to conic in uic;. Operators are now drlllfn?
in territory which they would not touch
lact r.ill. as a well which did not start off

the jrrratest games of chance In existence,
nrt especially in the McDonald Held, where
eerv man believes his well wilt beacusher
until" it is thiough tho sand and proven
otherwise. Tins Is one reason why so many
new ndN are beinp drilled at present.

OPERATORS STILL NERVOUS.
Grains Still Affected by Fears or Anti
Option, bnt In a Leas Degree Some
Strength In the Early Part of the Dayt
Succeeded by Weakness.
CHICAGO Though less sensitive than
yesterday, the wheat market was, neverthe
less, quite nervous to-day and subject to
numerous small fluctuations, with one or
two tolerably wide ones, but, on the whole,
the changes in price were not so violent as
those or the preceding day. At the close
values were unchanged in comparison with
yesterday. While the market for both grains
and provisions was undeniably still unfavor
ably influencedbythe threatened anti-option
legislation, it was not so thoroughly domi
nated by it as it had been for the two days
preceding. Tho early feeling was strong,
bnt tho feeling soon became vigorous. Later
some strong cables from Paris turned tho
market again, but the improvement did not
hold. During the last hour, the feeling was
dull until the close, when there whs sharp
buying. To-morrow Is a holiday Abraham
Lincoln's Birthday and there was a smart
rally.

Corn showed a good deal of the firmness
at the start, largely due to the better tone
in wheat, and Mav sold from 41 to 4!c;
but there was not much activity, and hold

pending le-islation, deemed it a favorable
time to clo-e cut, and sold freely: These

narrow fluctuations, and the close was
steady at 42JjC, the same as the closing price
ofyesterday. , ,
Oats were quiet and easy, fluctuating in
sympathy with corn and closing at un
changed prices.
Hog products were a little stronger early,
but soon weakened on tho ample receipts of
hogs, and tho weaker prices at the yards
ruled steady during the last hour and closed
easy at immaterial reductions from yester

WALL STREET'S BIGGEST DAY.
TUB BEADING DEAL MAKES THE
LARGEST TRADING OX RECORD.
Tho Leader Scores a H'et Gain or 8 Per
Cent During the Day Jersey Central
Jumps 8 Per Cent Ontario and West
ern Also a Boomer.
Xew Tork, Feb. 1L Tho stock market to
day was an exceptional one in every respect,
and in point of activity and the extent of
the advance scored, was entirely unprece
dented. Less than 40 stocks show more than
100,000 in the transactions, and notwith
standing the enormous trading in Heading
during tho last four days its total to-day was
over 500,000. Tho gains were still-on an
equally large scale, and the extromo fluc
tuation of Jersey Central on a comparatively
moderate business was 8J. owing to ine
interest in the leading shares, the low-priced
specialties were entirely neglected during
the day. .
Tho market opened with great activity
and at materially higher figures in most
cases, Readinir being up 2i per cent, and the
crowd on thefloor waiting lor the sound of
the gavel was the largest ever seen in any
one hour since the foundation of the Ex
change. The excitement.was intense, and
tho trading in the stock for the first quarter
hour reached considerably over 100,000
shares. The price rose steadily in the face
or the heavy realizitions to 64. at which
point it halted and went bacjc; but in the
late trading 64 was touched and tho stock
closed with a net gain of S percent at GIJ.
Jersey Central was mora rapid in its move
ments, being rushed up fiom 130 to 13S, and
it closed at 137 with a gain of S per cent.
Delaware .and Hudson were raised more
rapidly in tho late trading and closed at its
highest figure, ls6, with a gain of 5. while
Lackawanna, which was especially sluggish
in the forenoon, was advanced sharply at
the same time, rising from 157 to 1G3, but it
closed 2 per cent lower with a gain of only
4 per cent New England was very largely
traded in and rose from 48 to 56, and
closed at 6 with a gain of 4j.
The most marked reature was the sudden
extreme activity and strength in Ontario
and Western, one of tho rour stocks whose
sales reached over 100.000 shaies, and its
price was raised from 19' to23, and its final
gain was 2 per cent. Erie, St. Paul, North
ern Pacific prererrca and Atcmson among
tho railroad stocks, and Chicago Gas among
the Industrials, were especially active. The
last named was especially strong tor a time,
crossing SO, but failed to hold the improve
ment. Bock Island was the weak point in
the market during the forenoon, but it fully
recovered its loss later and closed un
changed at 9L
The general list was comparatively ne
glected and fluctuated itliln narrow limits,
in marked contrast to the few leaders, in
which sales on the bulges led to sharp de
clines, but were always followed by equally
sharp rallies. The close was strong and
confident at practically the best figures, an.d
was made on an extremely large volume of
business.
Total sales of stocks to-day were 1.437,442
shares, Including: Atchison, 23,915; Chicago
Gas. 42,C?5; Chicago East Illinois preferred,
1,635; Delaware and Hudson, Delaware and
Western, 3,693; Erie, 153,890; Louisville and
Nashville, 26,150: Missouri Pacific. 4,000:
Xorthwestern, 7,270; North American, 5,917;
New Jersev Central, 11.095; Xorthern Pacific
preferred, 40,690; New England, 153.665: Reading,-57?,945;
Richmond and West Point, 8,770:
St. Paul, 53.850: St. Paul and Omaha, 3,450;
Onion Pacific, 16,563; Western Union, 4,710.
The railway bond, market showed the
same general characteristics as tho share
list, and, with enormous transactions in tho
leading issues, the grand total was run up to
an unpiecedeuted figure. The strength in
those bonds, however, failed to stimulate
any very marked gains in the rest, as a
strong temper prevailed .all through tho
session. The third incomes alone failed to
make a handsome advance for the day, and
the firsts are up 3, at 78, and tho seconds
5, at C9.
The following table shows the prices of active
stocks on the Xew Tork Stock F.xcliange lester-daj-.

Country Produce Jobbing Prices
The high price of; egfis the past few days
has had the effect of stimulating demand.
Tennessee eggs are coming in freely' under
the influence of higher prices, and markets
are lower than they have been for the week
past. Our egg quotations are reduced in ac
cordance with sales reported. Choice cream
ery butter is steady, and country rolls are
firm at quotations. Cheese is firm enough
to go higher. Fruits and vegetables are as
they have been for weeks past, dull and
slow. Potatoes, onions and cabbage are in
supply above demand, add markets are
favorable to buyers. Tropical fruits are in
bountiful supply and markets are weak and
