
banks, many of whom were women.' As
the barges got nearer to the place of
the intended landing they were fired
upon. Captain Hines and seven
or eight men attempted to put out the gang
plank on the shore above the bridge, but
were unable to do so on acconnt of the
shower of stones and actions of the strikers.
After a short time an effort was again made
and resulted in the placing of the gang
plank. As the men were starting down
the plank the strikers fired and the witness
fell, having been shot through the right leg
above the knee.
Wns Unarmed When He Fell.
He said he did not have a weapon with
liia when be was shot. He said the de
tectives were given to understand that their
duty was to guard the company's property,
and tbat they were instructed not to fire
unless in self-defense.
The affidavit of John F. McCurry, who is
t the Allegheny General Hospital, vas
read to the jury and the inquest was con
tinued until July 26, at 2 o'clock P. M.

TIE GREAT PIANO INDUSTRY.
Thousands and Thousands Made in
America Eyery Year.
The Output Increasing nt the Bate of 25 Per

and Checkering D on't Cnt So Much of a
Figaro In the Market as They Once Did
Many O.lier Manufactured at .the
Present Day Fnlly Their Eqaal Where
and by Whom They Are Muds.
One ot the greatest of American Indus
tries, If not trnly the greatest, Is the manu
facture or pianos in tho United States. The
Amorican piano Is the acknowledged piano
of the world and has not even the approach
of an equal. For 23 years few, if any, foreign
pianos have teaohed onr shores, while thou
sands of American pianos are being export
ed annually, no less than 10,000 of these find
ing foreign homes last year. There are be
tween 73 and 80 expensively equipped piano
faetories in the United States, turning out
each from 300 to 5,000 pianos a J ear,
or a total of 133,003 pianos annually.
There are some seven of these makes
known as the old standard or
national repntationed pianos, eaoli of
which has taken first premtum at some
woild's fair over all competition, thereby
J ustly laying claim to a national reputation.
Tho oldest 6r these Is perhaps "Chlckering
& Sons," which at one time, held sway pre
eminently. Knabo" 1' the next oldest in
lino of the seven standard or national
pianos, and later came In the "Stelnwav" to
share honors with Chiokering and Knabo,
and at about the same .time the "Ballet &
Davis" pianos came in view, claiming public
notice, and walked off with first honors and
a national reputation. Soon after "Decker
Brothers" also became celebrated as a na
tional piano, and then later the "Steak" put
in its claim for highest honors, and upon
crossing sn ords, captured first prize, and at
about tho time of the Centennial "Weber"
camo to the front, demanding and obtained
notice by crossing swords with tho other six
leadcis. So thero were seven called
standard or national American pianos,
and recognized as such thronghout the
wot Id, and are Stein way, Cliicketing, Knabe,
"Ballet 4 Dnvi," Decker Brother, Weber
and Steck. Since that tirneCtlie Centennial),
and up to which time square pianos had
mainly been in use, the piano trade has
taken on a new Impetus and thousands ot
new and valuable improvements have been
combined to produce the best lesultg.
Millions of capital have been Invested In
new factories, new machinery and new
Improvements until tho piano has ap
peared In a new and different form, the
"Upright," more beautiful to the eve,
more pleasant to tile ear, with its more
satisfying repeating action, tone and touch,
occupying but half its original space, and so
on, each manufacturer vioing with
the others, and tbat other making
wondertul strides to keep the lead till,
in tliclr present state of perfection and
beauty, it Is hard to tell who makes the best
piano to-day, nnd i hether or not all or even
any of the seven old standard makes can
boast of superiority over many of the other
20 or mote line piano makers of the present
day. It is settled beyond a controversy.
however, that there are other American
manufacturers turning out and selling more
finished pianos dally at the present time
than either of the seven national concerns,
known as the old "standard" makers, among
which might be mentioned tho "Sohmer," of
New York, a fine piano, and tho manufac
turers of which aro turning out from 75 to 80
a week; also the "Henry F. Miller," of Bos
ton, is a good piano, nnd manufactured in
lnnre numbers; and the "Hazleton Broth
ers," of Hew York, make an excellent
piano, also manufactured in largo numbers.
Tho "Emerson Piano Company," of Boston,
ate now turning out between SO and 90 pianos
a week, and an excellent ai tide. "Kranlch
& Barh," one of the latter concerns, manu
facture about 50 pianos a week, and claim it
as strictly first class.
The llardman Piano Company, of New
York, are manufacturing over 75 pianos per
week, nnd are a inter addition to the long
linn of first-class American pianos and are
hUhly indorsed. J. 4 a Fischer, or New
York, the second largest manufacturers of
pianos in tho United States, turn out SO to
100 a week and are said to be or good quality,
and one of the reliable American makes.
The W. W. Kimball Company, of Chicago,
who for years past have been recognized as
tne most extensive wnoiesaie piano ana or
gan dealers In the United States, and who
have for tho past ten years manufactured
reed organs at the rate or SO a day, or 15,000
organs annually, began three years
ago the manufacture of pianos and are
recognized to-day as the most ex
tensive piano manufacturers on the conti
nent, and who turn out 20 finished pianos
dally, or ISO a week. Their combined piano
and organ factories cover seven acres of
ground, nnd from which Is turned out 21,000
instruments annually. The Kimball piano
is a "high grade" instrument, spiinging at
once into popular favor, and is considered
the equal, nnd by many the superior of any
piano now before the public. Prominent
among Its many friends who share this be
lief, and who use and indorse tho Kimball
piano may be mentioned: Adelina Patti,
"Tho Queen of Song;" Big. Francisco Ta
magnn, the king of tenors; Mmo. Albanl, the
great prima donna: Giuseppe Del I'uente.the
eminent baritone: Lillian l ordlca, the Amer
ican prima donna; Lilli Lehmann, Max
Alvary; Julius Perotta; Emil Fischer, the
great basso; Sig. Lulgl Arditl, the famous
orchestra leader; Hans Balatka, the veteran
composer, teacher and conductor; Minnie
Ilauk, the great American prima donna who
created Carmen; Enill Liebling, the cele
brated composer and concert pianist;
Charles KunkeL pianist composer and music
publisher; P. S. Gllmure, the world's famous
orcnesira leader, uesiaesnunareasorotliers.
dealers, musicians and exports. Mho believe
the "Kimball" is the coming great piano of
tlioage, and maiks an epoch in the history
of American piano building. Besides the
great Kimball factory at Chicago there are
several other large concerns in that city
turning out from 25 o 40 pianos a week, so
that the East, Boston and New York.no
longer holds the key to the piano trade, but
must eventually bow to Chicago In piano
construction, as it has in organ building,
three-fourths of the world's supply of which
now comes from Chicago.
