THE TRADE OUTLOOK.
Hides Have Been Keduced by the
Allegheny Tanners, and
PEICES AM LOWER THAU EVER.
The Bull MoTements in Cereals feera Short
LiTed This Season.
A BOSTON TIEW OP THE LEATHER TRADE
Orwcs of The Dispatch, )
Pittsbuko, Saturday, June 4. j
It -will be seen by reference to home mar
ket column that all products of the dairy
are at their lowest price for this season.
Elgin creamery butter is 2c per pound
lower than a week ago, and slow at the de
cline. Ohio and New York cheese are off
about He per pound within the week, and
as to country butter the trade is entirely de
moralized. Immense quantities were
damped on to our markets, which-were sold
at 10c per pound, and the best could not be
gold at more than 13c to 14c per pound.
In the week past choice old potatoes have
been Tery scarce in this market, and prices
haTe advanced from 50c tc 70c-per bushel.
In the same tiro Bermuda and .Mobile new
potatoes have declined about 52 00 per bar
rel. The hot weather of the past few days
has brought heavy demands on tropical
frnits, especially lemons and bananas, and
markets are very firm. Apples are about
over for this seascn. The ejrg market ha?
been ahout stationery all the week, with 17c
as top price for job lotb.
In CreAl X.incs.
The upward movement of shell corn dur
ing the latter part of May, came to pause, a
few days before the month expired, and
since that time prices have declined 4c to
5c per bushel from the highest point. All
bull movements in cereal lines seem to De
short lived this season. Once prices are ad
vanced u few points, an abundance comes to
the front showing that there is plenty in
the land of last year's abundant crops. Ear
corn did not join in the upward movement
of shell corn and is fairly steady at old
prices. Oats have proved the strong factor
of cereal markets during the week. Prices
have steadily beea moving upward, and
Saturday's markets were 3c per bushel
above those ot the previous Saturday. Ke
ceipts ot wheat and flour have been large tor
the week and markets are quiet in both
lines. Jlill iced and hay are slow at a shade
lower prices than were obtained a week ago.
Drop in Hides anil Calfskin.
The action of New England tanners in
curtailing production of leather is already
felt herein lower priced hides. Pittsburg
and Allegheny tanners joined together
within a lew days and agreed unanimously
to reduce quotations, the new scale to take
effect on Monday, June G. Tbe prices agreed
on are the lowest in the past generation. A
leading dealer said to-day: "I have never
seen pricts as low as now, and with the low
prices we are havinc of late very slow mar
kets. "
Following is a classification ot hides and
scaie of nrices adopted by the tanners of
Pittsburg and Aliegiienv City, to take
eflcct Monday, June 6, 1692:
Green steer hides, trimmed, 75 lbs and up.... 6

The Leather Outlook.
The Boston JTcra'd has this to say of the
situation and prospects:
The situation in the leather market shows
a decided improvement. WMlo boot and
sboo manufacturers are not unanimous as
as to the importance of the. movement for
curtailment, they show their practical faith
in it by the amount of leather they are buy
ing. Upper leather has not lelt the good
effect to the same extent, as has been noted
in the market lor sololcather,,but still there
is a decided improvement thero, una the
outlook for the month is considered very
good. Prices cannot be changed, hut deal
ers are getting lull quotations, and are
really selling considerable leather without
making any concessions. Some sole leather
dealers report the Hay business as very
heavy, and the June business as promising
very welL Others are more conservative,
but all are feeimg the good eflects of the
movement As a matter of fact, there has
as yet been no dimunition in the receipts of
leather, but this will come later, and will be
distubuted through the next threo months,
as the agreement was to shut down for 60
days, without specifying the exact time
eacli tannery should begin. The result of
this action is beins largely discounted, and
stocks are being well w orked down.

