XevYobk, July 1. Special telegrams
to Jlradstred's from the more important dis
tributins centers indicate clearly that mid
summer dullness is at hand.
The more encouraiinjj advices are from
St. Paul, Omaha, Kansas City and St
Louis. The first reports some gains in
movement of goods in all staple lines.
Kansas City announces that its June vol
ume of trade is in eicess of that for 1SU1,
with cattle and hojs actiyeand wheat and
corn prospects excellent, and from St Louis
word comes of the gradual improvement in
general trade, with excellent cron pros
pects vhich stimulate business now and
point to a good 'all trade.
At 15o-.tn manufacturers of boots and
shoes aie busy, with sole leather higher and
advancing, but lumber East is w eat. Print
mills are crowded with orders at pood
prices. Baltimore meichants expect a bet
ter business in the autumn, as they have
been purchasing stocks with conservatism.
Philadelphia dryKOod" dealers are only fill
ing supplementary oraers.
Loss by Floods on the Mississippi.
Xew Orleans reports that continued hih
water has greatly retarded business through
out Louisiana, while Galveston says Texas
trade in staples is only lair, that other line
are quiet, but that prospects for autumn are
good.
JJemphis, Cincinnati, Pittsburg and San
Francisco all repoit ircneinl trade quiet and
unchanged. E en at Chicago w holcale ob
beis in several lines are onlv placing cu
toinarr orders, when given tuo pmileao or
cancelling them.
A holiday feeling poseses the specula
tive share mat ket, the pi ovalcnt inactivity
being intensified by the absence of foreign
participation due to uohtical excitement le
paiding the general elections in Great Brit
ain. Honored gold shipments, $3,353,000 hav
ing ueen tent to j.uropo ana Canaan, navo
produced little impression uron cither tho
n:one maiKet or Mock speculation, though
limited beat 11 pressure lias been displayed
on reports of tui ther storms and damage to
Clops at the West
Tile July 1 dibuienients have produced
little improion upon either the money mar
ket or r-tock speculation, though limited
bearish pressure has been displayed on re
ports of lurther storms and damage to crops
at the West The July 1 disbursements have
produced little commotion in the Xew Tort
Join market, the temporary curtailment oi
the supply oi funds being too slight to affect
mtes. Exchange is firm on tho scarcity of
commercial bills.
Ihifatenrd Irun Troubles Staved Off.
Pig iron is as badly offas ever, with prices
for toaio grades lower than heretofore be
rate of further competition from Southern
grades hast and West Best grades of Le
high iron arc eiiiected to sell a9 low as $15 in
the near future, SI under current rates. Xo
improvement in demand or prices has fol
io wed the decicased production of stocks
rcpoited for -.evei-al mouths past So many
prominent iron manufacturers havo signed
a modilicd sc tie of wases that aftei the
customary fortnight's shutdown at the West
lor repair, it seems quite likel) tho impend
ing conflict between iron mannractuiers
and tho Amalgamated Association will havo
practically disappeared.
Bank clcarinzs for June aisregate $1,S5S,
IXW.O'jU, compared with $4,312,000,000 in June,
1-91, a gain of K per cent. For six mouths,
total hank clearings at 00 odd cities amount
to $30,713 000, or 15 per cent more than In six
months ot ISM, and 2.8 per cent more than in
n line portiou of IKK). This is in spite of an
-oxiiratc reduction of June bank clear
at New York City due to Stock Ex-
rure clearing House operations of about
riuz. uuu "UU.
E spoils of wheat, including flour as
viieit, irozn the United States seaports, hoth
coas, for the week euding JuneSO equal
8.21G.0U0 bushels, 1,000,000 bushels more than
in tlulliLe week one jear ago, and 2,000,000
bu-hels more than in like weeks in 1S90. ISSa
and IS
The increase over the total for last week
is 800,000 bushels. The total quantitv of
wheat and flour exported in Juno was about
li,7')0,00J bushels. This points to total ex
ports of w'lieat. Including flour as wheat, of
21T,000,OOa bushels during the past 12 months,
as compaied with 106,000.000 bushels in the
cereal year cndln June 30, 1S3L
llie Fall ores for Six Months.
There have been 5,351 business failures in
the United states within six months, 6SG
fewer than in the first half of 13D1, a decrease
ol 11 per cent. Contrasted with six months
of lb90, the decrease is only 115, or 2 per cent.
Aggregate liabilities Jell away to $56,533,000
this year, or 33 per cent less than in the first
half of 1391, and 10 per cent lrs than in a
like poitionoi 1SW). Fiom this it is seen
that a. larger pioportionof the lailuies this
jcaraieoi smaller concerns thnn in 1S31 or
ISSj. Ihi'ie weieonly three more failures
-with S 100,0 jO liabilities each in the past six
months than in ISM, but aggregate liabilities
of this class oi embarrassments in 1K)2 are
5pei cent smallci than in 1830, and Ci per
cent smaller than in 2S9L
Dij'gnoas at first and second hands are
les- acme. Piint cloths are film and active
at late advances. Xew prints ill be offered
next wesK. Woolen goods are weaker in
somelinof. Camet makers are well sup
plied with orders.
Baw wool is more active at advances, with
n tendency, in case the quality of new clip is
high, to higher prices. Prices abioad are
iclatively higher than here. Kaw cotton is
l-16c lowei on a restricted market, due to
leurs of favorable action by the Senate on
the anti-options bilL
Unit's Keiirw of a KrmarUable Season.
R. G. Dun & Co.'s weekly review says: A
fiscal j eai never matched In the whole his
tory oi the countiy, in the volume of in
dustrial production. In magnitude of do
mestic exchanges or in foreign trade, has
justclosed. The imports tor the year havo
been about s-v,000.00j, the Increase in New
Yotk in June mci last year being about 18
percent, txports :rom :xew lork m June
gained 15 4 per cent and the aggregate lor
the j ear has been about $1,0-27,000,100.
Ilailroad earnings have been the largest in
an j ear thus fat, and clearings in June the
latgest ever known m that month, exceed
ing last j ear 8 per cent, and lor the wholo
vearjhe largest eer known outside New
Yoik. Failures or the half year bae been
5,503. again-1 6 074 in 1--91. and liabilities $62 -000,000
a.ninst $P2 00J.O00. and on tho whole
about the smallest tor live jeais. In spite
of low prices, additional works are going
into operation, e en in iron manufacture
and yet mote in woolen and cotton. More
over, the crops of tills year promise to be
very satisfactory, and the new half year
begins with excellent prospects.
