rvmv THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, im'wmmm- FRIDAY, APRIL IB. , 1892. - PALACES FOR BABIES. Making Spring Improvements Tiro Local Institutions. in BEDSTEADS IN BLUE AND GOLD. Painty Eooms in the Pittsburg Hospital for Children. GRAND CLEARANCE SALE. l'lanos and Organs. TEOTESTAXT OKPHAX ISTLCM CHANGES An epidemic of house-cleaning is raging in the two cities, and charitable institutions have not been exempted from the ordeal. Ot all those institutions in the city there arc none that do better work and that are at the same time less known than the Pitts bur; Hospital for Cnildren, at the corner of Forbes street and Craft avenue. There are hundreds of poor children who n?ed atten tion that their parents cannot afford to get for them. The lady managers are aware of this fact, and are anxious that the parents shall know that here is a hospital in which the best -of at tention and medical treatment can be ob tained free of charge. At present there are only 15 patients in the hospital, and the highest number that has ever been in the wards was 17. There are four wards, each containing a dozen beds, in ue now, and as there are 1C rooms in tLe building, accom modations can be made for over 100 patients, if necessary. There are four acres of ground belonging to the hospital, and if the de mands upon the hospital outgrew the pres ent accommodations, the building would be enlarged. Miss Jane Holmes left money to found this hospital many years ago, but it was not until 1890, in June, that the present beautiful property was bought and turned to its excellent use. No Religions or Color Lines Drawn. Children from 2 to 12 years of age are eligible for the benefits of the hospital. Xo monev is taken for them, the institution being charitable in every sense. It is non sectarian, and colored children are admitted as freely as white. Surgical cases are given particular attention, there being a staff of surgeons comprising some of the best known names in the city. Many poor families can not aflord surgical treatment for their chil dren, so that this department is of in- estimable value. In addition to the hospital there is a free dispensary in the grounds, where medicine is given" every "Wednesday and Saturdav at 3:30 o'clock. The hopitable has just been painted and papered in a nc and tasteful way, and the hardwood floors are polished to such a pitch that the handsome rugs which lie here and there are almost a necessity. The general eflect is of perfect cleanliness and domes ticity. The prettv iron bedsteads ot blue and gold, with their inciting white bed clothes and soft pillows, are such as thepoor little ones occupying them would hardly find in their own squalid homes. The house, inside and out, is like any East End resi dence. One room on the first floor is a sort of a living room. There aie some beds, but a good deal of the space is given to little rocking chairs, playthings picture books and other treasures ot childhood. On the yalls are pictures calculated to please the infantile mind. There are cats on seesaws, cniiuren enjoying all sorts ot games sum mer dajs in the woods, etc Every subject Eeea-s tn h.ive been chosen with tlie idea of promoting the cheerfulness of the patients. Rehearsing Mcsin for Easter snnday. Miss Killikellv goes to the hospital every Saturday to iz, iruct ihe little ones in music Thev are studying an Easter carol, which they are to t,ing at the Church of the Ascen sion on Easter Sunday. They are progress n very well, and seem to enjoy the exercise. The matron, Mrs. MarvB. Miller, says that the singing is good for them, brighteniug them tin. To add to the general attractive ness oi the place, there are three pro iessional nures, in the reeulation costume of blue and white seersucker and dainty white Swiss caps. The board of managers is a follows: Hon M. AY. Acheson, Mrs. E. M. Perguon, Mrs. S. S. Marvin, Mr. Gee W. Guthrie, Mr. David G. Stewart, Dr. F. Le Movne, Mrs. V. D. Wood, Mrs. "ft. J. Holland, Mi-sMary Elizabeth Dawson; Mr. James H. Reed, Mr. E. Xclson Clark. The President is Hon. M. "ft. Acheson; Secre tary Dr. W. E. Halock; Treasurer, Mr. E. M. Ferguson. A number of very important improve ments hae just been completed at the Protestant Orphans' Asjlum, liidge ave nue. Allegheny. Two new pailions have been built in the plaj ground, so that the children will not be obliged to go into the house in wet weather or to remain in the sun in the heated term. The two yards Laie been paved, while on two side3 ot it is n spacious lawn. Tour rooms have been added to the building proper, and the house lias been calcimined from top to bottom, . the ceiling being white and the walls in various tints of terracotta, light blue, light green, etc A rieasant nmmer Retreat. The wainut bedsteads that have been used hitherto are replaced bv very pretty light jiuu ucuieai;s paimeu oiue ana n-mte with brais knobs at each corner, which gies the dormitories an airy appearance. The man agement have decided not to send the chil dren out of town next summer, because the home in Allegheny is as pleasant a summer habitation as could be found in the country, and is lar more comfortable than anv temporary home would be There are 168 children in the allium at present, the v.nal number bfing L'OO and ner. The children are nearlj all plump, and all ap pear to be happv "While the discipline or the a-vluni is good, the children have anv thingbuta coned demeanor. They talk irecly to visitors and are really like one Jamilv. The children march in soldierly to and from their meals, to the music of a mouth organ, pla ed in a creditable man ner by a gentleman aged about 10 years. The management is very proud of its new bathing appliances, consisting of the latest designs ot bath tubs, tile feet baths and sta tionary Tashbowl, with hot and cold water. These conveniences are such as are to be found in well-appointed private houses in Pittsburg. A reception is to be given at the asylum on Mav 22, when the children will give a musical and literary entertainment, and the house will be thrown open for the inspec tion of visitors.
