I THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH. THURSDAY, JUNE 16, 189a 11 LITE STOCK BKYIEW. Buns of Cattle at Local Yards Lighter Than Last Week. PBICE OF GOOD BEEVES ADVANCED. Kot Enough Light Trime Butcher Cattle to Go Around. SWINE HIGHER AND SHEEP STEADY Office of The Dispatch, Pittsburg, Wepxesdav, June 15. s There have been on sale this week at the East Liberty yards about 58 loads of cattle, against 65 loads last week. Fire loads of this week's offerings were held' over from last week. The principal source of supply was Chicago. Fully two-thirds of all the beeves oSered in our local markets of late came from Chicago. "With the exception ol one load of Allegheny county cattle, there were no heavy prir on the market. This one load, which averaged 1,500 pounds, was held at M 75 per cwt, but they were sold at a shade below this figure. Light tidy butcher beeves, weighing from 1,100 to 1,200 pounds, were scarce, and sold at an advance of 15e per cwt on prices of a week ago. The highest price paid this week was f4 70. Fresh cows were not in as large supply this week as last, and the quality of those on sale was low. Very few sales were re ported above $36 per head. Veal calves were In fair supply and a shade higher, with $5 SO as tne top. .There were not above 83 carloads or boss on sale this week at Liberty against 55 loads last week. As a result of the reduced re ceipts, markets have been active and firm at an advance of 20c per cwt. A few tops were sold as high as $5 25, whereas the highest price a week ago was $5 00 per cwt. Good sheep were scarce and firm at last week's prices, but common and low erades were dull and slow. Top price of sl-eep was $5 40; yearlings, $6 00, and spring lambs $6 50. A Lire Stock Firm's Review. Following; is report of the week's transac tions by William Holmes A Co.: We report 55 loads of cattlo on sale ilonday, against 60 loads on Monday of last week. Thirty loads were from Chicago and the balance from Ohio, Indiana and Pennsyl vania. There were two loads of slop-fed steers ana two loads of slop bulls fed In Pennsylvania, which sold about same as grain led of same weights. The trade opened . w ith a better feeling at 10c to 15c advance on lmndy lat butchering cattlo, which were in demand and very scarce. Coarse fat and gicen half-iatted cattle weie dull sale at about last week's prices. Buyers are now beginning to appreciate good grain-fed stock, and we will soon have to make a much wider spread of prices, as we feel quite sure good grain fed will go higher in the near lutttre, while half fatted slippery beeves will go lower. We quote prirre 1,100 to 1,500 at $4 5004 70; good. 1,200 to 1,300, $4 10 & 50; good l,0u0to 1.100, H 004 25: leeden. 5)00 to LOO0, $3 403 75: stockeis, 600 to 900, $2 503 25; cons and bulls. $2 003 25; fresh co and springers, $20 0045 00 per head. Receipts of hogs were lair on Monday, which, with a good demand here and higher prices West; sold about 10c higher than the close of last week. Since Monday receipts have been light and everything bold onai rival at steady prices to 5c higher this morn ing, closing nrm. e quote select tops at J5 20S5 25: good mixed, $5 155 20; best York ers f3 15; common to fair Yorkers and pics. $4 So5 00. Sheep were In fair supply on Mbndav. The quality was common and markets were dull at a shade lower prices, while good fat sheep were scarce and sold readily at about last week's prices. In our Judgment good fat sheep will continue to sell lor good prices all season. We look for low prices on common grades. Since Monday receipts have been light, and, as the quality has been poor, they had to be closed out at a shade below Monday's prices. CHICAGO Black news from Russia as to crops lifted wheat over a oent here to-day from an early break attributed in part to ap prehension or the Hatch anti-option bill be ing likely to pas the Senate. Corn flew up with wheat, and provisions were again strong. Wheat at the opening was KJic Per bushel lower than yesterday's closing, but rallied, with prices advancing lc; again eased off, prices fluctuating several times within a small range, and finally closed -o loner than yesterday. There were reports of harvesting in some sections of Kansas, In Oklahoma, and to commence next week in California. At the decline there was a sharp demand, shorts