THE PTTTSBUIIG DISPATCH. SATURDAY, MAY 28. 1893. r V MUW GOLCONDA Americans Who Go lo Honduras With Gilded Imaginations SECT MAST DISAPPOINTMENTS. . C r.lioaJes Tc!h the results of Ilia i:ce:nt reservations. FEATURES TYUICIl RETARD SCCCESS Tlie jiiaiiy persons who have emigrated to Honduras during the last few years are complaining They are not becoming pros perous laud proprietors as rapidly as they iris-li. and in some portions of that torrid, tea-girt country here are cries lor assist aace icllinj up. &. C. Klioades, of ew York, was seen by a Dispatch man yesterday at the Seventh Arpuue Hotel, and told of the condition of affiiirs in Honduras as he found it a couple of weeks aa "There h:i. been so much written and talked o'," lie -aid, "regarding the wonder ful opportunities to become wealthy in a short lime in Honduras that I decided to see for myself. Consequently when I was ttavm iu that locality a short time ago I jvent over to Honduras and passed over a considerable portion of the developed lands. Ilmlcmtrd With Imaginations. "The people I found there were composed Mostly of hardv, industrious Americans who had citiicr neglected their golden opportunities at home or had made dismal failures, and lnd emigrated with highly Illustrated imaginings of becoming rich the morning after their arrival. But they lidnt, "and the truth of the matter is that they are still delving and toiling early and late upon their larms. "The country is favorable to the growth if orange, lemon, lime and cocoauut trees. These plantations are very easy to maintain alter Jairly started, but the trouble with the Honduras pioneers is that it is so diffi cult to get their trees started. There is hard, tiresome labor lequired for planting, prun ing and caring lor the trees, and with the Jaziness ot the natives who are employed, the farmer is obliged to do the greater part oi the labor himself. A l4ick or Native Kncrsy. "The native negroes are mnch worse than the negroes ot South America or the South ern States. They haven't the energy of the ihiftic-s 'poor whites' of the times before the liehellion. It is almost impossible to make them work, and when they do it is under such protest that their work is but half done and the farmer is frequently obliged to go over what they have done. "These things together with the high price of foods of foreign manufacture and the slow, deliberate urowth of the trees, has a tending to discourage the average man ami there have been a number of them who liave thrown up tiie ta-k and have re turned to more remunerative vocations in their native land. Others have drifted into the lazy.careless life ot the natives and have lost the energy and zeal that dis tinguished theai when they first arrived. "Honduras is undoubtedly a good country for a man who can manage his estate bv mail or who has the money to live on, but for the man of meager means it is not quite so desirable." MLEGTED IT GOLD NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. The Reason That So Many People Die of Consumption, Which Kills About Nine Out of Ten Who Die of Disease. Two-Thirds of the. Death's From Lung Trouble Might Be Avoided If the Catarrhal Conditions Which Tend to It Were Treated and Cured Heed the Warning1 Signs. it'COOK SAYS SHE IS SANE. .Mrs. Kuhn Was Committed Tuesday by Drs. Kmrrlliic; and Neelan. Tiist End circles were stirred up yester day over the announccmeut in Tin: Dis patch that Mrs. Blake was trying to have iirr daughter, Mrs. Harry 1'. Kuhn, re leased from Dmnont. Attorney "Willis McCook, who has charge cf the case, said yesterday Mrs. Kuhn was as-fine as anvbody and had only been com-initietf-T Jlixraont on Tuesday on a certifi cate from 0r-. Xeelan and Kmerling. The couple have bean separated for some time. Mrs. Kuhn owns a house on Highland ave nue and ha considerable money invested in stocks and bonds. The case conies up this morning. . Hardly a day passes In wlifrti Drs. Copeland, llall and liyen. are not Drought In contact with one. two, three or more cases in the last stages of consumption, aDd many of them so nlUictcd ith the diseaso that they are be yond relief, much less cure. The history of the majority of these cases is somewhat as follows: Some say that at sometime or another they had measles, which induced bronchial troublo and per sistent cough. Others say that at one timo or another they contracted cold, followed by cough and expectora tion, better in summer, worse in winter, attended by a gradual loss of flesh ana strength. Others give a hlstoty of la grippe, and sav that since the disease they liavoueen subject to cough and rising of ninttery phlegm, shortness of breath, grad ual loss of flesh and of strength, and occa sional night sweats. Others again are un able to assign anv cause tor their ill hoalth, sav their ll'rst symptoms were a slight cough, generally dry and hacking, followed by the raising of a thin mucus, which In time became opaque and streaked w ith blood, at times wandering pains in the upper poitinn of the chest and between the shoulders, dislike of fatty food, dyspeptic symptoms, gradual decline in flesh and strength. Tliey tell us that tho family doc tor in attendance assured them it was only a little cold or bronchial trouble, or dyspep sia, or general debility, from which they wonld in time recover. When recovery or even improvement in these cases failed to show itself and the Eationt had lost nearly a third In weight, ecame pale and debilitated, the chest had lost either its power of expansion or con traction, the collar bone, ribe and bones of the shoulder joint became prominent, the night sweats profuse and weakening, tho stomach symptoms distressing, the cough per sistent and harassing, tho mucus purulent. the voice husky, tho flmrers clubbed and the mind abnormailv hopeful, the family and friends realize tfie situation, the true nature of the disease, call in another doctor experi enced in chest troubles, who pronunoes it an unmistakable case of consump tion. He assures the family that in that stage cure is hopeless, and advises them to resign themselves to the inevitable. The foregomc statement faiily represents the history and decline of the average con sumptive. It is needless to say that If tho true nature of the case were in time coi rectly diagnosed, and accordingly treated, the last and hopeless stags or tho disease would not have been reached. In view of our advanced knowledge of the different forms of consumption and of the several changes that take place In the lungs with the different stages of each form, and of the inventions and discoveries made to arrest the progress of these changes, there is no excuse for peiniitting this class of patients to pass into a hopeless decline.
