. Keceipts of cattle at East Liberty 'yards
were lighter this week than they have been
since the year began. The total for the
week has been about 55 carloads, 11 hereas
the recent average has been almost 70 loads.
Thouqh receipts were light there were
enough on the market to meet all de
mands, and more than enough of the com
mon and low grades. Good butchering
beeves of light weight were in good demand
at a shade better prices than last week. The
highest price paid was 55 00 for a load of
prime Indiana beeves, weighing 1,500
pounds. The owner of this load reported
that they were sold at a loss, and that he
sold the same grade of cattle a year ago at
?G 30 per cwt. Prices of good beeves are
ccrtainly.uown to their lowest level lor this
season.
Fresh cows of high grade were in light
supply this week and were promptly taken
at outside prices, while common grades
were hard to sell. Sales were reported at
545 00 per head.
The run of veal calves was the largest of
the year and price? were the lowest. There
were close to 500 head on ale Monday and
fully 200 head have arrived since Monday.
The" highest price paid was 5c per pound,
and onlv a few of the best sold at this fisuro.
Slicciv-Thcro have been all told not above
10 load on the market this week. All
offeted fonnd quick sale at strong last week's
I trices. Top price of sheep i as $6 50 and
nmbs $7 40 per cwt.
Hoss Theie were 25 loads on sale Monday
and about cirfit loads have been received
rlnce Jlondav. Top price on Monday was
$5 10 with markets slow. Top piice this
morning was S5 CO.

We report 53 cars of cattle on sale Monday
againstCO cais on Monday last week. Of
those 31 car were from Chicajio and the bal
ance :10m Ohio and Indiana. The quality
was scarcely up to an average of the past
few weeks, and the attendance of buyers
was light. The demand was slow and
there n as quite an effort to advance prices
by salesmen. Buyers, however, could not be
moved in that direction and with the excep
tion of a few lots of smooth, handy kind,
(which sold about 5 to 10c higher
than last week), markets were slow
at last week's pi ices. There is still quire

THE BULLS' OWN DAY.
The Flattering Crop Report Trom Kansas
and "Weak Cables Start Wheat Lower
Bradstreet's Statement and the Demand
for Cash May Turns the Tables.
cniCAGO The bulls had everything their
own way to-day. Wheat recovered nearly
2 cents from an early dip nnd closed with
good support. To-night all leading articles
on the list, as well as wheat, exhibited firm
ness. The wheat market started weak and
a little lower under the inflnenoo of lower
cables and a very flattering report on
growing wheat from Secretary Mohler, of
the Kansas Bureau. Tho foreign news was,
if anvthlng. morebeariBh than heretofore,
but domestic markets all seemed to show a
great deal of confident strength, notwith
standing the crop sltuation'continues favor
able. Bradstreet's showed a decrease of
1,310,000 bushels In the available supply on
both coasts; but In view of the large de
crease renorted last week in the nrlvate ele-
vntors In the Xoithwcst 1,670,000 bushels
and the 2:0,000 decreaso in the published
Ylsible.the report was somewhat disappoint
ing. Perhaps the strongest feature in the
market was the good demand for cash
wheat, including Xo. 2 spring.
As the market beenii to show its strenith
the covering of short wheat became, quite
brisk and helped materially to promote
strength. May opsned at about 7S5Kc, sold
at 7SJ7Se, split gradually to SOJe, and 12
o'cloc"k was. about SOc. After the noon hour
the market became weak on free selllns.
The demand also fell off and most of tho
shorts seemed to have been run in on tho
curly bulge. May, after selling up to SOJc,
broke gradually to 79JjJc, at which price it
held steady and closed.
Ther was a rustle In the corn t)lt during
the first and last fivo minutes or the session,
but with quietness in between. It is said
that unquestionably a large short interest
exists, and in view of the firmness In wheat
and the minors of manipulation there was
considerable disposition to cover. Mnv op
ened c h'glicr at 3i)Jc. but Improved grad
u:illy to Kc. and at 12 o'clock was about
40'c. The closing was at 40Jc sellers.
Oats were traded in liberally and tho
prices ranged higher early, but later weak
ened and the close was steady with prices
at a slight- advance, over Monday's close.
The stiength came mainly from wheat and
corn.
Hog products generally weaker on the llo
cral receipts ot live hogs and the lower
prices at the yards. The selling was free,
but the subsequent Improvement in grain
checked the downward movement.

