"Markets opened blow- on Monday morning with 54 i"i as top price of Philadelphias. Later on there was an improvement and sales were made at 54 75. Tops would have brought 54 SO on Tuesday, if there had been auy on sale. This morning there were only a half-dozen loads ou sale and markets Were strong. Sheep "Receipts about the tame this week as last, the total being t5 car loads. Markets were weak and a shade lower. Good stock held up close to last week's prices, but common and low grades were 10c fit 15c lower. Top price of sheep J5 50 and lambs SG 50 per cwt. A Livestock Finn's Review. Following is report of week transactions and prices by William Holmes & Co.: We report 95 loads of cattle on sale Mon day, made up or 40 loads from Chicago and the balance were principally from Ohio and Indiana, which were in the main common to medium grades and below the late gen eral averase in quality. There were hut few irood to prime steers offered and but lit tle demand or inquiry tor anything above good butcher cattle. One load 'of prime L550 steers sold for 5c, which was about 20c less than such would have sold for auy time this season. In fact, all grades were ex tremely slow sale at 15c to 25c per cwt. lower than any time this winter, and unless there is quite an improved demand soon and lighter receipts on all of oar public markets we cannot look for any substantial improve ment in prices this winter. The companies which handle dresed meats appear to be paining strength all over the country. Wo quote prime to extra beeves at 4Jc to 5c; good medium, 4Jc to 4c: fair to good. 3jj0 to 4c: common, 3c to 3Co: bulls and cows, 2c to 3J-Xc; stockers, 2c to 2c; Iresh cows and springers, $20 to S40 per head. ReceiDts of Iiors were liberal on Monday and a dull opening, but as the demand was quite equal to the supply, the market closed firm at 5s to 10c advance from the opening prices. Tnrn Bears for a Time, bnt Final Df cllnes Are Net Very Heavy. CHICAGO Wheat wavlnll anli eak at the start this morning. There was no fresh war news to stimulate it and cables were rather easy, with domestic mai kets tending downward. Speculation was dull, with the offerings generous, and'tho tonoof trade was for a time unmistakably bearish. A good many bulls of yesterday, who had carried property over, notwith standing yesterdav's weakness, seemed to feel they had made a mistake, and sold freely to-day. The report of Secretary Mohler, of the Kansas Board of Agi ieulture, estimating la t year's ciop at 5,000000 bush el more than was estimated by the Govern ment Statistician, and putting tne acreage for next vcarat airincrease of 2-1 percent, helped afong the depression, as did private cables quoting pi ices lower. Mnv opened unchanged at OlJc, and gradiiallv.soldoffto913Jc: but at this point the news became more encouraging, and the maiikct turned. Minneapolis reported more export buving there, with 50 OOO-bushcls al ready taken. Secretary -Mohler, in an answer to a private dispatch, denied the statements attribntea to him. Finally came Jlradstrect's rcnort showing a decrease on both crasts for the last week of over 3,000,009 bushels and private cables also became more favorable. For a time there was quite a scramble to get back the wbeit ddmped early, and May rose easily to 92c A large amount of long wheat came out on the break which followed, May going down to t0Jc, and the close was easy at 91c. Corn was quiet to-day, but was rather firm during the lorenoon on good buying by one or tw o prominent houses and some covering bvshoits. Mavoponed unchanged at 40c: advanced to 40c; weakened some in the afternoon, and closed steady at 40Vfic Oats were firm on good covei ing by shorts and better outside demand. Offerings were light. The close shows prices unchsnged. Hog products were easier on the larger re ceipts of hogs than expected and lower prices at the yards. There were some weak rallies during the session, but the general tendenev was downward, and the close was at or near the bottom. Yes terday he was offered a bonus of $1,000 for the property by a new firm wanting to start business iu'tha't locality. A Movement at Sharpsburg. A land and improvement company, com- Sosed of local capitalists, has been formed y Sloane & Co. to purchase and buiid up a tract of land just above Sharpsburg. con sisting of about 75 acres, but negotiations are making slow progress on account of the exalted views of the owner. A little con cession ou his part, it is believed, would re sult in a deal at once. As a sample of values in that locality, another tract, not quite so large, about 20 minutes' walk lroni the railroad, is held close to fSOO an acre. Should negotiations ultimately fall through the company will turn its atten tion to some other quarter. A Change ot Base. Several prominent Allegheny City fami lies have about made up their minds to pull np stakes and colonize in what is known as the Squirrel Hill district, Twenty-second ward. The matter has been kept very quiet, but it leaked out yesterday somehow. Their names are known, but are withheld for the present. This information confirms an intimation to the same effect in this column, a few weeks ago. Having practi cally unlimited means it is needless to say that any improvements they may make will be equal to the best architectural achieve ments in the entire East End. One reason assigned for this contemplated exodus is that the return to coal by many of the mills' and private families is rendering their quar ter of the Northjide unpleasant for residence purposes. Kip Tan Wlnkle' Wake-Up. The people of the Northside beyond Ob servatory Hill are awakening to the fact that in the matter of roads affording travel ing facilities, and the consequent apprecia tion of