AFTER GKEENAWALT.
Suspicion Aroused by Returning
More Money Than Usual.
ALLEGHENY AUDITORS' NEXT MOVE
They TTill Investigate the Books of the
Bark Measurer.
TO BATTLE WITH APPROPEIATIONS
The Allegheny Auditing Committe's
next moves will he to investigate the ac
counts of the bark measurer and to see
whether the electric companies in the city
have been mating correct returns of the
number of poles they use. The present
bark measurer is "William Greenawalt He
is appointed by City Councils and measures
all bark that is received by the tanneries in
the dity. The money turned in usually
amounts to from $1,600 to 51,800 a year.
During the last eight months, however, it
has reached about 52,600. The accounts of
Mr. Greenawalt will be carefully examined
by the auditors and an attempt made to find
out why there has been such an increase in
receipts in the last few months.
Revenue Increased by the Audit.
A member o"f the Auditing Committee
stated yesterday it would seem the present
audit had stirred up all the city officials.
Receipts from nearly all departments, he
said, had been increased and have been paid
more promptly than before. It had not
been intended to audit the bark measurer's
books, but on account of the sudden increase
of money turned in it was concluded to
do so.
The tax on poles has not in the past
amounted to very much. One dollar is
charged for each pole in the citv, but the
telecraph, telephone and electric light com
panies have always returned a ridiculously
small number as being all the poles they
have. The auditors expect to make a
thorough investigation, and in case there is
no other method to learn the truth, they
will themselves go through the city and
count the poles. The fight with the street
railways is still going merrily on. "When
telephone, telegraph and electric light com
panies are also put on the defense there
will be only the gas companies left out.
Reformers Out for Estimates,
The reform members of Councils are pre
paring lor a lively war when the appropri
ation ordinances come up for approval.
The reformers have always looked with sur
picion on the members of Finance Commit
tee, and they think that the appropriations
aked for are too large. It is believed
Finance Committee will recommend the
granting of almost everything asked ior,
but will probably run up against as bitter
resistance as they did a year ago when
seven members of Select Council with writ
ten memoranda of everything they wanted
to do carried every point they raised. Mr.
Ilenricks engineered the movement, and
will probably be given the same honor this
year.
In the investigation of Chief Murphy by
the Common Council Committee appointed
for that purpose, Chairman Lewis is doing
the principal part "of the work. An effort
is being made now to ascertain what wit
nesses, who claim they have evidence, will
appear when called upon.

WANTS THE B. & 0. B0AD BUILT.
Major Workman Urelnjr the Completion of
the Line From Zediker to Coal Center.
Major "William "Workman, of "Washing
ton, was in the city yesterday attending the
annual meeting of one of the Baltimore and
Ohio branches. He is one of the wealth
iest men in "Washington county, and has
done more to develop the railroads in that
section than any other man living there.
The Major is interested in the O. &
B. short line, and he is urging the
Baltimore and Ohio people to complete the
road. The line was projected to run from
Zediker, a station on the "Wheeling divi
sion, about five miles from "Washington, to
the coke regions. Abont 51,500,000 were
spent on it in grading, etc., when the
Baltimore and Ohio built the branch from
Glenwood to Findleyvilie and made a
through line to "Wheeling. The O. & B.
was then abandoned.
The Major says that the road can be
built from Zediker to Coal Center, on the
Monongahela river, at no great expense, as
most ot the grading has been done. The
original line, if it had been constructed,
lrouldhave been only 57 miles long be
tween Connellsville aud "Wheeling. All
the coke shipments going west over the
Baltimore and Ohio that now pass through
Pittsburg would have been taken over the
O. & B. The Major thinks the road will
yet be finished.
FLIHH'S BEICKYABDS BTJBNED.
The
Famous Street l'nvlnff Firm
Loses
813,000 by Fire.
The large brick manufacturing plant of
Booth & Flinn, at Forbes and Jumonville
streets, was partially destroyed by fire
yesterday. It ia as the largest brick works
in the city, and the damage done will reach
f 12,000, not to mention the loss that will be
entailed by two months idleness while the
plant is being rebuilt The fire loss is cov
ered by insurance.
The origin of the fire is 'not known as it
broke out while the employes were at din
ner and none were about the portion of the
building where it started. The boiler room,
machine shop, containing the brick making
machinery, and the drying kilns were en
tirely destroyed. All were frame buildings
and the loss will result principally from
the machinery. The supposition is that
natural gas caused the fire, as a gas flame at
one corner of the builning gave the firemen
considerable trouble before it was shut off
The Duquesne Traction patrons were in
convenienced during the three hours'prosress
of the fire, but a transfer was arrangedthat
enabled passengers to reach their destina
tions. GOOD servants and help will answer your
advertisements in THE DISPATCH cent-a-word
columns.
TEIED TO SAVE HIS MASTEB.
A raithrul Dog's Attempts to Attract At
tention to a Fatal Accident.
SCRANTON. Pa., Jan. 1L 5pftii
Charles Dome, an employe at Boland's
livery, dropped 40 feet down an elevator
this afternoon and sustained fatal injuries.
Assistance was directed to the mangled
body of Dorne at the bottom of the shaft
by his dog, which ran whining about the
great stable trying to attract the attention
of the employes. First the dog would rush
up to one of the men, then it would start
toward the elevator shaft, whining pit
eously. After the dog had' howled about for tully
half an hour, one of the men followed it to
the shalt and saw the body of Dome at the
bottom. There were indications that the
iaithful animal had tried to drag its master
from the pit, teeth marks being found on
his arm, and the lapel of his coat and the
bosom of his shirt having been torn to
shreds.