commencing to covor. Then came a cablegram, claimed to be offi cial, which stated that the crop in Russia was worse than the crop of 1891. There were also reports of damage to the crop here by hot winds. The poor quality of the late arrlvnls of corn had a bullish effect, and the fact that the cash market holds up well was also used to keep the price in the speculative market. Room traders were operating on the long side of the market, and this had a sustain ing influence. Initial trade were at Jc de cline on fine weather, but on buying by prominent commission bouses and covering by shorts the market advanced lKglJgC, de clining later X5sc n expectations of liberal receipts. Colupaied with last night, final prices shows a net gain of Jc Oats opened weak at Jc under vesterday's figures, but ruled firmer with "wheat and corn later in the session, and closed from ic to c higher. Elevator men disposed of lair quantities early. The provision market started verv weak in sympathy with the break at the opening of wheat and corn, but the moment those markets gave Indications of ad vancing, hog products quickly became strong. The close was close to top prices, and compared with lat night is 7jc up for pork, 5e for lard and 10c for ribs. The leading futures ranged as follows, as cor rected br .JohnM. Three Hundred lots Fold 'Within. Sixty Days and Fifty Houses Started. PE0PITABLE ENTERPRISE CATCHING Recent sales of central and suburban properties emphasize the statement fre quently made that values are steadily en hancing. W. A. Herron & Sons yesterday disposed of a lot 20x60, and an ordinary building, on Market street, near First ave nue, for f 9,500, or at the rate of $475 a foot front. This is the best price ever obtained for property of similar size in the square between First avenue and "Water street. The sale, in "Wilkinsburjr, reported yester day, at 260 a foot, illustrates the upward tendency in the rural districts. A few years ago the mere suggestion of such fig ures would have been laughed at. Buyers holding back for a reaction are making a mistake. Progress at Allqnippa. Aliquippa, the newest of the new manu facturing towns, on the Pittsburg and Lake x,ne xiuiirouu, u mues irom A utsourg ou the Ohio river, is building up at a rapid rate. The plan was put on the market just two months ago, and already 300 lots have been disposed of and 0 or more stores and dwellings started. Five large manufactories will be ready for operation within 60 days, giving employment to about 1,000 people. Among the public buildings in course of erection is a three-story brick and stone hotel containing 45 to GO rooms. A Spur to Enterprise. It is characteristic of Pittsburg, as of other cities, that the success of any project is followed by others of the same nature The success of office buildings has been the occasion of the construction of a supply at least equal to the demand. In the same na", the readiness with which apartment houses were taken led to the erection of a considerable number all tmall, it is true, but large enough for a beginning, and pav ing the way for better results in the luture. The success of rapid transit from a small beginning stimulated similar enterprise, until to-day Pittsburg has the mdst com plete system in the country. Success ap peals lorcibly to investors., a tact empha sized by the interest capitalists- are -taking in real estate. Trsterda y's Building Permits. The Money Market Likely to Remain Un disturbed Until Tall. If there was any Improvement in the local monetary sitnatlon yesterday it was very slight. This refers to discounting. Clerical work was fair, checking and" depositing being well up. Some relief is expected from the pressute of idle lunds during tho July settlements, but there is not much likeli hood that the present easy condition of the marcet will be materially distui bed beforo fall. Interest rates were 56. Bank clear ings wero $2,621,597 91 and balances $606,399 89. A Chicago paper says: "It is a fact not generally known that with all the talk about dullness and depression in money tho loan lines or the smaller national banks and of most of the large trust companies have reached proportions that are quite sntisiac tory to their managers. That tho discount market is quiet enough is pi oven by tho light-offerings of commercial paper to note brokers.
