jfBOGS iCTiVE AT AnYANCED PEICES
Omen of The Dispatch, )
tr PlTTSBCBQ, MOSTDAY. March It.
There were 73 loads of cattle on sale at the
East Liberty Yards this morning, against CO
loads last Monday and 80 loads the previous
Monday. More than one-half of to-day's
offerings were from Chicago. The balance
were from Ohio and Indiana. Quality of
cattle on sale this morning was scarcely up
to late average. There were no strictly
prime beeves on sale, and the proportion of
good butcher beeves was small as compared
with the total. Buyers were present in
light force, and the few on hand made the
most of their opportunity in bearing markets-
The bear movement was favored by
the large run and low quality of oflerings.
So lar as could be learned there were no
sales above $1 50 per cwt, and yet prime
beeves are worth above ?5 00 in" Chicago.
The general range of markets tas 15o to 2oc
per cwt, below last week's range, and at the
decline trade was draggy, with the prospect
at noon that all would not find purchasers.
More Good Cows on Sale.
Fresh cows were in larger supply this
.week tnan last, and quality of those offered
thowed improvement. There were more good
cows ou sale than for weeks past. Sales
were reported at 140 00 per head, and the
range was S25 0040 00. Calves were in
light supply and markets were active and
firm with 6 c as the top price.
Sheep Ueceipts were larger to-day than
a week ago by about five carloads. There
were on sale at the opening of markets 2)
loads. Quality of offerings to-day as not
up to what it was last Monday. "Notwith
standing larger receipts markets were active
and strong at last u eek's prices on all good
grades. Top price of sheep was Cc per tb,
and ot lambs 7a While there were sales
last week above these prices, it was because
of suer:or quality of oflerings a week ago.
There were about 25 loads of hogs on sale
when markets opened this morning, against
15 loads the previous Monday. Notwith
standing increased receipts, markets were
firm, with Philadelphia! selling 10c per cwt
above prices a week ago. Top price was
?5 35, and at this price markets were active
and linn.
At the Allegheny Yards.

CHICAGO Wheat was rather firm In the
early trading, hut the market broke later,,
becoming very weak and closing with a loss
or lo compared with Saturday's last fig
ures. The early firmness was duo to the
better prices at Liverpool and the cold wave
which covered most of the wheat belt West
and Southwest. The markets generally
showed an advancing tendency. The local
feeling was for a time rather bullish. Every
prospect of a decrease in the visible supply
caused very little selling pressure, while
snorts showed a disposition to cover and
secure profits or protect themselves against
possiblo loss. Late continental cables, how
ever, came in weak, and warmer weather
being reported as probable, the demand fell
off and the selling became more liberal. The
export movement from New York was light.
Under these influences the market became
weak and sagged of materially.
On this break some of the short sellers on
the early market began to take profits, and
there was some reaction. Just before noon
there seemed to be a big rush to sell, which
quickly broke the price lo from the top
figure. This was attributed ton statement
that the woild's shipments for European
countries tor the pat week were 7,130,000
bushels, against 5,460.000 the week before.
Fears of anti-option legislation by Congress
this week was also a weakening lactor, and
the feeling continued to the close. May
opened at S7K87Ji against SJc at the
close on Saturtiay; sold to 88c; broke to87Uc;
milled to STJic; broke to S7c; advanced. to
67Kc; dropped toSSc; rallied to S7c: Droke
to and closed weak at 86Vc.
Corn was quiet and steady, bnt with the
feeling rather weak. The situation contin
ues to be rcsrarded as bearish, and there
were free offerings of long property and
some short selling, the buying being mostly
to cover sales and secure profits. Cables
were weak, and as the day progressed w eak
ness in wheat was sympathetically felt. May
opened Jc lower at 0c, and with immate
rial rallies sold down to and closed at 39 a
Oats sympathized closely with corn, and
on a quiet market closed "Jc lower at 29Ji5
lor May.
Hog products decidedly weak and lower.
The receipts of hogs were 4,000 head more
than expected and prices at the yards were
1015c lower. This started free soiling and
pork fell from $10 77K early to $10 57; re
acted some, but weauened" again, going to
$10 oijand closing at $10 55, against $10 87
at the close on Saturday. Lard closed 10c
lower and ribs are 15c off.

FEATURES OF TRADE.
Another Sale on Penn Arentie In
volving a Sine-Story Building.
FORECAST 0F-THE M0NEI MARKET.
Local Stocks Begin the Week With Fair
Sales and Strong Trices.
OFFICE AND STREET NEWS 1ND GOSSIP
Another deal in Penn avenue property
was consummated yesterday.' Black &
Blair sold for G. J. Young, No. 815 to T. A.
and K. G. Gillespie for 544,000. Mr. Young
bought it a short time ago from Dr. Dake
and made a good thing on the turn. The
property consists of a lot 22x180 feet, with
a good three-itory building. The purchasers
will immediately begin the erection of a
nine-story business house, as will also Mr.
Harvey Childs, who recently purchased
through the same agency the adjoining
property, also owned by Dr. Dake. Two
nine-story buildings, contiguous and uni
form in appearance, will add vastly to the
business facilities oi that part of the ave
nue, and be a stimulus to other owners.
A Change Impending.
A change in the'financial situation is
about dne, and that it will be for the better,
so far as general trade will be affected, no
one seriously doubts. On this subject a re
cognized authority says: "April settle
ments will naturally cause increased de
mand for money from the country banks,
as the period mentioned is settling time iu
a number of States, and bankers in those
sections have imfornied their correspond
ents in New York that they are likely to
withdraw the bulk of their deposits from
the 1st to the ,15th of April It goes
without saying that any appreciation in the
rate for money in the street would be likely
to unfavorably affect the market price of
certain specialties which'are .now enjoying
a conspicuous place in the current specula
tion."' Bnt at the same time it would de
note a better commercial demand for funds.
Considerable of the money to be thus with
drawn will enter into the channels of trade
and not be- returned to the banks. It is
just as well to recognize the fact that there
soon will -be a decided change in the money
market.

