IRISH SPIES AT WORK.
One Constable Das Been Working
Here Since Last January.
JAMES LAUGHLIN, TEE INFORHEB,
Is Now Sending in Reports of the Local
Fenian Societies.
TWENTY EMISSARIES NOW IN AMEKICA
Ihe Enclisli Government is carrying the
war against Ireland into America. That
Government believe much of the plotting for
the Irish cause is done here in the United
States. In consequence the British author
ities are keeping close watch over the pro
ceedings of the various Irish organizations
in America. For this purpose 20 special
members of the Irish constabulary force are
now in this country sending to the English
officials accurate reports of all the meetings
held, the various undertakings of the Irish
in America and exactly what aid they are
giving to the Land League and other secret
societies in Ireland. They are also keeping
watch on all emissaries of the Irish party in
this country.
One of these constables is at work in
Pittsburg now, and lias been on duty here
at least since last January. His presence
here was first discovered when he went to a
Pittsburg notary public to make an affi
davit as to his w arrant for pay.
He was a tall man at least six feet in
heieht, with broad shoulders and just a
little stooped. He was raw-boned rather
than long, and had a halting kind of a slow
Malic His head was unusually large and
covered with a heavy knot of iron gray hair
that grew long. He wore an old-fashioned
stiff hat with a broad brim and high full
crown just a trifle battered in the rear. His
features were large and his bushy gray eye
brows almost hid a pair of dull gray eyes.
His nose is large and dotted all over with
blackheads. Besides he wore a havy gray
beard that spread out in all directions and
gave him the appearance of a man at least
CO years. He wore very plain dark clothes.
James Laughlin tlie Noted Informer-
After he had sworn to his vouchers he
produced a blue envelope and asked the
notary to address it ?or him. The address
be gave was "Paymaster General, Dublin
Castle, Ireland." When this was done he
started out.
"Why is that old man writing to Dublin
Castle?" was asked of the notary.
"He has just niade'affidavit," was the re
ply, "to having worked diligently for the
past three months on matters assigned to
liim. He signed the voucher 'James Laugh
lin,' anil said he was a member of the con
stabulary force of the Queen in Ireland."
A hasty trip was at once made to the post
office where James Lauchlin, the Irish con
stable, was mailing his letter. He was
followed" to various places downtown and
then disappeared into Schmidt's liquor
Btore on Fifth avenue. All trace of him
was lost there. It is not known whether he
was disguised and made a hasty change in
there, but in some way he vanished into
thin air.
Yesterdav these facts were laid before
Col. Felix McKuight of the Board of Erin.
?IIc said he had information that 20 of these
secret agents were at work in the large
cities of America, but this was the first
time he knew of the presence of one here.
"When the name Jones Laughlin was men
tioned to him and a general description
given of his build Mr. McKnight said he
knew the man's record and had heard of
liim, but did not know he was in America
beiore. Said Colonel McKnight:
Wanted to Lynch Hlin in Ireland.
"James Laughlin is a name well known to
ilic workers for Irish liberty. He was an in-
former there, and sevcial years ago he gave
l ip tome important secrets of the Land
i .eague to the Government. The feeling
'as so hot against him that the English au-
horitics had to hurry him away to save him
fioni being lynched. He mav hae been
working for the Government then, and now
there is certainlyno doubt about it. I will
do all I can to find the man."
Mr. McKnight was then given a fuller de
scription of Laughlin, and at once declared
ae had seen him. He said: "I believe
that man is one who is playing the peddler.
I have seen him several times. He goes by
another name, but he is an Irishman, and
the description fits him exactly. 1 do not
know that he belongs to our order, but he
may to some ot the others. I believe I
will be able to locate this spy within a
week."
The Board of Erin of Allegheny county
held its regular meeting yesterday in It of
L. hall and elected the following new
officers: Thomas Farnon, of McKeesport,
County Delegate; Patrick Connen, Pitts
bunr, County Secretary; Edward Wallace,
McKeesport, Assistant Secretary; John
Itowan, Frankbtown, Treasurer. There
were over 200 members present
AT THE OPEN DOOR,
A Finn to Carry the Gospel to tho Masses
services to Bo Hold In Tents Through
out the City Iteachliis the Hopeless and
Tlionchtless.
The Open Door Mission of this city is
making extensive preparations to further its
work. About the middle of June a large
:ent will be erected some place in the city
r et to be named. Open air meetings will be
leld during the summer evenings. The
.ent will be 40x60 feet, and will have a ca
oacity for the seating of 300 people. It is
.lie purpose of the mission to move the tent
rrom place to .place in the city at intervals
A ten dajs.
The cot of running the tent will amount
to about $75 per week. It will be under
he management of Itev. L M. Houser, of
Brushton, who will employ evangelists and
nusic whenever they can be secured. The
jlau of the meeting is non-sectarian and
lesigned to employ the working elements
if the Church's congregation.
The present Open Door Mission service
;eld on Fourth avenue, between Market
md Ferry, has been successful in reaching
,he despondent, the dUcouragcd and the
aoneylesr, who were men of prominence,
ind who by intemperate habits have gone
town and donu until they have lost all
lope. The tent work is designed to reach the
i ell-to-do middle class, who thoughtlessly
;eglect religious matters and who are not
-eached by the ordinary methods employed
n the churches. Ministers of all congrega
10ns who may be convenient will be re
vested to join in the work. There has
een no money pledged for the work of the
stensive religious campaign, but work of
o much merit will modestly command the
ttention ot aggressive Pittsburg Chris
ians. Last night the first open air meeting
,as held in frout of the little mission on
I'ourth avenue.
