A BUSHEL OF MONEY.
Nearly a Million Dollars, in Cash and
Checks, raid to the City.
TAXPAYERS' LAST DAI OP GRACE.
Oyer a Hundred Protests Against High Tal
nations Filed.
AX IMPORTAXT COURT RULING MADE
Yesterday was the last day for 1892 when
discounts were allowed on one-half the
year's taxes on property. It will be remem
bered that Councils extended the time for
discounts becauso of the Finance Com
mittee's tardiness in presenting an appro
priation ordinance, but no account was taken
of the 15th, to-day being a legal holiday,
and consequently the taxpayers thereby lose
one of the 15 days of grace. This, however,
only applies to those who do not have bant
accounts. Any person who can mail his
check to-day, dated April 15, and get it to
the City Treasurer in to-morrow morning's
mail, will still get 5 per cent off on half his
year's taxes, but discounts will not be al
lowed any cash paid at the windows.
An immense amount of money was paid
and receipted for as taxes yesterday. A
bushel basket full of checks, ranging from
f4 to f 20, 000, -were received during the day,
and in addition more than 8150,000 was re
ceived by the clerks at the windowa.
The IVnnsyltanla Kaitroad Pnts Up.
The largest payment made during the
day was that of the Pennsylvania Itailroad
Company. Superintendent Pitcairn called
and paid between 559,000 and 60,000 lor
the company's numerous properties in vari
ous wards of the city as well as several
thousand on his own real estate.
The day's receipts, including checks and
cash, amounted to nearly 51,000,000, and
may even exceed that when counted. Last
Saturday the amount received was
$1,200,000. The first three days of this week
532S.459 43 more was received. The total
received np to date will exceed 2,500,000,
which ib about the same amount received at
a corresponding period last year and the
year belore. The largest checkreceived yes
terday was from William F. Aull, aient for
the Denny estate, for 550,180 S3. Jones &
Laughlin's check was lor 528,000. Thomas
3IelIon & Sons fent one in for 513,627 82
and one tor 84,000. which pays the taxes on
their real estate all over the city. Accom
panying the larger check Mellon & Sons
filed a protest against the valuations and
classification of certain of their proper
ties and a demand that when the court shall
have adjusted the errors of the Board of
Assessors the excess paid shall be refund
cd by the city.
A Hundred Taxpayers Protest.
More than a hundred such rrotests have
been filed by persons who have appealed
their assessments to court in order to secure
the 5 per cent discount on their September
installment. '
A ruling was made in Common Pleas
Court Xa 2 yesterday that such protests
must be respected by the city in case of a
reduction ol taxes by the court on an appeal
acainvt the City Assessors' classification or
vacation. The rule applies to those who
have already paid their taxes, with or with
out filing a protest, as well as those who
may hereafter pay before the court takes
action on theirappeals. The ruling is in
accordance with the action taken Wednes
day by the attorneys interested in appeal
cases, notice having been given the court
City Treasurer Denniston said yesterday
that in no case would he allow a discount
on taxes not mailed to him to-dav, as he
was not permitted to correct Councils' error
in not recognizing Good Friday as a lesal
holiday. "I have only 15 davs left now in
which to collect the taxes of those who only
-wish to rav the first installment." he said.
"and I will be late now in my report to the
Controller. It i do not enforce the law in
this matter my report will be further de
layed, and that I wish to avoid."
A LEGAL HOLIDAY.

A HEW FEEE BKIDGE.
Alderman McNelrney Opens Up a Dazzling
Pro&pcctus forLaTrrenceville People.
It is reported that another bridge will
span the Allegheny river. Alderman Mc
Kcirney said last night: "Yes, there is to
be a new bridge over the Allegheny, pro
vided the sewer on Fifty-second street is
constructed. As it is a certainty that the
sewer will be built, the bridge is also a cer
tainty. In fact, the charter has been
printed. Those chiefly interested in the
matter are Thomas Bailey, Conrad Lyncs
and M. Lydon. The bridge will cost 573,000.
It will span the river at the foot of Fitty-s-econd
street. The probabilities are that
at an early date it will be tree for pedes
trians." Itntan and Oliver Have a Conference.
There was considerable excitement in Al
legheny political circles last night on ac
count of ex-Senator Kutan asking for a con
ference with Martin Oliver, against whom
he has brought a number of suits on a charge
of election frauds. The last suit was before
Mayor Voegtly, and the case was appealed
to court. Mr. Oliver called at Senator
Jtutan's house last night, and the two went
to the residence of W. B. Rodgers, attorney
for Mr. Rutan. Neither of the gentlemen
could be found late last night. Mr. Eodgers
would not make any statement

KICKING 017 COMMITTEES
Northslde ConncllmenAra Dissatisfied With
Chairman Parke's New Assignments.
Considerable dissatisfaction was expressed
in Allegheny last night over the new as
signment of Conncilmen on the committees.
Councilman Rudolph said: "This is the first
time in tlio history of Allegheny that tha
Councilm&nic committees have been
changed in te middle of a, session: It was
a strange thing for President Parke to
make changes when there was no opposi
tion to him; I believe it was on account of
his delegate fight. He has also changed the
Library Committee so as to defeat Stephen
son as librarian and elect a relative of his."
Last night the new Chairman of the Pub
lic Safety Committee, Charles Simon, in
place of Simon Drum, gave out his list of
sub-committees. It is as follows:
Fire Drum, Chairman: Ilarblson, Stacey.

A BAD BUTLEB COURTS" BOY
Fights With His Teacher, Is Whipped and
Snt to Morgan za.
Ernest O. Johnson, atall, gawky boy about
5 feet 10 inches in height, and who, it was
claimed, wns tinder the age of 16 years, was
a prisoner in the jail last night, having been
placed there by an officer from Potter coun
ty, who was taking him to Morganza. The
papers deposited by the officer showed that
the boy was charged with incorrigibility.
In conversation with "Warden McAleese
the prisoner stated that the primary cause
of his trouble was a row with his school
teacher, and when asked who came off best
in the battle the prisoner dofied his cap
exhibiting a scalp wound that extended
half way across his head and contained
about a dozen stitches. The prisoner will
be taken to Morganza this morning.
Googins Tor Alternate National Delegate.
The colored Eepnblicanr. have prepared a
letter to the Allegheny county delegation
to the coming State Convention, urging the
recognition of the colored wing of the party
by making Lemuel Googins, of this city, an
alternate delegate to the Kational Republi
can Convention. T. W. Gale is Chairman
of the committee having the matter in
charge. Mr. Googins was unanimously
selected for the place by a large convention
of colored Republicans at City Hall several
weeks ago.
Alderman Hartman Convalescent.
Alderman Hartman, of the Twenty
Eeventh ward, has been confined to his
room for the last two months, his health
failing him through over-work. He is now
on the fair road to recovery, and will be
found at the aldermanic bench on Monday
morning. The alderman has been in
business for over 20 years, during which
time he has served four terms as deputy
mayor. Baring his illness he lost over SO
pounds, but hopes to regain it with interest
in a short time.
