JUST LIKE POLITICS.
Lively Contest Anticipated in the
Pittsburg Presbytery
OVER THE ELECTION OF DELEGATES
To the Meeting of the General AssemMy
in Oregon Xext Month.
TETISGTO BEEAK THE BEDSTONE SLATB
ThePittsbnrs Presbytery will meet at
"Wilkinshurg to-day, and while the session
will dispose of considerable routine busi
ness, the dignified ministers will indulge
in at is expected to be a decidedly lively
contest for delegates to the General As
sembly, which meets in Oregon early in
Mar.
The Presbytery to-day will elect three
ministers and three elders to represent the
Pittsburg Presbytery, and with less than a
half dozen exceptions every minister and
elder in the organization has announced
himself as a candidate for the proposed trip
across the continent All the legitimate
expenses of the delegates will be paid by a
tax laid upon all the churches ot the nation,
and the people of Portland, Ore., have
already raised $40,000 to defray the expenses
of the visiting churchmen.
A Very Desirable Trip.
The contemplated trip, therefor, is
a most desirable one, and the con
test for delegates has been for
several weeks carried on with
the skill of well trained politicians. Letters
have been written and legitimate wires have
been pulled by tho ambitious candidate',
und Trhen tbev eet toeether to-day IS is ex
pected that the campaign will be closed
much after tne fashion of a political conven
tion. The rivalry anions the candidates Is
said to be enthely friendly, but a combina
tion is hinted at that threatens to carry the
dav.
The contest for delegates to the General
Assembly from the Allegheny Presbytery ts
raid to be much the same as that among the
Pittsburg brethren. The Allegheny Pres
bytery, however, when it meets at
Beaver on the 12th, will have the
Rev. Baussman case to dispose of,
which will likely attract more general
attention than the election of delegates.
Jlev. Baussman, who will be tried by the
meeting for heresy.it was announced yester
day w 111 make a v'gorous right for his posi
tion and his belief. lie is admitted
to be one of the brightest members
of the Presbytery. He was educated
for tho law, and it Is asserted by
his school fellows that before he entered
the ministry he was decidedly uncertain on
-religion, and when he decided to become a
minister he surprised all his acquaintances.
In a letter to a Pittsburg Mend yesterday
the Rochester minister announced that he
would not bo turned down without a con
test. Going After tho Slate.
An amusing feature of the contest for del
egates to the General Assembly developed
recently at the meeting of the Redstone
Presbytery, composed of Fayette, West
moreland and part of Allegheny county.
The people of those counties are politicians,
pure and simple, and not lnlrequently they
carry their politics into their chuiches. The
contest for General Assembly delegates
was Just as lively In that Presby
tery as in tho other organization, and
a special meeting was called some weeks
ago to dispose of some church matters. Be
fore the meeting adjourned the election of
delegates was sprung upon the gathering
and the little slate prepared by the minister
ial bosses was carried through without a flaw.
Considerable discontent manifested itself
after the meeting, but no formal protest was
entered. Last week, however, it was dls
coered that the rules required that
delegates to Wc General Assembly
shall be elected at a regular
meeting of the Presbytery and
at a specified time before the meettnsr of the
General Assembly. This rule nullifies the
election of the delegates from that Presby
tery and another set of delegates must be
elected at the regular spilng meeting of the
organization. Alreadv a lively campaign ts
in progress in that Presbytery, and it is said
an effort is being made to defeat those dele
gates chosen at the snap convention.
Withal it is clear that the Presbyterian
mniSers in Western Pennsylvania are mix
ing a little politics with their religion.
Birmingham Motormen Complain.
Tbemotormen on the Blrmlnsbam road
are complaining ot the inconvenience they
are subjected to by the people. They say
many people congregate along the street
an d when the car stops do not get on. Then
there are other people who do not signal the
cars to stop and fllo a complain because
they do not get on. This is especially ag
gravating from the fact that the mctorman,
who makes 11 trips a day, has 231 regular
stops, besides other ones where he is signaled.

A Good Modern Fable.
A man not a hundred miles from this city

the stranger. "But which town?" "Follow
your nose". The man In anger turned away,
when the stranger called after him, "That's
right; keep headed that way." "Why did
you not tell me that in the first place?" "Be
