Will Be the Title of the First Lecture
in Eeply to Dr. Brings.
DB. BDKRELL TO START THE BALL
With an Address In Eehalf of Orthodoxy,
This Evening.
INTERESTING COMPARISONS AHEAD
fFrECIAL TELBGItAM TO THE DISrJlTCTt.l
XEW 1'oek, Jan. 16. The course of Sun
day evening lectures at the Church of the
Covenant, where Br. Briggs has been ex
pounding his views, and where the belief in
the Bible's inerrancy has been bo vigorously
assailed by several of the speakers, has
been viewed with a great deal of alarm by
that section of the Presbyterian Church
that still holds to the old orthodox views.
Rev. D. J. Bnrrell, pastor of the Marble
Collegiate Church, has arranged for a series
of lectures on the same general plan as
those in the Church of the Covenant and
the Church of the Puritans.
The general topic is "The Bible Under
Fire," and the whole course has been laid
out for the avowed purpose of demolishing
tbe arguments of Dr. Briggs and his
friends. .
Tlio FIrmt Lecture To-Night
The first lecture is to be delivered to
morrow evening, on "The Inerrant Bible"
by Dr. Burrell himself. Xext Sunday even
ing Dr. "William Henry Green, Professor
of Biblical liierature, in Princeton, will
speak on "Tbe Anti-Biblical Higher Criti
cism." This lecture, by a prolessor from
the very stronghold of Presbyterian ortho
doxy, will be of special interest.
It will be interesting to see how the
audiences attending these lectures compare
with those that have been filling the Church
of the Conventant for several Sundays. The
lectures of Dr. Briggs and of the leaders in
the Liberal school are practically under the
direction of the Union Theolocical Semin
ary, for Dr. Mcllvaine, the church's pastor,
is one of Union's directors, and many of the
speakers are trom its faculty. They have
been watched, accordingly, with a jealous
eye, by the Presbyterians of the "West, who
haTe declared their opposition to the liber
alism of Union, and thus of Prot Briggs.
Detroit to lJe Keprated at Portland.
Dr. Joseph G. Jlonfort, of Cincinnati,
said recently regarding these lectures:
TTo believe the influence or the action of
the Xew York Presbytery and the current
lectures will Increase the number of Ills
(Dr. Uriels') frienas on Manhattan Inland;
lint if Paris isFrance New York is not the
United States, nor is the New York Fresbv-
lery the 1'resDyterian Churcu. The Church
gnoke at Detroit and will speak again at
Portland. I' Dr. Brings will only print his
lectures it will be a jrreat advantage to ttan
Church, i l:o plainer the cae Is made the
better. "When the end come It will be found
that New York City willbe the chief suffeier
lu the explosion and the exodus. Her min
isters and her people will bo in a state of
solution, and m order to cystjilllzation, ac
cording to their elective affinities, every
church will have an experience of refiner's
Are and fuller' soap.
The course of.lcctures now in progress In
Xew York will doubtless do some harm in
other sections of tnechutcli. Its effect upon
the students of Union Rill be damaging.
Yoanc men, under such a pressure, are
tempted to cut loose from parents, pastors
and presbyteries, and when they get tnroupli
and return home, duties difficult and deli
cate will require the attention of sessions
an d pi esby teries.
Apain, the few ministers in the various
presbyteries who are defenders of the new
views and of the men ho hold them, may
wax bolder, in view of current utterances in
New York, and cive trouble to presByteries
and congregations; but the gain in the whole
church, when compared with the loss, will
be as ten to one.
I j man Abbott's r.eeture a Corker.
The lecture of Dr. Lyman Abbott in the
course especially disturbed a large number
in the church, and this is what the Xew
York correspondent of the Herald and Pra
lytcr had to say about it last week:
I bear that the lectures delivered in the
Thurch of the Convent are to be published.
Iiut it is safe to say that Dr. Lvman Abbott's
will not be amonc them. It is simplv scan
dalous that such a lecture as his, delivered
there two weeks ago, should bo listened to
in a Presbyterian Church, in the presence of
the pastorand a number of the New York"
cleiv. It was, to say the least, a gross
breach of good taste, that he shouldattack
tne cardinal doctrines of Presbyteriau
iMii from a Presbyterian pulpit. So of
fensive were some of his utterances that
n number of people left the church, where
tip n the lecturer kindly informed tho audi
e .ce that he had no intention of shocking
anybody, but he did not regard the Bible as
infallible, even as a rule of faith and prac
tice. His criticism of the decalogue as a
code of morals seemed to gratify his audi
ence, particularly his remark that a man
Jnicht keep the whole law, and yet be unfit
for decent society in the nineteenth cen
tury. The successor orHenry trardBeecher
is likely to be an excellent snbstitute lor
Moses. Dr. Abbott's contemptuous refer
ence to the vicarious atonement of our Lord
was equally noticeable. Many of those
present seemed charmed with his original
description of it, as the idea of one God suf
fering in order to propitiate another God, or
v.ordsto that ellect. Other jests of the lec
turer caused no more th.in a smile, but those
ho had found Prof. Briggs a trifle dull felt
t nat they had bad a delightful evening.

Washington, D. C., Jan. IB. While
Dr. Hamlin, the pastor of the Church of the
Covenant, was engaged in his study in the
church this afternoon he noticed a smell of
smoke coming apparently from the direc
tion of the basement of the chapel immedi
ately adjoining the church in the rear. He
found a fire had broken out in the base
ment, A general fire alarm was turned in.
The flames had started in a room in which,
is located a gas engine. They spread very
rapidly, and it was not long before they had
worked their way up to the second floor and
ignited the woodwork in the large Sunday
school room. Thence the fire progressed
upward, and soon the ceiling and
roof of the chapel were burning, but
after an hour's vigorous work the fire
was got tinder control. Although the en
tire interior of the chapel is gutted, it is be
lieved the damage will not exceed $10,000.
The auditorum of the church suffered little
or no damage except from smoke. Dr.
Hamlin's valuable library was saved.
The Church of the Covenant is situated in
the most aristocratic part of the city, and
mnnvof the high Government officials and
prominent residents of Washington attend
services there. The President and Mrs.
Harrison also have made it their church
home.
It was not very long before the fact that
the church was on fire was generally
known, and the streets and doorsteps in the
vicinitv were crowded with people. These
included the President and Vice President,
who witnessed the progress of the fire
from a position of advantage near the burn
ing church. This is the second time in
three 'years that the Church, of the Co ve-
