GENERAL SPORTING NEWS OF THE DAY
There is considerable interest being
shown in the ball games scheduled between
the local League club and the teams of the
County League. The contest on Saturday
st Exposition Park proved that, and doubt
less to-day's game between the "Wilkins
burg team and the home sluggers will be
just as interesting. Tne Tarentum team
play to-morrow and the three games will go
toward showing the comparative merits of
the leading County League teams this sex
son.
The game Saturday is proof that the
local amateurs are not to be ignored and
that they can make matters quiet warm for
the big League people. The officials of the
"VYilkinsburg club think they have quite a
good team, and to-lay's game will test them
to some extent, although it is very early in
the season.
Very Good Itatteries.
Gardiner and Smith will be the "Wilkins
burg battery and very likely Galvin and
Eliret will pitch for the local team and
Miller and Mack catch. Last evening
Manager Buckenberger had not definitely
made up his mind regarding the make-up of
Lis team, but it may oe that Eaymond and
Whitney will be gi'ven a try to-day.
President Temple is satisfied with the
showing of his players so far, but of course
he expects them to get into much better
lorm between now and the 12th inst. He
ery wisely argues that if they work every
dav as thev should do, they ought to be in
first-class trim. A few of the players are
all right already and the president and the
manager know who are not up to concert
pilch.
.About MacU's Case.
ilack has not signed yet, but it is ex
pected that he and Presfdent Temple will
have a conference to-dav. It is understood I
ttat there if only SJ50 difference between
them and Mack naturally is holding out for
that amount. An official of the club last
evening said: "I know we desire Mack to
submit to a good sized reduction in salary,
but he should bear in mind that last year
circumstances enabled him to squeeze out of
u an abnormallv high salary. "We do not
ish to squeeze him as tight and we w ant
i act fairly."
On the other hand Mack claims that the
reduction demanded from him is greater

nher players and he states that he wants
nlv to be dealt with as the club has dealt
with others.
To-day's game will commence at 3:30 and
only 30 cents will be charged for admission
to the grandstand.

The days immediately preceding and fol
lowing the 1st of April rarely yield large re
sults in trade lines. In produce circles tho
trade of the week past has been very quiet,
and volume is reported smaller than the
previous week. The price list lias under
gone few changes. Among the marked
features of the week were the heavy re
ceipts of poultry and bananas. For a month
or more "poultry has been in scant supply,
and markets were Arm at high prices.
In the early part or the week large quan
tities were dumped onto our markets by the
Ohio river steamer boats, and prices at once
declined about 20 per cent. The high prices
here ns compared with Cincinnati markets
had the effect or bringing large quantities
to tills city, which in ordinary times would
have gono in the other direction. The Big
Saudy Valley, which properly is within the
Cincinnati district, emptied large quantities
of its poultry into Pittsburg. Pricesof but
ter and eggs have not materially ohanged
here in the week past.
In Cereal Lines.
It will be seen by reference to home mar
ket column that receipts have been unusu
ally large for the week. Tho general drift
of prices has been toward a lower level.
Hay and flour are particularly quiet, and
prices are lower than they were a week ago.
The opportunities for bull movements in
cereal lines have been exceedingly rare all
the oast season. Said one of our leading
flour Jobbers in an interview to-day:
"Tho flour trade has upset many nice
prophecies made last fall. We were told
that the European demand on account of
short crops in the eastern half of that con
tinent would absorb all the American sur
plus of wheat and flour and that wheat
would go to $1 23 per bushel by this time.
Somehow, tho people across the water have
managed f.o keep soul and body together so
tar without calllnir out oar great surplus.
Instead of going 25 cents: above the dollar
line, wheat is 10c to 15o below this line. The
fact is that the European demand has been
disappointing. The great yield of last sea
son at once shows itself when an attempt
is mado to raise prices."
Hides and Calfskins.
Heavy steers' hides are dull and slow at
tbe decline noted a week ago. This is the
season when long haired stock with a large
accumulation of dirt comes to the front
Buffs are barely steady, and calfskins are
active and Arm at old prices. Sheepskins
are in fair demand at unchanged prices.

