THE PITTSBUBG DISPATCH, FRIDAY; APRIL 2fy 1891
GOULDS GREAT COUP.
A Warren Man Expresses Admira-tiott-for-na
Gigantic Deal That
CAPTUEED TEXAS LUMBER LAUDS.
'Where the Building Material of the Fn
tore Will Come From.
A-BRIGHT OUTLOOK FOE TIMBERMEN
J. IdVBeznls, a prominent lumberman of
the Allegheny Valley, came Into the city
yesterday from his home at "Warren. Sir.
Bemls said he was sot conversant enough
with the doings of the officers at the State
Insane Asylum to speak ot the investigation
of the charges against the officers and guards
that is now going on. "I do not know how
near the truth these reports maybe," he
continued, "and hare heard but little talk
about the matter at home."
Speaking of lumber, Sir. Bemis said this
year would doubtless prove a good one for
the lumbering interests, and particularly so
with pine and hemlock.
"What are the chances for South Amer
ican lumber being shipped to the Xorth to
compete with native-grown timber?"
queried the reporter.
Vast Pino Forest In the South.
"That will scarcely be done," answered
the lumber man reflectively, "until the
vast pineries of the Southern part of our
own country have been used up, and it will
take a great manv years for that to be done.
Southern pine differs from the Northern
pine in many respects, and with the many
varieties we have at home it will scarely be
neccessary to go to alien land for our build
ing timber. The Southern pine belt is
about 400 miles wide and extends in an
almost unbroken line from the Carolinas
into Texas. That grown in the latter State
is considered the best in America. It is of
the long leaf family of pines and is very
strong and durable. It is really the most
valuable timber land "West of the Rockies,
and is eagerly, but vainl v soueht for bv pur
chasers. Jay Gould made a celebrated pur
chase a few year s aco that was certainly one
of the cleverest pieces of work that has
been done for some time in the lumber busi
ness, at least. As the story is apropos I
will relate it.
Jay Gould's Great Lumber Coap.
"Jay Gould with some other Xew Yorker
of great w ealth, in passing through Texas,
paid more than passing attention to the tim
ber land there, as the second gentleman
knew more or less of the value of timber
land. They made a thorough inquiry re
garding it, and as a result, when they re
turned to Gotham they deputized a small
army of agents to go into the Texas piner
ies for the purpose of buying up the land.
As everyone knows, the average Texan of
that district is so poor that his dogs have to
go scouting for food, and when these agents
of Gould's came along with money galore
the small property owners sold for a mere
song. Every foot of ground from a five
acre farm to a whole community
was bought up until Mesrs. Gould
and his associate, whose name I
cannot recall, were the titled owners of
orer 400,000 acres of the finest timber land
in America. It could be cut up and sold
and the proprietors could realize enormous
revenues, but theJr "purpose was a mere
speculation, and the probabilities are that
the forests will be allowed to stand for dec
ades to come. It was a rare coup," and Jlr.
Bemls sighed and fell into a reverie.

Another tale of "one's loss, another's gain." This time
a Scotch weaver is the loser, and you the gainer, as usual.
500 pieces of Scotch Cheviot were recently landed in
New York and sold at auction to the highest bidder. The
cloth had been imported on order of an Eastern clothing
manufacturer, who failed while the ship bearing the goods
was' en route. An enterprising New York concern gobbled
them up at a ridiculously low price, and, after having made
them up into suits, sold about half of them to us. We got
the benefit of the low cost of the cloth; and we, in turn, give
it to you. Come in, then, -and take your choice from these
excellent and fashionable Scotch Cheviot Suits for only $12.
They come in all different shades of tan, brown, grey, blue
and black, also mixtures, broken checks and plaids. The
styles are single and double-breasted Sacks, Cutaway or
Square. The trimming is first class, The make is faultless.
The fit is perfect They are suits which, under ordinary cir
cumstances, could not be sold for less than $20 or $22. In
deed, we venture to say that some of the Pittsburg clothiers
have themselves paid $20 for the same identical qualitie.
These Scotch Cheviot Suits are especially suitable for busi
ness wear, and every shrewd merchant, bookkeeper or clerk
will avail himself of this golden opportunity to save $10 on
his new Spring Suit.
Now, then, let the rush commence. First come, first
served. $12 buys your choice of all these elegant imported
Scotch Cheviot Suits.