values, they have been practically asleep for years. The fine territory reached by the Perrysville road would afford beau tiful sites fof nice residences were there good roads upon which to travel. Some hope of relief is felt to be at hand, as the City Engineer is endeavoring to establish a grade acceptable to a majority of the prop erty holders. From the natural lay of the ground it is impossible to please eyeryhody. One side of the avenue being high and the other lojv, there must be a compromise in order to have any improvement at all. So long as the present condition of this avenue exists there can be no permanent advance ment. Upon the success of the present movement depends the development of the virgin territory of the hill district. Had this been done years ago the East End would not have got ahead of Allegheny as it has done. This is really a matter of pub lic concern, and the citizens generally should take a deep interest in all that per tains to the improvement of this great sub urban artery. i Business News and Gossip. INSURANCE COMPANIES SAID TO BE BDTING LACKAWANNA. Louisville and Nashville the Only Weak Point Grangers to the Front In the Afternoon Industrials Strong and Quiet All Day Bonds Unchanged. Nkw Yoiik, Jan. 27. The stock market again showed considerable strength In spots. An Increased volnmo of business was trans acted, but the final changes are, with but few exceptions, of no special significance, and prices are about where they were last night. That there still "exists a large de mand for stocks is without doubt, and while the real traders are fighting the improve ment stocks are passing into strong hands. ASthe supply of stocks diminishes the In stitutions and individuals who are large lenders of money are the most active buyers of ecurities. The story that two large insurance com panies have been large buyers of Lacka wanna obtained much credence on the street to-day, nnd the demand from smaller in vestors was again sufficient to cause a rise in the stock, butrit was afterward offered heavily by a prominent tradpr, and the re sultant decline was accompanied by rumors of a settlement with tho shorts. Manhattan continued its upward movement, taiily rivaling Lackawanna in the forenoon, and was followed later by Western Union. Tho weak point in tho list was Louisville and Nashville, which reflected the earlv selling for foreign account, and it' was the only stock which finally showed a material loss for the day. Reading was again heavily traded in, and followed Lackawanna at a distance both up and down, and, like the latter, closed unchanged from last night. In the afternoon new buying of a pro nounced character appeared in the Grangers and Burlington took the lead in the upward movement for a time, and It retained the greater part of the gain at the close. The buying was largely for Boston houses. Among the low-priced shares Louisville, New Albany and Chicago was again very conspicuous for its activity and strength, but it stood alone in this respect, the others being qniet and traded in within the nar rowest limits. The Industrials were strong but quiet throughout. A decline or 2Ji pet cent in Richmond and West Point preferred attracted attention, but a portion of it was regained and the stock, while lower, showed only a fractional loss. The market opened with heavy pressure from the foreigners, and prices were all lower, Louisville and Nashville being "down per cent, but the demand developed in the leading shares brought the general list up without causing any marked movements outside of the few stocksmentioned, and this strength, with nnfrequent fluctuations in temper, lasted until well in the afternopn, when the early gains were generally wiped completely out. Realizing was liberal, out tncre were tne saiuu iiiaxguiiiuaui. uuuiua tions throughout the list. The market finally closed active and firm on a rally which brought Lackawanna np 1 per cent after.it Jia.d sold, at 145. The final gains of note comprise only Manhattan, Louisville, New Albany and Chicago, 1; Burlington, 1 per cent. Louisville and Nash ville lost IK- The total sales of stocks to-day were 441, 917 shares, Including: Atchison, 9.S20; Chi cago Gas, 16.075; Delaware. Lackawanna and Western, 84,080: Erie, 11,210; Louisville and Naibville, 24,041; Manhattan, 9,100: Missouri Pacific, 6,000; Northwestern, 8,250; Northern Pacific preferred, 6,625: Pacific Mail, 4,550; St. Paul, 19,900; St. Paul and Omaha, 11,670; Union Pacific, 16,743; Western Union, 16,760. In railroad bonds none of the active issues scored any material change, nnd the fluctua tions were strictly on a parity with those in the share list. The tone was firm through out, however, and most bonds are slightly higher than at the last previous salfes. FANCY CEEAMEEY BUTTER FIRMER Eeceipls of Cereals I-are, and Karlets in Favor of -Bnyers. S0GAES LOWER AND COFFEE STRONG Ofvioe of The Dispatch. Pittsbceo. Wepnssday, January 27. $ Country Pboduce Jobbing Prices The cold weather of the past few days has had the effect ot stiffening prices of eggs. Strictly fresh eggs are now 2c per dozen above prices which prevailed at the begin ning of the week, and prospects are good for still further advances if the cold weather continues. The rise in Elgin creamery but ter which took place at Elgin on Monday is fully justified by events. Supply of fancy stock in this market is light, and demand is active at the advance. Country rolls are in better request, and prices are a shade bet ter. Poultry is in active demand, particu larly dressed chickens, the supply being short of late. There is a better inquiry for potatoes and onions, but prices fail to ad vance. Other vegetables and fruits ot all kinds are quiet.- Affles II 501 75 per narrei.
