The above position came up in an endins between Mr. Karr and the editor. A great many of tho players thought there was a draw for the blacks as the position stands. The play is neat and instructive. Checkek Editor. SEAEIGHT A WOXDER. The great checker contest between young Seariiht and McKelvie has ended in aclor ious victory for the former. He won by the remarkable score of 11 to 1 and 9 games weie drawn. The match was an important one, owing to the peculiar restrictions placed on the openings and brought out much origi nal play. The victory places Searizht among the foremost p'ayers of the world. Outside of what Mr. Feriie had said of him he was unknown to any great extent, but Mr. Fen ie's prediction has certainly come ti ue, that he bad a young man ready to take his place as champion ot icntiand when lie thought bf resigning on account of health, and in away that leaves no doubt of his abilitv, as the match jut ended, for original play, has no equal in the annals of match playimr. It now remains to be seen if Bry den, Campbell or Moir will see.k to wrest Irom him the title or champion of Glasgow, the world's gieat center for the game of draught. We could not recommend a better exeiclse for the student than to fol low the endings cloely. While we claim a knowledge of published plav is incli pensiDle, when the game is reduced to what is termed the ending, we lind the benefit ofprobleni study. As the end gnme pro gresses, if familiar with end g.ime problems, how often wo can force the plav Into an old position and be rewarded with many a win. Sometimes. whn we have the weaker "gaino, by familiarity with the Drinkwater posi tions, etc., wo can make the draw with the man short to the chagi in of our opponent, and a draw of that nature gives more satis faction than wins from the oversight or carelessness of our opponents. Checker Editor. AX EXJOTABLE MATCH. Probably tho most Interesting checker event of the season was the contest at head quarters, 93 Seventh avenue, between Bus sell and Haidy. The agreement called for 100 names, wins and dtaws to count. The first sitting lasted four hours and .50 games were played, and resulted: Hardy, 21; Bussell, 21: drawn, 3. Several times ending's might have been brilliantly terminated, but as the gentle men were "quick on the trigger," and so very enter to win, they Invariably "missed Are.' How do you suppose the fol lowing came up: Black 1, 2, 3, 8, 12, 14, 25: white 19, 20, 22, 23, 28, 28, 31, S-T Bussell re marked: "Boys, look at this." The "Heart Quartet," Seeds, Kisock, Thomas and Me Ateer examined it, Kisock saying: "There is always something new occurring in checkers." Hardy eventually drew the game. Hero is another: Black 3, 8, K26; white 12, 13, 18. This was too deep for "Davie," and with a "dog-gone-it," played 26-22 and Hardy drew without much difli cnltv. Later on this came up: Black 4, 21, K15, K25; white 30, K14, K16, K17, white to play. This one Hardy missed, and his opponent chuckled ratherjoyfully. Very soon after, however, H.ndy gave vent to a vociferous lanzh at the following which Bussell let slip away from him: Black. 3, K 34, K 36, K 20; white. 12, 29, K 4, K 15. Bussell plaved 16-13, and alter a -evens struggle Hardy drew the game. This was too good to lose, anu Mr. McAteer remarked that it should have been scoiedusa win. Mr. Seeds differed. The pieces, were reset, and the prettv point shown to the entire satisfaction of the host. This came up in the following game: Black, 3, 4, K U, Iv 19; white, 7, 11, K 2, K 10. It w as llnasell's move, and with a majestic wave of the hand, followed by a clever moppina of his brow with his forearm, lie faiily yelled: "Isn'f that a tenor!" and resigned. Previous to commencing play tho nest night, Hardy had a prolonged sitting with the veteran, B. G. McGrew, out or wliich he came with flying colors. His power seemed to have been saDpcd, nnd Bussell bad no difficultv in "running away" from him. When the score was Bussell, 17; Hardy, 10; drawn, B, Hardy was disgusted and moved an adjournment, to which his opponent kindly consented. There aro 13 games to play, but as Hardy has learned to sing "Hush a-B.ie Baby," there is no telling when the gentlemen will finish the unique con test. II. F. McAteer.
