GENERAL SPOKTING NEWS OP THE DAI
There will be a very important meeting
of the Pittsburg Cricket Club this evening
at George Tann's, Tenth street. President
Goodwyn and Secretary Matthews haTe re
solved to tender their resignations and with
draw from the club entirely. There are
various rumors current as to the causes for
the resignations. One is to the effect that
everything is not Roinjj smoothly along, but
this was emphatically denied last evening
by Secretary Matthews. During a conver
sation he said:
"Everything is all right in the club, and
Mr. Goodwyn and myselt are resigning
simply because we have not time to devote
to the club. That is the only reason for oil
resignations, and the club will undoubtedly
go along as usual. AVhen we took hold the
club was in debt and we leave it with a
balance. I will tarn over nil correspond
ence to the new secretary and help him iu
any way that I can. "V have three en
gagements pending. The Toronto team
want to come here and play us a came, we
to allow them 5200 expenses. They may be
engaged. The Chicago club wants us to go
to Chicago, but only wants to pay us 1200.
while w e paid them 5200 to come here. I
think the local players will not go to Chi
cago except on the same terms as the Chi
cagos came here. The Youngstown
club -nantr us to go there and day a game.
This may be done."
Itcgarding the prospects tor a iootball
league here next" fall Mr. Matthews stated
that in all probability there would be a
league, as there would be more Iootball
playing next tall than there has ever been.
If the English champion team come to this
country an effort will be made to try and
get them to play here. A strong team
could be got together here to tackle
them, and quite an exciting game could be
played.

The local stock market was somewhat er

Manhattan Nets for the Day the Only Im
portant Else 4. Firm Temper In a Very
Dnll Stock Market Atchison Balded
'Down 1 Per Cent.
New York, April 9. There were very few
features in the Btock market to-day, the
trading being even more than usual of late
professional, and the fluctuations in all but
a very few stocks confined to the smallest
fractions. The general temper was firm, and
the opening was made at slight gains over
last night's figures, while tho demand from
the shorts further advanced the whole list
in the early dealings. .
Thegspat featttio of the day was tho nn
nsual animation nnd sti en-jth displayed in
Western Union, which rose 1 per cent to 80,
which point it has not reached for n long
time. Manhattan kept company with It,
continuing its rise to 14 and while
neither of these were able to retain all of
their gains, they wero maintained on a
higher level than the rest of the market.
The bears attached Atchison and broke It
lfcer cent, affecting the rest or the list to
some extent and depressing prices below
theleveLof the first figures. Unimportant
gains were made by the Industrials. The
bank statementsshowed aloss of over $2,000,
000 in the surplus reserve, but this was
largely due to an expansion of loans, and no
apparent effect was had upon the course of
prices. The late trading developed a firmer
temper and the market closed quiet to dull
at Insignificant changes for the day in all
cases except in Manhattan, which is up 1 per
cent. The transactions reached 09,405 listed,
3,820 unlisted.
The total sales of stocks to-day were 103,226
shares. Including AtchUou, 9,450; Chicago
Gas, 2,055; Dolaware and Hudson, 3,000;
Erie, 4,400: Manhattan, 4.200; Northern Pa
rifle pieferred, 2,400; New Ensrland, 6,400;
Reading, 9,300; Richmond and West Point,
5,200: St. Paul. 4,660; Union Pacific, 3,006: West
ern Union, 13.700.
Railway bonds wero rather more active
than stocks, and rather heavy, though only
in the Richmond and West Point 5, whicfi
lost VA at 57, was there any los3 of note,
while Northern Pacific and Montana lsts
rose 1 to 97, and Richmond and Danville
Consolidated I to 103. The trading reached
$756,003.
The following table snows the prices of active
stocks on the New York btock Exchange yesterday.

THE WEEK IN OIL.
Improvements In Business and Prices on
BnllUh Pipe Lino Tt-porta.
The market was moderately active and
variable, as influences were good or bad.
The opening on Monday' was steady, but
later in the week the price touched a low
point, on increased production. There was
a sharp rally Saturday, on information that
the monthly pipe line iep6rt will be quite
bullish. New buyers mu'le their appear
ance, and there were signs of increasing in
terest among outsiders. The fact that there
was no oil on tap at the final bid showed
that the feeling was 11 rm and confident.