CITY EEAL ' ESTATE.
A Site Purchased at Shadyside for a
Gilt-Edged Residence.
AN ANCIENT RUMOR WORKED OVER
Enhnrtan flapid Transit Eailwaj Stirring
Up Sonthside People.
SPECIAL FEATURES OP BUSINESS
It was learned yesterday that a transac
tion in real estate involving about an acre
and a half on Aiken avenue, Shadyside, had
just been consummated at a figure close to
821,000. Messrs. "W. A. Herron & Sons
being mentioned as agents who eonducted
the deal, they were asked for information,
but were not in a position to say anything
bevond confirming the report. It is under
stood the purchaser is a leading business
man, who intends to erect a residence which
will not suffer by comparison with the finest
in the East End.
Movements on the Sonthside.
The Suburban Rapid Transit Railway,
running from Mt Oliver out the Browns
ville road, is being extended to the city by
way of the above named thoroughfare and
South Eighteenth street. A large force of
men is at work doing the necessary grading.
A double track is to be laid and the pike
will be paved with block stone It is ex
pected that the entire work will be com
pleted within 60 days. Oir the strength of
this road and the completion ot an 8-inch
water main out into Baldwin township,
real estate lias assumed an active position.
Two ne5v plans of lots have been laid out by
Messrs. McFcrran, Succop and others.
Options have been taken on two lane tracts
01 land for subdivision at pric.es consider
ably over S1.000 an acre. Several hand
some dwellings have been started on the
Brownsville road. Mr. Steinecke will
build one of the handsomest residences on
the Sonthside. One has just been com
pleted at a cost of over ?8,000.
An Old Story Revived.
The annual rumor that one of the bie in
surance companies is looking around for a
site for an office building in this city is
again on the street, but is probably only
talk to secure cheap advertising. The same
company urged as a reason for not buying
two or three years ago that ground was too
dear. As values of central property have
stinened considerably 111 the interval the
same reason, only intensified, for not buy
ing and building exists now as was urged
against the movement then. Still, this
would be the proper tiling to da The com
pany owes much to Pittsburs, which obliga
tion it could discharge in no better way than
by expending a million or two in abuilding.
It would not only be a good investment,
apart from any other consideration, but
would also serve as an entering wedge for
other improvements of a like nature.
Bnliders Are I!n-y.
Yesterday was favorable to the builders.
Thirteen permits were issued for 18 im
provements, aggregating ?G1,G12. The
most important are: "W. G. Johnston, five
stone and frame dwellings on Highland
avenue. Twentieth ward, 32,500; Mrs.
George Hailman, brick dwelling on Shady
avenue, Twentieth ward, 816,769; Robert
Paul, frame dwelling on Pacific avenue.

Birmingham Traction Takes a Big Tumble
But Quickly Recovers Weakness
rreity Thoroughly Distributed Over the
List A Few Stocks Hold Their Ground.
The stock markotwas snrprlslngly weak
at the opening yesterday. Buyers at bottom
prices made an effort to take profits but met
with little success. The weakest features
were Birmingham and Central Tractions
Switch and Signal and Luster.
At the first call Birmingham sold down to
25. Some one needed money and let the
stock go at a sacrifice. No ono lmaglnos It
will reach so low a point again unless the
circumstances of the company should
change materially for the worse, or which
there Is no prospect.
The last call, with one or two exceptions,
was on 11 par with the others. Birmingham
rallied on sales to 2 and Manufacturers'
Gas sold up to 33, closing at bid. Luster
also picked up a trifle, as did Cable. Phila

throughout the day.

WALL STREET RUMORS
MAKE QUITE A LIVKLT STOCK MAB
KET IN SPOTS ONLY.
The Reports Affect the Values of Union
Pacific, New England and Klctimond
and West Point Foreifrn Buying a Fac
torBonds Active.
New York, April G Tho stock market to
day was more active and stronger than for
many days past, and especially in the Coal
stocks material advances were scored. The
general list, however, still remained com
paratively quiet within narrow limits; and,
while there was the usual number of stocks
traded in, the intoiest was centered in three
or four, which gave character and activity
to the whole market. Tho bears found them
selves in an uncomfortable position, for,
while theie was still considerable vulnera
bility shown In both New Ensland and Rich
mond and West Point securities, they wero
confronted in the Coalers by a determined
opposition.
There wcro the usual number of rumors
set afloat in rciard to the possible failure of
tho ltlchmond and West Point reorganiza
tion plan, and the advocates of lower values
were enabled, by creatine the Impression
that Insiders wore llqnidatlnpr in both the
Xcw England and Biclrnond and West
Point, to drivo both down J per cent in the
onrly trading, while Richmond nnd West
Point dropped anay 3 per cent to 50. The
bonds followed and weie forced down heav
ily, hut the support In tho Coalers, together
with the apparent llboial buyine; for the for
eign account, turned the scale azain, and
while a rise of 4i percent in Delnwarennd
Hudson was in progress the rest of the Coal
st cks made substantial calus, and Reading
was enabled to recoverits early losses, which
were afterward supplemented by a material
advance.
Even the weak stocks later felt tho stim
ulus, and the very heavy buying to cover
shorts served to completely wipe out tho
loss in Now England and most of it in Rich
mond and West Point. The foreign buyinfj
was again nn important laetor in the situa
tion, but only by inducing fresh buying
irom uomtstic sources, xno npwnru move
ment in tho Coalers was enchanced by some
rumors, Delaware nnd Hudson being again
put under Vanderbilt contiol, while New
England was advanced on the idea that the
bear party In the stock had made Its turn.
The principal Influence In the mnrkct,
however, was the running of the short in
terest, nnd while theie was no luck of new
buying, that interest causod tho material
gains lecordedin tho leading active stocks.
Among tho low-priced shares there werofow
features, hnt late in tho day the Flint and
Poro Marquette stocks camo into promi
nence, and the Cotton OH shares had a
maikedrise. Tho only stock in the general
list to occupy mnch attention was Union
Pacific, about w liich there i ere rumors of a
change in the management, accompanied by
some good bitving of the btock at steadilv
advanclug prices. The rest of the market
was quiet nnd held ultblti narrow limits, as
usual, though St. Paul was heavily bought
for foreign account and was remaikably
active.
