MOEE LIKE BUSINESS.

They Have Been for Months.

THREE MILLS COMING TO THIS SIDE
, ffpECIAL TELIGHAM TO TIIK DtSPATCn.3
New Yoke, April 28. The Iron Age, in
its trade report to-morrow, Trill say:
The flurry In foreign ore is over. It Is as
serted by importers that not n cargo is now
afloat unprovided for. Consumers could
not expect such a streak of good luck for
them to continue any length of time. Our
cablo report irom London is very interest
ing this week. Bear operators, by covering,
have advanced pig iron in leading British
centers, pig tin has been active at an ad
vance of XI, the Landoro Tin Plate Com
pany, of Swansea, owning seven mills, has
suspended, and three Welsh tin-plate firms
aro stated to contemplate erecting vt orks in
this country.
The domestic iron trade continnes gloomy
and depressed. Chicago and Detroit are the
onlv mm kets in which pi? iron has been at
all active. Pittsburg reports that tho move
ment to shut down furnaces lias como to a
stop, and it is now given out that lurnaco
men makln-r mill iron have an understand
ing to hold the price at $13. A ale of
Bessemer pig is reported at $13 7S at furnace
in the Wheeling district. A large order of
domestic ferro is reported taken at $01,
rittsuurg, an exceptionally low price. Bil
lets are weak, with no sales of importance
except near Philadelphia, where it is
rumored that large contracts have quietly
been made below $25 delivered.
Pittsburg Helps Matters Somewhat.
A heavy business has been dono at Pitts
burg in structural material, wrought pipe,
barb wire and pUtes, but at very low prices.
Carnegie's new beam mill, the finest In tho
country, was put in operation on Monday.
Wire rods are firmer, with the Joltct mill,
still out of the market, being repaired.
Amalgamated Association officials are
now at work on new wage scales for tho
coming year, but as yet it is not known
whether they will voluntarily make reduc
tions. Chicago reports large orders in sluht
for manufactured iron and steel, and better
business In steel rails. An unusually heavy
trade in barn wire is reported at St. Louts,
stimulated bv cut freight rates to Texas,
which arc to bo restored May 9. The oro
trade at Cleveland has not yet opened up
actively, but vessel charters are being made
at luw rates, and furoacemen are probably
able to shade last year's nrices on such pur
chases of ore as they are making. The ship
ping seas-on will begin with the docks well
cleaned up.
In metal tne general tendency Is upward.
The demand Tor copper has moderated, but
pi ice- are lairly Ann. Pig tin is higher, and
the consumption byHomcstlc tin plate mak
ers Is being felt In the increased volume
oi business. Pig lead is higher and more
active. The purchases or spelter, "for ex
port," have been sold here instead of abroad,
but prices have advanced in the face of re
sales. Interesting News From Abroad.
The foroign markets are reviewed as fol
lows, by cable: Pig iron warrant prices have
moved irregularly, with only a moderate
business in Scotch, but livelier trading in
Cleveland and hematites. Prices receded
early in the week, but subsequently ad
vanced to 41s Id for Scotch, 3Ss 4Jd for Cleve
land, and 4Ss lOtd for hematites. The
icaction was due to heavy withdrawals
from stores, causing "bear" operators
to cover, and creating a scarcity of English
iron, i no quantity oi tile latter in stores is
now 114 000 tons, against 121,000 tons a week
ago, making a reduction of 15,000 tons the
past fortnight. Scotch stocks have de
creased S.000 tons during tho same time, and
nmount now to 474.020 tons. Theroare now
8 Cleveland and 77 Scotch furnaces blowing.
There is a somewhat better feeling in the
steel trade, and vioik is soon to be resumed
at several barrow mills. Ship plates at 6
S are in very good demand. Holders of old
lion rails have manifested more anxletv to
si-ll.and offers of double heads were made at
2 15s f. o. b. without result.
Tin Plate. 11 orks for America.
Pig tin for piompt delivery has advanced
about XI, and the market has been active
Light stocks and moderate Eastern ship,
ments are the chief features, but operations
of leading operators figured prominently.
Consumers purchases continue light. Cop
per pi ices have averaged lower. Absence
of defini'e news regarding proposed re
striction of output and slowness of negotia
tions induced weakness on the maiket. Con
tradictory statements regarding tho Ana
conda mines have also had an advrise cf
Icct. Pnrchases for consumption are only
fair. The tin plate market has remained
quiet. Inquiries plentiful and largo lines
offering, but prices unsatisfactorv. Ship
ment, sire heavy. The Landorc Tin Plate
Company, Swansea (seven mills), has sus
pended. Three Welsh firms, it Is reported,
contemplate erecting tin plate works in tho
United States.

GRAIN GOES DOWN.

