ES&RS&U THE PITTSBURG- DISPATCH, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1, 1892. s??5SI83UE EARLY IN THE FIELD. Allegheny Politicians Already An nounce Their Candidacy. ONE EFFECT OF THE BAKER LAW. Primaries Will Be Held in December Instead of February. TOTES FALLING OFF IN SOME "WARDS No sooner has the legislative contest in Allegheny attained its height than the usual large number of old and new candi dates boldly make their appearance in the political arena and declare (laying aside all mishaps) to take an important part in the next primaries, although this important event is yet quite a distance offi It is not generally known that thS jeit primaries, owing to the Baker law, will not be held in February, as heretofore, but 42 days sooner, or early In the month of De cember of the present year. Then It will be determined who the next City Fathers will be and which ones will be acceptable out of the large number who are anxious to secure a place in the Council chamber and have al ready announced themselves as candidates. Prominent among the new men wlio have declared themselves willing to take an active part in the management of Alle gheny's affairs are William Josenlians and Frederick Malsch for Common Council from the First ward, and in the same ward J. JIc Jlillen Smith has decided to oppose the re election of Artliur Kennedy for Select Coun cil. Several well-known politicians in Alle gheny do not see how Mr. Smith can be .elected over his opponent unless some rad icnl change takes place. It has created much comment recently I among tbe residents of the city thatthero .are so many houses vacant in the First, 11 Fifth and Sixth wards, particularly in the f First. Hundreds have moved away in the lat few months, among whom were many voters, and the majority of these were friends of Mr. Kennedy. Probably on this account Mr. Smith thinks he has a better chance, and this i" his principal reason for announcing himself a candidate. Besides these gentlemen mentioned there nre a number of otliers coming to the front in the different waids who are already having stickers printed, which will. In a lew days, very likely adorn the lamp posts and tele graph poles in the more conspicuous parts of tha citr. I addition to the Council Chamber, asiong the other public positions assailed by anxious candidates, Is the Mayor's office. Quite a large number have asserted tneir entire reliability to conduct the business attached to the Chief Magistrate's office, and prominent among these are H. K.' Tyler, John Hendricks and W. S. Griffiths. Thee are only three of the large number who have thus far made their appearance, bnt from now until the nominations are brought to a close, there will be dally addi tions to the list.