CHICAGO Wheat, corn and oats started
on another Dull rampage Saturday, and
kept it up all day. Wheat, compared with
the closing price yesterday, is Jo dearer for
July. Corn is up "2Ve and oats lo. Pro

weather and anxious shorts supplied the
main features of the grain market. Ex

BUYING FROM LONDON
PRODUCES A 1ABGE SELLING MOTE
MENT IN STOCKS.
A Moderate Business and No Pronounoed
Features Khort Sales of tho Bears Are
the Moving Force In the Markets-Bonds
Unusually Qnict,
New Tobk, June 4. The stock market dis
played a moderate volume of business to
day, but tho animation was again at the
expenso ot values. Tho bears, in the marked
absence of organized support, became ag
gressive and their operations resulted in
material losses among tho stocks which re
ceived particularattention from them. These
were principally Burlington, Rock Island,
Northern Pacific preferred, Lackawanna,
Sugar and Kansas and Texas. The only
strong points in the list were held without
making any material improvement.
There was considerable encouragement to
the bulls t the opening in the shapo of buy
inir apparently for London account; hut, as
usual oflate, upon the appearance of for
eign buying, selling begins with more vigor,
and while ft is pieposterous to say that no
long stocks come upon the market, tho pro
pelling force in tbe declines established is
undoubtedly tho short sales of the boars.
The gener.il list, as a rule, was dull and as
featureless as usual, and the firm opening
was succeeded by a drooping temper in sym
pathy witn the movement among the lead
ers. "The close was fairly active and weak
at about tho lowest prices of the day.
Thetotalsaloof stocks to-day were 116,
376 shares Including: Atchison, 1,550; Chi
cago Gas, 1.C50; Erie, 1,520; Louisville and
Nnshvillo, 1.9JS: Northern Pacific prefened,
5.824; New Ensland, 8,135; Reading, 13,500;
St. Paul, 7,215; Western Union, 1,778.
Railroad bonds were unusually quiet, the
total transactions being only $813,000, while
the prevailing temper of the share list was
closely followed, with the lesult of making
some mRtorial losses for the day. The most
promising issue 'was the Kansas and Texas
seconds, which were sold down on tho prob
ability of the non-payment of the next cou
pon. The other changes, however, were
generally Insignificant, and the number of
bonds tradod m was unusually small.

TEE WEEK IN OIL.
A Slump Followed by it Reaction Obstacles
to Improvement.
Trading was unsatisfactory, the hulk of it
being incident to the change of options. The
features weie heavy selling on Thursday by
Oil City people, and a lecession in the Euro
pean markets. These caused a slump in the
middle of the week. The strength later was
due to some disposition amonjf outsiders to
buy, and sellers having "shot their wnd,"
removing the principal pies-ure, a reaction
followed. There was no special develop
ment in tho Held, and production remained
in statu quo. Fluctuations for tho five days

It will he seen tl-at whilo tho finish was

outsiders manifest very little interest. Thore

That's what the human

the American part of it.
There are a few left who

There was once a prejudice
against Cottonseed oil. But
people who are alivs, who
investigate, who have no
bigotry in their composition,
have found that pure', refined
cottonseed oil combined with
selected beef suet is a better
article in every conceivable
way than hog's lard, c And so
they wisely use it for cook
ing and are correspondingly
healthy and happy. The sales
of Cottolene are enormous
and constantly increasing; a
proof that it is appreciated by
appreciative persons.
Ask your grocer for it.

qnlrc. "American ladies are certainly the most stylish

In tlie world. Pittsburg women are as good ex
amples of tbls as 1 have seen in any town where 1
have been. But they have not that stability and
roggedness that you see In the women of liondou
and throughout England."
The above remartwas made by an Englishman
who has been spending a few days in town. It was
intended to be half complimentary, perhaps half
sarcastic, but it actually hit the real trouble of
most American women. They are stylish, bright
and attractive, but there is no denying the fict
that they posses such delicate and high-strung
nerves that they are peculiarly susceptible to weak
ness and disease. They are subject to despondency
and blue ferfings because their nervous systems are
more or lessshattered, because they need and xnnst
have assistance.
BJany women in tbls section realize that there
has been a discovery made by a great scientist, an
absolute relief and cure forjnst the trouble which
afflicts American women. The discovery referred
to is Palne's celery compound. It is not a cheap
specific, sarsaparllla or essence, bnt a grand dis
covery, which by reason of its great merits is to
day tbe most popular of ail remedies.
Volumes cnld be written in the words of those
who have spoken in its praise. "Women every
where find that It is a true food for the nerves and
brain, for it gives strength and health and restores
new life to the weary and despondent. The renew
ing and Invigorating power of this Compound is
marvolons, and to-day it is acknowledged by mnny
women to be a grand friend tbat has Invigorated
their life and brought about happiness instead of
misery.