Keep Prices Down Large Receipts the
Feature in CornJuly Alone Is Firm
Hog Product Fairly Steady.
CniCAGO In spite of the fact that there
wero some bullish features in tho market to
day, wheat was weak, and the net result of
tho trading was a loss of JjjCinMayand Jo
in July, tho greater weakness in tho former
month being duo chiefly to sales by elevator
mou, who found no prospcot of -profit in
carrying charges while Way and July were
so close together. The result was that May.
which has for some time been at a parity
with July, was forced to J discount. The
weather was unfavorable nearly every
wheie. Tho Cincinnati Wee Current, how
ever, says tho crop has held its own very
well during the week.
More or less of the wheat bought yester
day on the unfavorable crop reports was
sold out to-day, increasing tho weakness.
May, whloh closed yesterday at 81c, opened
ntSlSlc: sold oft to 80c: broke toSOLfc;
July opening at 81Vc, and selling during tne
same time at S0c. 8154c and 80Jc Tho
weakness continued during the last hour.
May touched 80c and July 80e. Toward
the close the market Armed up some and
closed steady at 80c for May and S0Jc for
iuiy.
Mav corn was decldedlv weak, and at tho
close showed a loss of Uo compared with
yesterday's close. The cold, wet weather in
the corn belt was n bull factor, as tending
to lower the grading: but tho large receipts,
containing a good proportion of the contraot
grade, neutralized this: and the general be
lief that longs had about sold out em
boldened tho shorts to sell more freely, and
these offerings made the market weak
throughout the session. May opened at 4l
41Jc. against lVfe at tho close yosterday,
and with insignificant reactions sold off to
40c. closlnc at 40c. Julv was firm, open
ing Ho higher at 39Xc It touched 39Jo,
then weakened to SSjjJc, but closed uur
changed at 39c
Oats sympathized with corn, closing Ho
lower.
Uog products dull and fairly steady early.
The principal business was in changing
over irom May to July the packers and
shorts bought May and sold July. Toward
tho end of the session the packers adopted
tho tactics of yesterday and flooded the
market with offerings ot pork for July de
livery, sendlngprices down, from which
there was no recovery, the market closing
weak for tho product and steady for lard
and libs. Pork shows a net loss of 15c, while
lard and ribs are unchanged..

CITY REAL ESTATE.
A Good Time to Dispose of Unpro
ductive Central Property.
SALE OP A NORTHSIDE RESIDENCE..
Fire Acres on Squirrel Hill Change Hands
Twice Within a Week.
HEREON HILL DISTRICT BUILDING UP
From the large number of transrers ap
pearing in the court records, it is clear that
the real estate market is in good shape.
That no weakness is shown by those who
purchased two or three years ago furnishes
satisfactory evidence that the market is
strong. Foreclosures are few and far be
tween. High rents in the downtown dis
tricts are encouraging location in the
suburbs. This stimulates demand for aero
property suitable for residence purposes,
nnd enlarges the scope of building opera
tions. There is little of a speculative na
ture going on. Vacant property is being
bought for immediate improvement by peo
ple who have decided to become proprietors
instead of renters. This is a feature of the
market that cannot be presented in too
strong a light. It denotes strong condi
tions. rour Good-Slrcd Deals
It was reported yesterday evening that
115 feet on Penn avenue by 1,000 on Dallas
avenue had been sold to A. H. "Wilson, of
the East End Hotel, for $03,000. It is un
derstood the deal was oonducted by "W. A.
Herron & Sons. Black & Baird yesterday
sold a residence property in Allegheny,
presumably on Bidge avenue, for $30,000.
The late owner will remove to the East
End. Five acres on Shady lane, Squirrel
Hill district, chnuged ownership about a
week ago at 52,000 an acre. Yesterday it
was resold to a Diamond street business
mnn at a fair advance. The Carnegie Com
pany completed negotiations yesterday
evening lor about 10 acres at Duquesne.
The price was not stated.
Unproductive Central Property.
This is a good time to bring unproductive
real estate into the market. Money is
abundant, and a great deal of it is seeking
investment Nearly all the downtown
streets are disfigured by dilapidated build
ings which briug little or nothing to the
owners, and never will; they have reached
the limit ot their productive capacity. Ho
one wants to rent them, except as a final
recourse. Many owners say they caunot
afford to improve, but reluse'to sell for the
reason that they expect better prices some
time in the future. A bird in the hand is
worth two In the bush. The future is un
certain. The unexpected otten happens.
This property would sell readily at good
prices if put on the market.handsome stores
would multiply, and the business area be
materially enlarged. "While owners of cen
tral property that presents a barrier to im
provement cannot be compelled to sell, they
should not overlook the fact that with the
money obtained for their holdings they
could buy or build in some other quarter,
to their own advantage as well as to that of
the community.
linlldlng Up Herron Hill.
Biggs Bros., the Smithfield street jewel
ers, are finishing the last of about a dozen
handsome modern dwellings on Bedford
avenue, in the Herron Hill district, and are
contemplating the erection during the sum
mer of as many more on Madison avenae in
the same locality. Every house so far fic
ished has been sold. It is reported that a
"Wood street merchant is having plans
drawn for a block often middle-class houses
further out the avenue first mentioned.
These and other improvements under way
disprove the claim occasionally made that
Herron Hill is a backward quarter.
Testerdaj's Building Permits.
Ten permits were issued vesterday for 11
improvemefits, aggregating 517,500. Those
of most value are: A. 1 Ulark, brick
dwelling on Stanton avenue, nineteenth
ward, 5,000; Mrs. Bosanna Murphy, two
brick dwellings (connected) onZcech street,
Fifteenth ward, $2,800; Alex. "VVickland,
frame dwelling on Courier and Ingalls'
alleys, Twentieth ward, $1,600; George C.
McMurray, frame addition to dwelling on
Woodville avenue, Thirty-fifth -ward, Sl,
800; Charles Donnelly, brick addition to
dwelling on Fifth avenue, Twenty-first
ward, ?4,000; John Connelly, frame dwell

