A Continuation of the Excitement of Wedncid.iy On'y a Light Trade in TMieat at Previous rrlces Contract Grading of Corn Improving Oats Quiet. CHICAGO Excitement centered In pro visions. Pork opened K10o higher and then advanced 20e on liberal buying by the "short interest." As soon as the demand subsided there was a leaction of 15c, and then another bulge of 10c on buying orders coming in from the country. The market fell off 5c later on, and then, under the in fluence of the strength ingrain and liberal bnying by a prominent packing institution, advanced about 15c, the highest point of tho nay. This was followed nj a decline of 5 7c; a reaction to a like extent, and a similar tailing off, tho market closing 22Kc higher than at tho same time j-esterduy. Lard gained 7c and closed strong, seemingly in dependent or other hog products, and was in more request than for some time past. Kibs opened at the final figures of yesterday, and then advanced 22Je in response to tho strength in pork and free bnj-ing; reacted later about 7c. and closed 15c higher than yesterday. In wheat only a slight business was trans acted and there were no important changes in price. The opening was about the same as yesterday's closing and eased off a trifle, then advanced Je; again eased off and prices declined r. ruled irregular and the closing was about Ko hie her than yesterday. It was claimed the Northwest sold some wheat carlv in the day, and that St. Louis and New York patties bought. Late in the session advices were received that it was raining in the West, and this caused an ad vance to tho top prices or the day. Corn showed decreasing activity, with fluctuations confined within a KC range. The prico was helped by rcpoit or rains in this State and Indiana. Business was chiefly local, tho trade buying on soft spots nnd selling on any advance. July closed o higher than yesterdaj-. There was very little heard from the deal in May corn to-day. The nronoi tion of contract corn in the daily receipts is heavily incicaing. Oats were not traded in with as much free dom as of late. The close was easy at J?c dccime trom yesterday. CITY REAL ESTATE. Prominent People Said to Have Made a Nice Haul in the East End. TWO LARGE BUILDING SCHEMES. Advantages of Western Pennsylvania Sub stantially Appreciated. FFATURES OP MONEY AND SPECULATION Among several interesting rumors in real estate circles yesterday was one that E. "W. Bigelow, Hobert Elliott and George Pea body, the contractor, had just consummated the purchase of about 500 feet of ground on McCully street, between Negley and High land avenues, Nineteenth ward, ior which they paid in the neighborhood ( ?25,000, or at the rate of $50 a foot frontage. The pur chasers will, according to information, im prove this property with a number of good dwellings. The contract for paving Mc Cully street has been let. Manufacturing Advantages Appreciated. "Western Pennsylvania is the Mecca of manufacturers. Abundance ot fuel and a perfect system of transportation br rail and water to all the markets of the country give it advantages possessed by no other section to produce quickly and cheaply. Nearly every town ot any importance in the western tier of counties is sustained in whole or part by manufactures, and those hitherto backward in this line are taking steps to repair the blunder. New Castle, Lawrence county, is wide awake to the im portance of this" matter, and is welcoming with hospitable hands the representatives of a large steel concern in operation at "Worcester, Mass., whose specialties are springs ana continuous rolling-mills, it is thought they will locate in New Castle, as they have practically agreed upon a lour acre site for their buildings. Pittsburg is deeply interested in .all movements of this kind"for, being the distributing point for 200 miles around, every industrial acquisi tion by surrounding towns brings grist to her mills. Tito New Building Schemes. As pointed out on different occasions, building statistics show that a great deal is going on in this line. Old schemes are ma turing and new ones are coming forward al most daily. It was learned yesterday from an inside source that Hou. David Kirk is contemplating the erection of 12 or 14 hand some dwellings on Darragh street, between Pif th avenue and Ursuline terrace. It as also learned that a prominent hank officer, in conjunction with a Southside improve ment company, is making arrangements for the erection" of between 30 and 40 houses in the Oakland district .special Features or Trade. ' Frequent sales show that large properties aroln lequest. Investors havo confidence in real estate. It Is rumored that the McVeigh property at Hawkins is about changing hands. Only two building permits were issued yesterday, both small, aggiegating $775. A rapid pace cannot be kept up 'indefinitely. Dullness in local secuilties does not mean weakness. The slumps occasionally noted nro miicly artificial, as shown by the ease with'which reactions aro brought about. Mr. C. Beriuger, the well-known real es tate broker, has purchased ten acres ot land in Kllbuck township for $12,000. Tuesday next, at 2 o'clock r. X., A. Z. Yesterday was another dull dav in tho lo cal stock