A Conference Held Withcnt ETen Approach ing an Agreement. MATDKES OF INDUSTRIAL IKTEREST The 5C0 men employed in the Moorhead JicClcane Company's Iron Works at Soho, are'waiting on the order to strike. They think they have a grievance, and plenty of wnd to back it The trouble wax caused by the introduction of the check system last Monday. Under this new order of things a man must procure his little chip be fore he can go to work. "When hiiJabors are ended for the day he carries his piece of brass to the office and is cred ited with one day's ray. Heretofore, ac cording to (he officials, there has been a sort of a go-a-you-pleae schedule in force. If a man was a couple of hours late it was all right, and when a certain amount of work was done he could go home. This was ended with the check system, and now when the man completes bis task he hza to lay around the mill until it is time to cash np. The employes ol the open hearth steel department u ere ilie first to rebel against the new system and are now on a strike. If their demands are not satisfied the whole mill will come out. Yesterday a committee from that department watted on Manager Miller and held a Ions conference with him, but could not cosnu to term"!. The men will hold a meeting Saturday night, or possibly sooner. In the meantime the hearth de partment ill remain Idle from what could be learned j esterday. A Disimtch reporter called at the office and tried to engace Manager Miller incon vrition, but that gentleman, with much gesticulation, declared he had too much respect to talk to a reporter. He, however, lost his respect long enough to say the men were trying to run the mill, and it was not going to bo that way. He said the check system would still be used, as he thought lie had a right to know nhen the men worked. The Amalgamated officials professed le norance of the whole affair beyond what they had heard in a gossipy way. .Manchester Cases Adjourned. Some of the suits in connection with the strike on the Manchester Traction line were heard before Alderman Gnpp yesterday afternoon. George A. Galvin was held for court under $300 bail on a charge of mali cious mischief, it being alleged that he threw stones at tlie company cars. Gust Apt and Frod Arch, charged with riot, were placed on trial, but owing to the absence of sonic ol the witnesses for the prosecution, their cae was continued until to-morrow altcrnoou. A Quiet Day on the Road. George B. Hill, of the Pittsburg, Allegheny and Manchester Traction Company, saidlast evening tbat yeoterday had been the quiet est dav on the road since the strike began, and more passengers had been carried than any day since the men went out.