Tho Boston correspondent of the Chicago
Hide and Leather has this to say ot the out
look; "In spring and summer wear, on which
most factories are running, there is more or
less activity. Jobbers and retailers are
anxious to receive their goods and pushing
for them. While some manufacturer-, are
quite busy, others again show signs of slack
ing up a little. There are in Brocton,
Marlboro and Worcester county, factories
rushed to their full capacity. In Lynn and
xiavci inn, makers ot women's goods snow
no decrease of activity. Slipper trade is quite
brisk of late, an improvement being noticed.
Shipments of shoes to points outside of Xew
England, the past week, amounted to 74,301
cases against 6S.3S0 for the previous week,
and 78 401 for tho corresponding week of last
vear. Total shipments since Januaiv 1, 714,
727 cases against 756,223 for like period in
1SJ1."

A Bad Beginning bnt a Good Ending Price
1 Moves Up.
The market opened weak and showed a re
tiring disposition until the close of the
month, reaching a very low point. When
March went out and switching over to May
had been completed, there was a sharp rally,
and the last price was 2c better than the
first. The strength came trom two sources
a disposition to buy and scarcity ot sellers.

SATURDAY'S PRODUCE MARKETS
CHICAGO Yesterday the trade in every
pit faltered almost from start to finish, and
compared wKh Friday evening, wheat is
off lic, corn c and pork 15c. The strength
which characterized the wheat market Sat
urday nearly all evaporated during the
night. The absence of the expected cold
wave was also a. disappointment, and all
crop advices were quite bearish.
There was disappointment in the provis
ion trade because the stocks did not show as
much decrease as manv had been looking
for. That and the depression in grain cir
cles were the reasons assigned for the heavi
ness. Tho best prices of the day "were made
at the start, and very little recovery from,
the lowest prlees prevailed at the close.

Noted Fluctuations.
Xew York, April 2. The stock market was
unusually active to-day for a Saturday, but
nearly one-half the business done was in
Reading, and if the trading in New England
be also subtracted from the total there re
mains but the usual quiet business in the
rest of tbe list. Liquidation was in order
this morning, and this gave encouragement
to the bears to sell tbe active stocks vigor
ously in, order to uncover possible stop
orders on the decline. This was, in some
measure, successful, and the losses estab
lished in the leading shares extended to
about 2 per cent before any material reac
tion was seen, and that occurred Just before
the close.
' The opening of the market was made gen
erally at small fractional losses from last
night's prices: but New YorE Central was off
1 per cent, and the pressure to sell became
immediately so heavy that extreme activity
marked the dealings, while prices all along
the line sold away rapidly. Reading and Xew
Enzland, however, wore still the leading
weak points, ns well as the leading active
stocks. Sncar was 'the only one showing
any comparison to them in either respect,
but the whole list shnred it) the downward
movement, though.as usual, tbe fluctuations
in most of the list were confined to frac
tional amounts.
Louisville and Nashville was also con
spicuous for its stubborn strength on a light
business, and after a slight loss reacted and
closed higher. Reading, after opening un
changed at 54. retired to 53, but in the
late rally, which was stimulated by tbe fa
vorable nature of tbe bank statement, it re
covered all or its early loss and finally closed
only a small fraction lower. The other Coal
stocks followed their leader closely; but
Lackawanna was an exception, and failing
to rally with the others, it scored tbe only
material loss for the day. Now England
fluctuated in the same way and over about
the same range, dropping from 42Jto40,
closing at 41. The whole list, with the
single exception noted, responded to the late
rally and the final changes are generally in
significant declines, with a few small ad
vances, while Lackawanna is down i. per
cent. The close was lairly active and firm
at the rally.
Railroad bonds were in no way as ani
mated or as interesting as stocks, and while
$570,000 changed bands, there was no special
activity among the speculative issues nor
fluctuations of moment. A firm tcmnur
marked the dealings, but no final change of
note occurred.
