Elite S & &- 8 THEW PITTSBURG DISPATCH, THURSDAY, APRIL 7, 1892L POISONING A PLAGUE. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. A Bussian Invents a Mysterious Compound to Do to Death AUSTRALIA'S MYRIADSOF RABBITS Hillions in It if His Expectations Fulfilled. Are IXTEEIHENTS MADE IX ALLEGHENY For rears past JTew South "Wales lias been plagued by swarms of rabbits which bare caused Incalculable damage to land and financial loss to the country. Charles Xaftaly, of Moscow, Russia, who is now in Pittsburg, believes he has tolved the problem of exterminating the pests. Mr. Xaftaly has a destroyer of rabbits and all gnawing animals coming under the head of rodentia, which he says is infallible in its deadlincss. There have been numerous devices and poisons used in the agricultural districts of Australia, but none has been found abso lutely eflective and sate. If the compound was effective it was generally too much so. inasmuch as horses, cattle and swine would also be poisoned. This would entail a greater loss to the farmer than by allow ing the rabbits a lease of life. Slow Death to Rabbits. The exterminator of which Mr. Xaftaly is ine possessor is not necessarily a poison, and furthermore will only be eaten by ani mals which gnaw, such as rats, squirrels, rabbits, etc. He naturally keeps the formula a secret, but says that the destroyer is composed ot several drugs and one foreign plant, the latter being its most vital in gredient It is highly flavored, so as to make its odor appetizing. Its cflect upon the hapless rodent wnich nibbles at it is peculiar. There is no agonizing death such as is produced Dy strychnine or arsenic, which kills its victims in a few minutes. On the contrary, its effect is slow but sure. "When the rodent has made a meal of "Crissomore," it is affected gradually. The gums and teeth are attacked first, the latter dropping out; the gums become ir ritated and refuse to perform their duty in eating, even if the victim had an appetite. In a day or so the victim is a dead rabbit. Tests Made In Allegheny City. The great feature of "Crissomore" is that horses, cattle and swine will not eat it, as has been demonstrated by numerous tests. In this one point lies the success of the exterminator, and so great is Mr. Kaftalv's confidence in his discovery that be is pie paring to go to Australia, where he nas been in communication -nith Governmental authorities at Sydney. He is now awaiting the arrival of his partner, who is at pres ent in Russia. The Colony of Sydney has since 1887 of fered 25,000 to any person who will suc cessfully exterminate the rabbits of that country without danger to other useful ani mals. The new discovery is being used at a few places in this city for experience Eake and to satisfy skeptics. At Shafer's soap factory in lower Allegheny, it has ueeii tncu wuu eminent success. Mr. Jfaltaly has a Urge batch of corre spondence from the British Consul in New York, urging him to hasten to Australia to test his discovery. Should it be a success the gentleman who owns the destrover says that no 25,000 will purchase his secret Mr. Xaftaly is a well-informed Bussian who speaks five languages.
