Tliere is no material gain in the volume of general trade a! reported to Bradstreet's, notwithstanding Chicago and a few other Northwestern cities continue to report a volume of traffic in excess of that in April a year ago. At St. Louis, notwithstanding some draw back, spring trade has been fairly satis factory, but country produce there is bring in; only about one-half of last year's prices. Cincinnati claims a moderately larger volume of trade than a year ago, with a better demand for iron. Lumber is in ac- . tive demand at Duluth, where thaws have checked inroads upon the new iron district. Rains in regions tributary to Kansas City and Omaha have rendered country roads almost impassable in many directions. Cattle are stronger, and hogs are in better demand at the "West. "Washouts of railways at the South have checked trade in some in stances. At tha Far Sontb, Far TVcst and East. Xew Orleans reports the outlook for an increased volume of businesi better since the State election. Business is quiet on the Pacific coast, where the outlook is lor an average wheat harvest, a large crop of fruit and probably a lair yield from the vineyards. At the East former conditions prevail. Iron is no stronger, although the tendency is townrd improvement. Few among? those best informed claim to expect any advance of iron prices piior to next fall. The distribution of staples, such as cloth ins, shoes, hats and general drygoods, con tinues of good proportions, though not as largo in many instances as anticipated. Icatuerand hides aro not in quite as cood demand, but lumber is rcoie active in all mirkct". retroleum i dull, but a little stronger, and anthracite co.il is Arm, w ith lusher price Vt est. A heat price lave reacted about Jc per bushel this week, the advance hems due to tronser cables, renewed inteiet in the home market and to somewhat augmented exports. Total shipments of wheat, includ ing flour a w heat, irom both coists lor the week ending April 21, equal 3,107,000 bushels, about 2c0,000 bn-hels more than in the week befo'e. and 900,000 bushels more than In the like week in each of tho two preceding jiars. Corn Exports aid Killway Harnlnss. Exports of Indian corn this week equaled 1 010,000 bushels. Tho w eak before they were l,T42,CO0 bushels; one year ago, 2S6,000 bush els, aud two years ago, 3,530 000 bushels. iebruary's total net eaminss bv 124 rail way companies aggregated $11,717,29, more than 13 per cent in excess of February's total in 1S9L This was after a gam in Feb ruary gross earnings this year over last of nearly 14 per cent. For two months net earnings increased C5 per cent as compared withlSSL T-ast vear they were 11 percent larsrer than in 1S90 Bank cleannsrs for six days end ins April 21 aggregate $1,013,000,000, a decrease of 7.2 per cent irom the preceding week, due in part to the partial ooervanco of Friday of last ncek as a holiday. The decrease Irom the like w eek a year ago is 15 per cent. There were 206 business failures in the United States this week, against 185 last week and l,s91 in the like week last j car. Of the week's total SI per cent were of concerns having onlj $5,000 capital or Ie, while 13 per cent weieol those with fiom $5,000 to ,000caiital. The Week on Trail Street A renewal of the foreign pressure for gold, $1,500,000 having been engaged yesterday for shipment to the Continent, suppresses activ ity in share speculation at JTew Yolk. The market has already suffered from bearish attacks on tho Coal stocks, based on the prospect of a coal rate war with the Penn sylvania, and reports of a strike among the Reading's employes. A sudden rie of .New England, attiihuted to the late consolida tion rumor, was another feature. Foreign interests have been flee sellers of the mar ket, but now show a less bearish attitude. Such operations, however, combined with the scarcity of commercial drafts, account for the strength of exchange, which is at $4 &S for demand sterling. Silver has adianccd sharply on the report of an international monctarv conference nndtnatthe llritish Indian Tiexsnrv will raise a gold loan and curtail its offerings of bills on India. Vt ool is not much more active, but prices aie firmei, as tho London sales reopened at the advance. There is a fair amount of business. Xew clip domestic has been com ing forward, but only in small lots. Haw cotton has advanced Jo per pound within the week, on better consumption as well as speculative demand at home and abroad. Ilcceipts hivo declined sharply. Theie is no snap to tho general drygoods trade. Cotton goods are strengthened bv the advance In cotton. Print cloth stocks are increasing. Domestic all-wool fabrics aie selling fairly well. Blanket mills aio busy. Tho Outlook According to K. G.Dun. K. G. Dun & Co.'s weakly review says: Bad weather has interfered with the trade at miny prints and delayed seeding at the Vost. In that section, nevertheless, signs of improved distribution continue, pros pects aro bright and business is much greater than last year. At the South there is a distinctly better feeling, owing to the advance in the price of cotton, but much the greater part of the crop has been mai kcted, and general business is now but mod cratelv affected. General conditions of trade remain favor able. Merchandise exports from J7ew York lor the month show a gain of but 6 per cent, while tho imports for the month thus far exceed by 10 par cent those or last April, which were the largest ever known. Verj little change is seen in tho great in dusti les, though the demand for iron at some points distinctly improves. Themaiketat Philadelphia is disappointing, yet there is less pressure to sell pig iron: a good demand for sheets, with an advance asked at Cni cago, and structural iron is in large demand, and especially acme at tho West. Heay electncal consumption has strengthened copper, which sells at 12 cents for lake: tin Is rising at 20 cents, and lead is steady. Pittsburg Still rorging Ahead.