Condition ot the Coal Trade.
According to Philadelphia advices to the
WdU Street Neva, the coal trade the past week
did not show any sign of increased activity,
although the shipments for the previous
week reflected an increase -of 102,552 tons,
and for the year to date an increase of 344,
682 tons as compared with the same period
last year. These figures indicate that, with
the slow demand usual 'at this time of the
year, the stocks at tide-water are increasing.
Notwithstanding these facts, however, very
little or no cutting of prices is reported.
The demand for manufacturing sizes con
tUues brisk. Keports from the coal regions
are to the effect that "several large collieries
have suspended operations for the present.
The Schuylkill region is producing at about
two-thirds rate.

A New York bond specialist says: "The
recent slackening of the investment demand
has been succeeded by a renewal of 'active
buying. The failure of the money market
to display a hardening tendency has nat
urally brought institutions back to the bond
market, and the past week presented as its
feature a wholesale inquiry for bonds of a
select class. Prices were accordingly steady
for the better grade of securities, while some
special movements affected the lower-priced
issues." There is a good market for Pitts
burg street railway bonds, and they mani
fest an advancing tendency.

There was no hurrah to the trading, but the

A QUIET SHARE MARKET.
CONSIDERABLE ACTIVITY 'WrrH FEW
I31POKTANT CHANGES.
Chicago Gas and Lake Shore Are the Weak
Points Quite a Heavy Trade in Stocks
Connected With Rumored Deals Most
Changes Are Advances.
New York. March 14. The dealings In the
stock market to-day were neither large nor
Important, and while Reading during the
forenoon was unusnally active, its (advance
was In no way in conformity with the
amount of business done. The interest in
the market was confined to a few stocksj
among which Reading, Lackawanna, Rich
mond and West Point, Tennessee and the
Susquehanna and Western preferred were
most prominent, the rest of the list being
traded in small amounts and the fluctua
tions confined to the smallest fractions.
Tho opening was lower, except In a few
cases, Tennessee Coal being up per cent
on the absorption of the Immediate rival;
but there was selling of Sugar on
a large scale until the announcement of the
application of the companv to list $ 5.0O0.0O0
new stock to be Issued In the acquirement
of new properties. A full rally Immediately
follon ed and something more was gained.
Tbere were two impoitant weak points in
the list. These were Lake Shore and Chi
cago Gas, though each lost a material
amount on very light trading. Among late
dvances, one in Missouri Pacific was very
marked, but the market failed to display
any general tendencv in prices, and the
movements, such as they were were
throughout of the most irregular character.
The advances in the Coal stocks induced
free realizations toward the final dealings,
but the most part of the advances were re
tained, and the bnying by Insiders helped to
make the downward movement a short one.
The close was quiet and firm, generally
at insignificant changes fiom first pricesjx
while the active shares were generally at
close to the best prices of the day. The
final changes-were unimportant, except in a
few cases, and among these sugar is up 1J-J
and Missouri Pacific 1 per cent, while Chi
cago Gas is down 1, and Lake Shore V.
Tho total sales- 01 stocks to-day were 370,
184 shares, including Atcbison,, 4,915: Dela
ware. Lackawanna and Weitern. 3,500: Erie.

.roini, s,804; St. rani, jt.seu; union jracinc,
4,612; Western Union, 6,922.
Railway bonds were quiet for all except
the Richmond and West Point issues, and
tho Readings and like stocks showed no
decided tendencv of prices in either direc
tion, though the Richmond and West Points
were strong. The Reading bonds were
traded in within narrow limits with the re
mainder of the list, and though the temper
was nrm no important cnanges resulted.

Country Peoduce (Jobbing Prices)
The untimely cold weather this morning put
a quietus on trade. This proved to be em
phatically a blue Monday to produce com
mission merchants, the most of whqp had
little to do but hug their stoves. Receipts
of egga by the Ohio Valley were not so
heavy as anticipated, and this, with the
frosty weather, stiffened but did not advance
markets. Price at Cincinnati this morning
was llc per dozen, and less 'than lc per
dozen will bring eggs from there to this
city. A day or two of mild weather will,
no doubt, bring eggs to 12c per dozen. Fruits
and vegetables are dnll and slow at old
prices. Maple syrup is in bountlfnl supply,
and drift of markets is downward. Tropical
frnits aie firm, Florida oranges particularly
so on account of their scarcity.
