FAST TEAIN DERAILED.
The-thicaso Limited Jumps From
"the Tracks at Glenfield,
RUNNING 60 MILES AN HOUK.
Miraculous "Escape of All on Board, Kot One
Eeing Injured
CHARGED TO FAULTY SWITCH-SETTING
An the New Tort and Chicago limited
vu nearing Pittsburg yesterday morning it
left the track at Glenfield, and the whole
train was derailed. Although the train
was running at Tery high ipeeil, nearly 60
miles an hour, and every car hut one left
the track, nobody -was hurt and compara
tively little damage was done to the rolling
atock, though the track was badly cut up.
The accident has not been fully accounted
for yet, but the known facts appear to be
as follows: The limited ras running about
ou time and making Tery high speed, close
"to 60 miles an hour, when it rushed through
Glenfield station at a little before 7 o'clock
yesterday morning. As the locomotive
cleared the station it jumped the traek'ahd
dragged with it all of the five cars of the
train but the last.
Supposed Faulty ctllnc or Hie Switch.
At the point where the accident occurred
1the two tracks spread out into three, and
4 the east-bound passenger trains commonly
fuse the center track, the outer east-bound
I track being devoted to freight traffic. The
I center track is entered Irom the west by a
switch, and it is supposed that faulty set-
' tiDg of this switch caused the accident. It
' is understood, though not with absolute cer-
iaintv, that the operator in the signal tower
f at Glenfield discovered when he heard
the limited approaching that the switch
had not been set to divert tho
train iiito the center track, and tried to reo-
tifv the mistake It is concluded that he
did not complete the operation properlv,
or that at all events the switch did not close
properly, leaving the point or the switch in
such a pusitinn that the flange oi the loco
motive's wheel; struck it, and the shock,
combined with the high speed at
which the train was going, threw the big
engine off the track.
The engineer, it is said, saw that the
switch was out of place before he reached
it, and was thus able to prepare for the acci
dent though he could not abate the train's
speed to any great extent.
The uonoer is that the train did not suf
fer more. All the cars left the track except
the observation car, which was the last, but
there was no telescoping or toppling over,
the locomotive was little damaged, the
combination smoker and baggage ca"r next
to it sufle'red more than the restj while the
sleeper following was dragged for half its
length oft its trucks.
ota Man on BoRrU Injured.
Uelther engineer nor fireman was hurt, and
the SO odd passengers in tho train got
nothing worse than an awlul fright and a
good shaking. The engine and cars bumped
over the ties for a few hundred feet and
stopped right side up. The passengers,
most of whom were dressed, or dresslug
scrambled out of the cars and thanked their
stars it was no worse. A train made Up
in Pittsburg, which was soon sent out,
enabled the limited's passengers to con
tinue their journey.
Fortunately the wreck did not blockade
the west-bound track, although both the
eastern tracks were put out of service till
last night, and the traffic Of the road was
conducted with some incidental delays over
a single, track between Glenfield and Se
wickley. Railroad men noticed that the
Cavalier, boudoir car, was once more in
trouble. It was a part of the limited when
that train was wrecked at East Palestine.
Superintendent A. Jl Starr spent his Sun
day al the scene ot the wreck, and will con
duct an inquirv into the cause of the accU,
dent to-day. 7,
FLINT GLASS CONVENTION.
The Local Delegates llave Start-d to Corn
lnc; No Opposition Developed to Presl
lenffcmlth, and Secretary Dillon Few
Cb6Cea'to- Be Made in the Scale.
Tbe annual convention of the Flint Glass
'Workers' Association will be held at Corn
ing, K. Y., this week. It is a non-union
town, and no preparations have been made
to receive the delegates, but tbe men think
they bae a chance to show their strength
and win over the Corning people. A'big
onion strike is in progress in the town, and
the flint workers hope to be able to help
their fellows in the struggle.
Over 250 delegates and visitors have gone
to Corning over the Allegheny Valley road
from Pittburg. About 50 left last even
ing. In the party were President Vf. J.
Smith, Secretary W. J. Dillon, Thomas
Smart, Alton; George M. Murphy, Pitts
burg; William Fitzpatrick, Findloy; Daniel
Dully, Philadelphia; H. L-Smitb, Brook
lyn, ami John Howard, District Attorney
Irom "Wheeling. Mr. Howard is an ex
flint glass worker, and will deliver an ora
tion at the graves ot the 20 Corning men
who were killed last year in the Bavenna
wreck. The association intended
to dedicate a monument at this
meetiog, but owing to the strike of the
granite cutters the Brooklyn firm was un
able to complete it in time.' The exercises
will be held anyhow, and the monument will
be jmveiled later.
No opposition has developed so far to
President Smith and Secretary Dillon, It
is; generally .conceded that both will be re
elected. The most important work of the
convention is the preparation of the scale of
wages. Mr. Smith says, with a few minor
changes, the scale ot last Tear will be
adopted. He doesn't anticipate any strikes,
and believes that the manufacturers will
sign it without much parley. The affairs oi
the association are in good shape and the
best of feeling prevails.