market. There wero no sales at the first call. At the second 20 shares of Philadelphia Gas changod hands at 18 and 370 at 18. With few exceptions pi ices at the early calls were about the same as at tho finish the previous day. The fcatuie of the sccond.call was another raid on Philadelphia Gas by Morris & Brown. They had an order to sell a pretty big wad, and in doing so the price was forced down lrom 18K to IS. Although this pressure was removed in the afternoon and somo buyers appeared, the stock not only failed to react, but weakened still more, and finished on a b!dofl7K. 1 here was none for sale, how ever, at this figure. A TKOSPECT OF HIGHER ANTHRA-' CITE FIGURES nEt.PS THEM .. The Feeling In Richmond Terminal, Also, Is Better London Selling Has but Llt t'o Effect The Movement in Cordage Stops Bonds In Jlem.Tml. New York, May 26.-The stock market to-; day was less active ant presented about the same character and features as that of yes terday, though tho movements were on a i educed scale and considerable irregularity existed at times. The covering movement was checked in the early dealings by apparent selling In London; but as the last selling by the foreigners failed to produce any effect upon the exchange mat ket, iis was proba bly of the same character. .The feeling in the street remains the same, with Improved prospeots in the coal trade, but the general expectation that there will bean advance in the price of coal at the meeting to-day made the Coal stocksagatn tho leaders in the mar ket for a time, nnd the usual great activity was accompanied by nn upwnrd movement, though to-dav It was on a limited scald. Richmond and West.Point wns also a feat ure, and tho upward movement was in re sponse to the buying caused by tho Im pression that finally tho reorganization muddlo will be solved by placing5 it in the hands of Drcxel, Morgan 4 Co. The one weak point in the list was New England, which wns subjected to one of its sudden and mysterious movements. The Industrial? were not so prominent in tho market, and tho movement in Cordage came to a halt, though all the others were ad vance I fractionally. Among the Grangers. Rock Island was tho only one in which the movements wcie or special importance; and, whilo it was subjected to consldeiable picssure In the foienoon, a full rally oc curred later. The specialties which have of late l eceived so much attention ere held quiet and stag nant to-day, and the transactions which gave chatacter to the market were in rail road stocKs entirely, and in those the usual leaders. The market closed heavy, but gen erally at about the level of the opening fig ures. The total sales of stocks to-day were 321,184 shares, including: Atchison, 13,0; Erie, 17,000: Louisville and Nashville, 4,100; Noith ern Pacific pieferred, 25,490; New England, 29,395; Reading, 53,930; Richmond and West Point, 28,885; St. Paul, 20.338; Union Pacific, 3.820; Western Union, 14,634: Wheeling and Lake Erie, 3,300. Railroad bonds were still In good demand, and While the transactions in the Atchison Incomes were extended to $577,000 out of a total of $2,745 000, they wete kept within comparatively narrow limits, and tho Rich mond and H est Point 5s lairly became the feature of the day, with a rise or 3 per cent to 60. Other chnnges, as usual on a Arm mar ket, were small as a rule, but almost Invaria bly in the upward direction. TJNIFOSMLY DISCOURAGING Are the fTeek's Advices From thn Lead ing; Trade Centers,as to the Iron Trade. New Yoke, May 26. flpecfn. The Iron Age trade report says: Our advices from the leading trade centers this week are al most unliormly discouraging. Pig iron con tinues to be seriously depressed, the restric tion of production thus far mado having failed to affect tho market in any respect. Too many lurnaces are pressing their prod uct for sale to permit aiiy improvement in B rices. Philadelphia, Pittsbnrg and lilcago seem to bo subject to pre cisely the fame influences. While the so-called standnrd brands aie Melt hold, the makers of pig Iron less favorably known are taking lower and lower prices. An inevitable settling of a ni nes in ceneral to a still lower level seems to bo Impending unless there Is very shortly a decided improvement in tho demand. As long as pig iron Is depressed it seems futile tolooklorimpiovement in other lines of trade. Steel billets are still weak, with sales reported in Eastern Pennsylvania nt equiv alentto$22. Pittsburg Western huers aio holding off, waiting for a further decline. Foreign markets, by cable, arerevlewod as follows: Stocks of ii on in w arrant stores havo been further reduced. Tlicqu'intityot Scotch is now 456 000 ions, against 463,000 tons a week ago, nnd that of Cleveland, has fallen off from SH.000 to 77,000 tons. Scotch warrants prices have diopped, In the face of tho sta tistical exhibit, to40s7d; but Cleveland has Improved to 89s 2il and uematltes to 493 lid. Hematite wni rants for prompt delivery are scarce, and makers ask is 6d above warrant prices, altliougu experiencing a iu mar ket. It Is reported that tho Durham miners aro n illing to resume work at 10 per cent 1 eduction in wages, and the owners have declined to entertain the proposition.
