20-1 gg00l00Jgg THE' FITTSBtrKG "DISPATCH." MONDAY, EAGLE EYES ON DUSS. A Whole Year to Bo Consumed in Overhauling Economy Books. MIFjIIOSS UNDER INQUISITION. The Trnstce's Enemies Will Try to Make Cut a Conspiracy Case, WHILE HE COURTS INVESTIGATION I SPECIAL TELEGRAM TO THE DISPATCH. Beaver Falls, May 1. At a recent meeting of the Harmony Society at Econ omy, it was decided at once to begin an in Testigation of the entire affairs of the so ciety, both financially and otherwise, and an expert accountant and auditor are now hard at work making the investigation. In their research of the financial, commercial and manufacturing interests of the society, which cover millions of money invested, the experts employed -will be Riven every assistance by the Board of Elders of the society. As the ground to be gone over is so ex tensive, the amount involved so vast and the whole affair, covering a period of over half a century, so complicated, it is said it will require at least a year of earnest labor on the part of the accountants to put mat ters in shape to make a perfect and satis factory report. The Economites interest in this place, which consists of the Economy Bavincs Bank, the Great Western Pile "Works said to be the largest file works in the world the Beaver Falls Steel Works, the Union Drawn Steel Works, the Sprocket Chain Works, and also the society's largo real estate Interests In this place, will be in vestigated. May Rrqnlre More Than a Tear. Besides the- above enumerated interests, all the factories, mills, coal mines, timber lands, oil interests etc, and in fact every thlngowned by the society, both in Economy and elsewhere, will be investigated by the experts and acted jpon by the auditors. It is asserted by those who profess to be con versant with the affairs of the Harmony So ciety, that this investigation will cover in vestments acgregatinc; several hundred mil lions or dollars, and they doubt ir a year is sufficient time to make ttie investigation; but it may bo that the methodical manner in wliich the society keeps its accounts will mnkc the task much easier than was first anticipated. This proceeding has been brouzht about lv the enemies or Trustee John S. Duss. Failing in their attempt to oust him for his alleged conspiracy with Dr. Teed, of Koresh nn fame, to get control or the Economites' millions tliey still have a lingering doubt in their minds that since Mr. Duss, owing to the failing health of the venerable Father Henrlci. lias had almost supreme power in the affairs of the society, and has to a large extent, made all tho investments or late years, he (Duss) has been manipulating mat ters on the quiet, so that eventually Dr.Teed will upon the death of Henricl step by fraud into tho position in the society's affairs w hich he could not acquire openly. Duss Is a Kern Itusiness Man. Injustice to Mr. Duss it must be said that is soon as he ascertained that those who looked upon him with suspicion talked of an investigation he demanded the investiga tion to bo made. He feels confident that, so far as lie is concerned, the business of the society will be fonnd to be in sood shape. Among those outside of the tocicty Mr. Duss is looked upon as the most enterprising business man in authority in Economy, and that all his moves have been made in the sole interest or the society. He is shrewd. Jar-seeing, energetic and indefatignable, and so ar all His investments have paid hand somely. Yet. with all these qualifications, Mr. Duss is looked upon with suspicion by a largo number of the members of the society, and tnose who opposed Jir. duas ana are still op posing him. say that bcTnro the auditors aro thiongh some developments will be made that will startle the whole community. "What the nature of these developments are, the opposition refuse to l-eveal In detail, bui say thev will bo sufficient to show that a deep conspiracy has existed for some years pn-,t.betwcon Dr. Teed and certain members ot the Hirmony Society. Bv this alleged plot the Koreshan would, at no distant day, -rain control of the vast millions of the Economites for the sold purpose of glorify ing Dr. Teed and his followers. A Wll-Condoctpl Spealc-Kasy Raid Tills the Llttlo Jail There. McKeestort, Pa May L Special, An open war was quietly inaugurated against alleged spcak-easies by Mayor Tilbrook and Chier or Police W. F. Young to-day. It -nas conducted systematically and losulted in ten alleged disorderly houses being pulled and 42 prisoners being arrested. The re called lock-up, containing six cells, built in a close, dingy room, with no ventilation, proved too small to hold the crowd packed therein like sardines. At no time in the his tory of the city lias it hold more occupants, but they were picked in, as the Mayor al lowed no forfeits to bo taken, although as hiirhas$123u head was offered immediately after the arrest as a forfeit for appearance Mouday morning. Several were allowed to put uj) forfeits later, wliich made a little more room lor the balance of tho prisoners. The police were instructed to force doors if refused admittance. Tho proprietors of speakeasies have had a hard time of it under Mayor Tilurook's administration, and have adopted so many precautions to avoid arrest that It has been necessary to force doors or give up the battle. Mayor Tilbrook had the night force of 20 men in citizens' clothes divided into squads, each of whom had warrants for the arrest of ccitain per sons charged with conducting disorderly houses, and were ordered to serve them. Among those under arrest are a number of well-known young men who would like to put up heavy foneits for liberty, but who were compelled to stay and laco the music in the morning.
