SHORTS BUYING IN.
They Purchase Over rive Million Bushels
to Cover Sales They Made at Higher
Prices They Get Out 10c Lower Than
Did the Plunger Pardridge.
CHICAGO The event to-day In the wheat
pit was the covering of a line of 1,060,000
bushels or more by Charley Wright He has
been short for a considerable time, having
put out the bulk of it, it was supposed at 82o
to 85c, and not only stood by It on the recent
bnlge to 88c,"Tut added considerably to It.
On a break to-day he seemed to have con
rinded that it was the proper place to cover.
Hid begun to buy In. He was Joined by
Cudaby, Linn and other big shorts. Their
purchases all together are said to have
reached over 1,000,000 bushels to-day. ,
Owing to the continued fine weather, the
reak cables, lower domestic markets and
tbe free selling on stop loss orders, tbe first
tales were at b decline from Saturday,
n-ltn July at 7sc and a few transactions at
na.
XJ
hese prices were loo lower than the bulge
Tuesday last when Partridge did the bulk of
his covering of short wheat at (500,000 or
$750,000 loss.
W 1th some fluctuations the market rallied
steadily from the start, and closed UK
higher than Saturday. There was buying on
California account, rumors of large freUht
engagements here, a better export bnslness
at the seaboard, and reports or foreigners
buying futures. In addition came reports of
hue win as aolng damage in nansaa.
Corn was active and unsettled, ruling
weaker at the start, but stronger as the
session advanced, and the bulge was fairly
well maintained. Offerings at the opening
weie immense and initial transactions were
at l&lo decline, the country being very
flee sellers as also local operators. The fine
weather all over the West and the large
receipts, both present and prospective, were
the factors which caused the early weakness
and at the decline a good demand sprung
up, and market giadually advanced 2J25o

market ruled steady for awhile, reacted Jic.
changed some and at the close July had
gained ?c, and September c-
Oats opened with bides at JitslJic decline,
and the market for a time was very weak.
Tho longs unloaded the shorts, rather over
did and in their efforts to cover later in the
day they advanced prices 22Jo and the
cloe was steady at about the outside and
o higher than on Saturday.
The almost panicky decline in the wheat
ana corn markets at the start similarly ai
fected provisions for a few moments. There
was a sudden rally in the hog products, and
a strong market sneceding the momentary
weakness leferred to at tho opening. The
chief feature of the day's business was tho
curing lor account oi wngnt oi auout t,wv,
000 pounds or ribs. Such ncaw purchases
advanced tho price from $6 S56 5 the
market closing at the latter price, as against
$6 37K on Saturday. Lard and pork also re
coveied from the early weakness and closed
with improvements respectively of fie in
lard and 20c per barrel in pork.
Vessel room was in good demand and rates
held steady at 2c for wneat and lJio for corn
to Buffalo.
Estimated receipts for to-morrow. Wheat,
255 cars; corn, 1,225 cars: oats, 655 cars; hogs,

FEATURES OP MONET AND SPECULATION
The Order of United American Mechanics

through the agency of Morris & Aisbitt, a
large lot on Prospect avenue, near the rail
road station, on which they propose erect

John F. Sweeny succeeded yesterday in
closing a sale of some importance, which has
been pending for some time. The property
consists of a square of very eligibly located
ground'near the Herron Hill Park, belong
ing to George L. Herron. Mr. Sweeny
represents a firm that will immediately
break ground tor the erection ot houses on
the entire plot which will soon be placed on
the market
Fresh Building Schemes.
Ground was broken yesterday in the
Greenfield avenue plan of lots for two nice
dwellings, making about 90 houses just fin
ished or under way in this locality. Peter
Shields, the agent, yesterday sold a fiue
lot in the same place to a prominent busi
ness man, who will improve it at once with
a commodious general store, whioh will be
a great convenience to a large population.
Mr. Shields also sold two. lots in th'e Sshen
ley Park plan, both of which will he im
proved during the summer.
The Baltimore and Ohio people are at
work on the bridge at Second and Green
field avenues. The Greenfield avenue elec

with some buying for foreign account, but
tbe local traders followed the lead of the

suffered the effects of the new move of tbe

Tbe supply of strictly fresh eggs is small,
and the kind on the market are weak at in
side quotations. With the exception of
iancy creamery butter all dairy products
are dull. The supply of cheese and coun
try butter exceeds demand, and the drift
of markets is toward a lower level. Poultry
is in light snpply, but demand is also light
and prices are unchanged. Ihe first can
telopes of the season arrived from New
Orleans within a day or two and are in de
mand at 50G0c apiece.
Home-grown strawberries are in fair sup
ply, and all choice stock moves freely.
Tuesday s receipts promise to be the largest