Xew Tork, April 28. The stock market
during tho forenoon to-day exhibited some
Increase in the amount of business, as well
as general interest In tho speculation; but
lator it becamo dnll and stagnant, while ex
hibiting a firm temper in tho main. The
professional element was more inclined to
take tho long side, especially as the loan
crowd showed an increased demand for
stocks, indicating tho character of the sell
ing during the last few days. The reduction
in the Bank of England rate, while not un
expected, was one of the strengthening in
fluence, and London was, to a moderate ox
tent, a buver of specialties.
Tho selling of Union Pacific, induced by
the failure to oust tho Gould partv from tho
directory, overshadowed for a time the cov
ering of shorts, but both movements dimin
ished rapidly and further decline was
cheoked. Tho bears are still active iu
Atchison and tho Grangers, and theso opera
tions had influence enough to check buying
in the general list, so that the early ad
vances wero in but few cases increased late
in the day. Thero was also considerable
nressure upon both Reading and Xew En
gland, but trading in the former was re
duced after 12 o'clock to tho smallest limits
it has seen for a long while, and altera slight
recovery, it remained stagnant with the
other of the list.
There was a bettor feeling in the Indus
trials, but no animation or lifo In any of
them outside of Cordage, which recovered a
small part of its late decline; but among the
low-priced shares no leature of any kind
was developed.
First prices woro fractionally higher
throughout tho list, but the weakness in
Union Pacific checked the advance after It
had gone a little farther: and while thero
was a recovery from the first decline, the
markot soon drifted int tho most intense
dullness. The hopeful feeling, howovor,
made itself felt later in the day, and there
was a partial revival of thn animation, with
a slow but steady appreciation of values,
which again brought most stocks up to and
in some cases beyond the level of the best
nrices of the forenoon.
Some of the low-priced shares at this time
made sharp movements upward, and Pitts
burg and Western preferred.the Chesapeake
and Ohio shares, Tennessee Coal and Denver
and Rio Grande preferred made substantial
gains. Tho markot finally closed dull nnd
stagnant, generally at fractions better than
last evening. A few marked gains were
made, however, and Sugar rose l4; Lako
Shore, 1, and Reading, 1&.
The total sales of stocks to-day were 247,
313 shares, including: Atchison, 18,675: Erie,
11,210; Northern Pacific preferred. 5 329; Now
England, 13.230: Reading, 61,400; SC Paul, 13,
650: Union Pacific, 31,885.
Railroad bond were more active, and dis
played again a firm temper throughont.with
lew material gains, Tho total transactions
wore $2,124,000, out of which Atchison in
comes furnished $338,0)0: Reading thirds,
$181,000, and the deferred incomes, $224,000.
All the active issues were strong.

TEAITIC IK MONEY.
Views of Experts on the General Situation
and Outlook.
Usual business and conditions prevailed
in local financial circles yesterday. In strik
ing a balance between the rosy Clearing
House reports and complaints of slackness
in trade, a good authority says tho apparent
contradiction is due more to low prices than
to lessening of activity. There was no
change In the interest rate. Bank clrarinsrs
wore $2,5SS,423 34, and balances $657,537 16.
The Bank of England reduced its minimum
rate ot discount from 2 per cent to 2.
A New Tork hanker observes: "Tho gen
eral financial situation appears good. Every
lino of business is on a safo and conservative
basis. There have been no booms in any
direction tor a long period, and while nearly
every other important country has been
suffering from great loss of crops and finan
cial disturbances, conditions here have been
steadily improving."

The time is here when large quantities of
eggs are going into eold storage, and as a
result stock is very light in the hands of our
dealers. The consumption, however, has
declined and supply is equal to demand.
Receipts of creamery and country butter arc
on the increase, and markets are reported
weak. The quality of Ohio creamery of
fered of late is scarcely up to standard. The
difference between Elgin and Ohio creamery
is now fully 5c per pound. Poultry is in
limited supply, and drift of markets is up
ward. Southern vegetables are arriving
very freely and markets show tandenclcs to
lower prices. New pea, cucumbers, and, in
fact, all things in the vegetable line are
quiet. Receipts of bananas for the week
have been heavy, but choice stock sells up to
quotations.
